Some Walmart patrons in Kalispell, Montana, received a special surprise this week when an anonymous "Secret Santa" purchased layaway items for unsuspecting customers.Walmart Store Manager Phillip Colby says the man purchased more than ,000 in layaway accounts for families in need.Colby says this is an annual tradition for the anonymous gift giver who wishes to keep his identity a secret.“He very much wished to stay anonymous, he made that known at the very beginning, he didn’t want to make a big deal, he just wanted to lend what help he could to those in need,” said Colby.Colby adds, the anonymous gift giver is not a native of Kalispell, but just wishes to help out the community as much as he can. 720

Scientists at the Department of Defense are working on giving families of troops who were killed in action some closure. For Brent Stevenson, advances in technology allowed him to honor his uncle.Stevenson ‘s uncle William Bruesewitz died in the attack at Pearl Harbor attack at the age of 26.This month, his family finally laid him to rest 77 years after he died.“Everybody is overjoyed and thrilled that we’re able to do this and very much humbled and honor that we’re able to do it at Arlington National Cemetery,” said Stevenson.Bruesewitz served in the Navy and died during an attack on his battleship, the USS Oklahoma. His remains were recovered, but could not be identified. For decades, he was buried as an unknown soldier. But advances in technology allowed the military to re-examine his remains and finally make a positive identification.“It was surprising. It was a blessing. It was really quite humbling,” said Stevenson.“Every year it is our goal to identify at least 200 of these service members. But we would like to get that number higher if we can find ways to do it,” said Dr. John Byrd, the chief scientist from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.Over the years, Byrd and his team have found new ways to use advanced DNA techniques to identify remains and they continue to make progress.“They have developed over and over again improved extraction protocols that allow them to get DNA out of bones where yesterday they couldn’t,” said Byrd. But Byrd admits the race against time, not technology, can be the biggest obstacle as older generations pass away.“It’s one of the greatest challenges of all and this is how do you find close or closet family members of missing service man from 1944,” said Byrd.Despite the challenges, the mission moves forward to give a name and dignity to thousands of fallen soldiers.“All of this work, ultimately, is being done so that this service member can have his name back and his family will know what happened to him,” said Byrd.“It’s going to bring a lot of comfort to a lot of families just like it has ours,” said Stevenson. 2097

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – A United Parcel Service (UPS) worker was planning a mass shooting at the facility he worked at in California, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. The department says it learned of the threat Sunday after receiving a report that 32-year-old Thomas Andrews had sent text messages to his employer, threatening the shooting. Officers began investigating and discovered Andrews was the registered owner of four handguns and rifle. Law enforcement then began an extensive search for him. At about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, the department says officers spotted Andrews and attempted to stop him, but he led them in a vehicle pursuit on a nearby highway. Eventually, he was taken into custody.Detectives obtained a search warrant for Andrews’ home, where officers say they located more than 20,000 rounds of handgun and rifle ammunition, numerous high capacity magazines, five tactical style rifles, one shotgun, three handguns and body armor. “Several tactical backpacks containing ammunition were staged at the front door of the apartment where the suspect resides,” wrote the department 1127

Shawn Juhl returned to what was his small business in North Bend, Nebraska this week, after the city was impacted by floods. "It's rough, yeah,” he says. “You know; the emotions are up and down." Emotions are running high through several Midwest states today, as people realize the devastation high flood waters caused.Thousands of acres of farmland saturated for days, combined with the potential animal losses, may put some farmers out of a livelihood. Farm animals weren’t the only animals affected by the storm. In Freeport, Illinois, firefighters used front-end loaders to rescue 14 dogs and eight cats, all for homeowners who had to no way into their neighborhoods. "My wife was at work, and I came back into town, and at that point I realized I couldn't get across the bridge, get into my home," says Freeport resident Shawn Starry. At Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, the rising flood waters have brought yet another concern. Col. Dave Norton says the water line was almost to the top of the windows at the headquarters of their security forces teams on-base. About a third of the base, which has 80 structures, has been under flood water since Saturday. "Places we would have meetings in routinely now have literally feet of water in them,” says Col. Norton. When an oily sheen began showing up on the surface of the flood water this week, officials feared a fuel tank may have ruptured. That doesn't appear to have happened, but as a precaution they've brought in teams to place yellow plastic tubing around the area to contain the substance. They hope waters recede by the weekend, so clean-up efforts can begin.“This recovery effort will not be quick,” Col. Norton says. 1694
