BEIJING, Nov.18 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Tajikistan next week will deepen friendly cooperation between China and Tajikistan, said Cheng Guoping, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister, Thursday."Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations in 1992, bilateral relations have witnessed steady and sound development with extensive high level exchanges and increasing political mutual trust," said Cheng at a press conference.He said because of the joint efforts by the two sides, cooperation in trade, transportation, communications, electricity and infrastructure had been expanding and fruitful.Total bilateral trade volume in the first 10 months this year reached 1.08 billion U.S. dollars, a 2.5-percent rise from the same period last year, Cheng said.The two countries had also supported each other in major issues of mutual concern and maintained close coordination within multilateral institutions like the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), effectively guarding their own interests and making positive contributions to the world peace and development, he said.During the visit, the leaders of the two countries would exchange ideas about bilateral cooperation as well as international and regional affairs.Wen would also attend ninth SCO prime ministers' meeting in Tajikistan's capital of Dushanbe on Nov. 25, said Cheng.He said the SCO member nations were expected to find common ground in promoting regional cooperation, facilitating investment, and enhancing the organization's internal construction.Sun Yongfu, director general of department of European affairs at Ministry of Commerce, who also attended the press conference, said economic cooperation among SCO members had been fruitful due to their close trade links.He said in the first 10 months this year the total trade volume between China and the other SCO states reached 67.9 billion U.S. dollars, up 37.4 percent year on year.Sun said the close cooperation among SCO member nations had made positive contributions to returning the world economy back to growth.

BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's welfare lottery has raised over seven billion yuan (about 1 billion U.S. dollar) for the country' s quake-stricken area in its southwest since 2008.The preliminary count was announced by China's Welfare Lottery Distribution and Management Center on Monday, a few weeks before the deadline for the fund-raising project.The project was initiated shortly after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated China's southwestern region in May 2008, which left more than 87,000 people dead or missing.Designed to last for a 30-month period starting on July 1, 2008, the special fund-raising project will conclude on the last day of this month.This was the second major fund-raising effort dedicated for relief work following natural disasters.The first one was initiated after disastrous floods along the Yangtze, China' s longest river, in 1998. About 1.5 billion yuan was raised then.China's welfare lottery started in 1987.

BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) has announced that it would publicize the affairs of grassroots Party organizations by the end of 2011, a further step in its effort to push forward intra-party democracy.The decision was made public on Tuesday by He Guoqiang, secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, during a national meeting in Beijing where he laid out a five-point plan on the publication of affairs of grassroots Party organizations.He said Party organizations at all levels should fully understand and implement a guiding document that was issued by the General Office of the CPC Central Committee in September.The document called openness in Party affairs the life of the Party and an essential part of the intra-Party democracy, and defined openness in Party affairs as "publication of content, procedures, results and other aspects of Party affairs within a certain scope."Publishing affairs of grassroots Party organizations was an important measure to expand democracy within the Party at the grassroots level, safeguard the democratic rights of Party members, strengthening intra-Party supervision, and regulating the use of power, the document said.He urged Party organizations at all levels to meticulously draw up implementation schemes to ensure that the policy of openness in Party affairs would begin in grassroots Party organizations, including those in enterprises, rural areas, government institutions and schools.He said grassroots Party organizations should willingly publicize its affairs, such as its resolutions, the implementation of these resolutions, and official appointments, in a timely manner except for those concerning classified information of the Party and the state.

BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- China reiterated its commitment to support Sudan's peace process, stressing that peace, stability and development of the country were of pivotal importance."The involved parties should resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation and work together to promote a smooth referendum in southern Sudan," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry here Wednesday.Yang's remarks came during the talks with his visiting Sudanese counterpart Ahmed Ali Karti. BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for strengthening efforts in ecological and environmental protection as the country strives for economic restructuring and improving people's livelihoods.Li made the remarks Monday at a meeting on the application of research results on China's environment. According to Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian, during another meeting on Tuesday, the sulfur dioxide index is expected to drop 14 percent in 2010 compared with the 2005 level.Also, the index of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, is expected to decrease 12 percent.China's 11th five-year program set out to reduce COD and sulfur dioxide levels by 10 percent over this period.However, Li stressed that China faced more pressure in environmental protection than any country in the world, since it was a developing nation striving for modernization and with a huge population of 1.3 billion.China should innovate its development mode and endeavor to make the two, development and environmental protection, promote each other, he noted.Li said the country should set up a people-oriented conception in environmental protection efforts, and carry out major projects regarding sewage disposal, waste processing and water environment in urban areas.Efforts would also be devoted to prevent and treat rural area's pollution problems and ensure the safety of drinking water and food, Li said.Li called for improving related laws and regulations and fully completing the government's responsibility in the environmental protection sector.
