(KGTV) - A North County man is being charged in the attempted murder of his brother, San Diego County Sheriff's Department announced.SDSO deputies said 19-year-old Juan Sixto was brought to the hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound on Feb. 18. just before 9:30 p.m.During their investigation, deputies said they determined the shooting likely took place at Sixto's apartment on Pomelo Drive in Vista. There, deputies detained Sixto's brother, 27-year-old Fredy Sixto. WARNING: Some information in this article is disturbing.LEBANON COUNTY, Penn. – A Pennsylvania father and his fiancée have been charged with the killing of the man’s 12-year-old son, whose body was found in horrific conditions earlier this year.The Lebanon County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release Monday that police found the body of Max Schollenberger on May 26, completely naked and sprawled across a bed on the second floor of his family's home in Lebanon County.The DA says Max’s body appeared malnourished, and the boy and the bed he was on were completely covered in fecal matter. Detectives reported claw marks in the sheets and said the marks made indentations on the stained feces.Max’s bedroom was entirely devoid of light and furniture, aside from the bed where he died, according to the DA. Shades were reportedly taped to the room’s windows and doors were screwed shut over them, so the child couldn’t see out.The DA says the door to the room had three metal hooks, which Max’s father, Scott Schollenberger, and his fiancée, Kimberly Maurer, admitted to using to lock the boy inside.During an investigation of Max’s life and ultimate death, detectives learned Kimberly had acted as the victim’s mother for the past decade and that she had other biological children with Scott. The DA says those kids lived in the same house, but they were “healthy, well-adjusted and cared for.”When the other children were interviewed, they reportedly described the stench that emanated from Max’s room and how their parents refused to let the boy out.“One child specifically remembered the defendants would enter the victim’s room and Max Schollenberger would scream and cry,” the DA said. “The child also recalled the defendants discussed bruises on the victim’s body.”The DA says family members and acquaintances reported they had not seen Max in quite some time, and certain people connected to the family were entirely unaware of the boy’s existence.At 12 years old, the DA says Max was never registered for or attended school, and he also hadn't received any medical care since was 2 years old.A forensic autopsy led to multiple findings compatible with starvation and malnutrition and multiple blunt force traumas throughout the child’s head, face, and body, according to the DA. Specifically, a doctor found Max weighed just 47.5 pounds at his death and was only 4 feet 1 inches tall.“He was nowhere near the size, weight, or stature appropriate for a child of his age,” said the DA. “All four of the child’s limbs showed a severe lack of muscle mass; his bones themselves showed a weakened state.”The doctor concluded that Max died as a result of blunt force head trauma complicating starvation/malnutrition, and his death was ruled a homicide.Scott and Kimberly are accused of starving, neglecting, abusing, and ultimately killing Max. They’ve been charged with criminal homicide, conspiracy to commit criminal homicide, endangering the welfare of a child, and conspiracy to commit endangering the welfare of a child.“Today marks the first step in the long path of justice for this little boy. Max Schollenberger existed – I will not call this living – in a state of perpetual suffering; he existed in the most egregious and foul of conditions. He remained starved, locked away, and isolated until his killing. This child never looked forward to his first day of school, blew out candles on a birthday cake, or experienced the unconditional love of family. WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump and Homeland Security chief Kirstjen Nielsen never quite clicked personally as the president chafed at her explanations of complicated immigration issues and her inability to bring about massive changes at the U.S.-Mexico border.With Nielsen's departure now considered inevitable, her eventual replacement will find there's no getting around the immigration laws and court challenges that have thwarted the president's hard-line agenda at every turn — even if there's better personal chemistry.The list of potential replacements for Nielsen includes a career lawman, two military officers and former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement head Thomas Homan — a tough-talker who echoes Trump's border rhetoric."A good DHS person ought to be able to scare America" about heroin coming over the border and illegal crossings, former Trump campaign adviser Barry Bennett said. "But, the system is so against you legally and structurally."Trump soured on Nielsen in part over frustrations that she has not been able to do more to address what he has called a "crisis" at the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump has seized on statistics about illegal border crossings that have grown on her watch after reaching a record low early in his term. WASHINGTON (AP) — More police officers have died in the line of duty this year in the United States than in 2017, according to data released Thursday. Most were killed by gunfire, and vehicular accidents claimed nearly as many officers' lives.The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said in a report that 144 federal, state and local officers have died so far in 2018. That figure represents roughly a 12 percent increase from the 129 who died in 2017.The majority of the officers who died were either shot — 52 this year, up from 46 in 2017 — or fatally injured in car or motorcycle crashes, which accounted for 50 deaths. Other fatalities involved heart attacks, strokes, drownings and cancer and other illnesses among those who responded to the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.Of the officers who were shot, eight were killed during investigative activity and six were killed while responding to calls of a domestic or public disturbance, according to the report. Two were shot while serving warrants, two died while handling or transporting prisoners and two others were inadvertently shot by other officers.Craig Floyd, the fund's chief executive officer, called the increase in deaths disappointing after a decline in 2017."Sadly this reminds us that public safety is a dangerous job and can come at a very steep price," Floyd said in a statement. "We must never take the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers for granted, and we must remember the families of the fallen who are left behind."Of the officers who died in traffic-related incidents, 32 were killed in crashes involving another vehicle and 14 were struck while outside their vehicle. An additional four were killed in a motorcycle accident.The officers who died in 2018 include a sheriff's deputy in Sacramento County, California, killed in a shootout at an auto parts store; a Greensboro, North Carolina, police officer killed in a car crash while responding to a call for a robbery; and a Greene County, Missouri, sheriff's deputy who drowned when his car was swept away by water.The states that experienced the highest number of officer fatalities were Texas, California, Florida and New York, where eight died. 2214
