SAN DIEGO (CNS) - National University announced Wednesday its Board of Trustees approved a plan to reduce the cost of attendance through tuition cuts of up to 25% for full-time students and adding scholarships that will make enrollment nearly free for Pell Grant eligible students.The actions -- made possible through a 2019 gift to the La Jolla university's reserve fund by philanthropist T. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A tall, thin woman in a black hooded sweatshirt robbed a Normal Heights bank today.The thief, who appeared to be in her mid-20s, approached a service counter at the US Bank branch office in the 3500 block of El Cajon Boulevard and handed a teller a demand note shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.After the employee gave her an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber walked out of the bank and fled in an unknown direction, Officer Tony Martinez said. 498

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight more flu deaths were reported last week in the San Diego region, the county Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday.There were 264 lab-confirmed cases in total, a slight increase over the 257 cases reported the week of March 25. Emergency room visits by people with flu-like symptoms dropped from 3 percent to 2 percent over the same span, however.Overall, there have been 334 influenza-related deaths in San Diego County this season, compared to 82 during the same period last flu season.Victims have ranged in age from 1 to 101, and most had underlying medical conditions."Unfortunately, influenza-related deaths are still being reported, a sign that the flu continues to take a toll on the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer . "While influenza activitypersists, people should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick, especially getting vaccinated."The high number of deaths this season is related to unusually severe strains of the virus but also improved tracking by local medical communities, according to the county. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - After hours of public input and deliberation, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a .5 billion operating budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year.Previously .4 billion, the revised budget reflects an additional .2 million in recent funding requests, including million for rental assistance, millions of dollars in road projects and an office dedicated to racial equality.Tuesday's vote, held via teleconference, follows two public hearings earlier in August, when board members heard funding requests from residents.Normally held in late June, the budget approval process was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Supervisors thanked Chief Administrative Officer Helen-Robbins Meyer and her staff for crafting a budget during an especially challenging time.``Putting together a budget is a big job,'' said board Chairman Greg Cox.According to a summary provided by Robbins-Meyer's office, the county is spending .5 billion on health & human services, billion for public safety, 6 million on finance and general government, 2 million on land use and environment, 9 million on various items and 5 million on capital improvements.``I think we can be proud that we have a good, solid and well-balanced budget,'' Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.Supervisor Jim Desmond credited staff members for ``for fighting to do the right thing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A United Airlines flight scheduled to take off from San Diego International Airport was diverted from the runway just before departure Friday due to an undisclosed mechanical issue with one of the plane's engines.Flight 478 was scheduled to take off for Denver shortly before noon, but was recalled while on the airport's taxiway. The plane was safely escorted back to the airport's terminal and the issue occurred at low speed, according to United.``The aircraft safely returned to the gate and customers deplaned normally,'' a United spokesperson said in a statement. ``We are making arrangements to get our customers to their final destination as soon as possible.''Roughly 120 passengers were aboard the flight.
