The Instagram account "@asu_covid.parties" gained more than 900 followers in less than three months, but not for a good reason, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday by the Arizona Board of Regents.The suit, going after whoever is behind the mysterious social media account, accusing them of false advertising, trademark infringement, and unfair competition."...to promote a so-called "Hoax-19" Covid party, claiming that Covid-19 is "a big fat hoax," and spreading dangerous misinformation about Covid19 just as students are returning to ASU's campuses to begin classes on August 20, 2020," according to the lawsuit.Its posts, considered dangerous by ASU, citing repeated messages to ignore safety precautions, and claiming to be working on planning massive parties."No more social distancing. No more masks. It's time to party!" read one post."We will party. We do not care what you snowflakes say. COVID-19 is a fat hoax," read another.The account, already seen by some students living on campus."It's kind of an embarrassment honestly," said freshman Bella Rusy. "I don't know why anyone would want to do that," added Allan Rodriguez. "Especially with everything going on right now, parties should be the last thing you should do." ASU accuses the account of posting false and offensive statements about ASU, and its leaders."In several posts the owner of this account portrays ASU and its leadership as Nazis, referring to ASU's President Crow as Führer Crow and comparing ASU's mask requirement to forcing Jews to wear a yellow Star of David."The suit goes on to say ASU leaders have been pleading with Facebook, the company who runs Instagram, to remove the account, but have been unsuccessful."Despite actual knowledge of the infringement, and the ability to control and monitor the "asu_covid.parties" account on its platform – and contrary to its own terms, policies and community guidelines – Facebook continues to provide its Instagram service to "asu_covid.parties," which in turn provides the means of infringement.""Further worsening this situation, the initial investigation indicates that the parties behind this account may be located in Russia and are using the account to sow confusion and conflict and to interfere with the health of the Arizona State University community by trying to worsen the pandemic here."Living on campus, students like Justin Gutfeld believes most students hope to keep from spreading the virus among the ASU community, after seeing universities across the country reverse in-person learning after only days of students returning to campus."The last thing we want to do is spend all this effort like moving in to just move out again," he said. "That's just a very easy way to like ruin it for a whole lot of people who like worked hard to come here."Friday night, the account was seemingly removed from Instagram. Facebook telling the Arizona Republic the account violated their policies but adds they disagree the account violated any trademark rights ASU might have.In a statement, ASU President Michael Crow said, "We simply cannot and will not allow the institution and its trademarks to be used for the manipulative and inappropriate purposes of those who cowardly hide behind social media collaborators like Instagram." 3279

Awbreyk says about 91 million tons of goods on average come through the area per year.“The equivalent of 25,000 semi-trucks worth of cargo passes through this site every year,” says Awbreyk. “You can imagine the wear and tear on the interstates and the highways that would have an extra 25,000 vehicles that will be on there per day."The project's price tag has grown to around billion. Workers here say it's money Americans will see come back to them."It’s widely important. The Miami Police Department says what began as disagreement about masks led to an assault on Sunday evening.According to a statement from the Miami Police Department, the incident began at Latin Cafe, a ventanita or coffee shop near Miami International Airport. It's unclear how many of those people could face charges.Miami currently requires the use of masks in public to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The neon lights of Broadway’s Honky Tonk bars are still shining brightly each night in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. But across this city that's soul heavily beats to the pulse of local musicians’ songs, many independent music venues are in danger of going dark for good.Since 1971, Exit/In near the city’s west end neighborhood has long been a beacon for smaller artists looking to make it big. Over the years, everyone from Billy Joel to Cheryl Crow to Jimmy Buffet has graced the stage here. But it’s the smaller, less well-known artists who truly rely on a black box venue like this one.“It’s a purist’s room. It’s just a great old school style place,” explained owner Chris Cobb.Since March though, Exit/In and thousands of other venues like it across the country have been shut down--forced to close their doors because of the coronavirus.“It’s just not safe. It’s not safe to do what we do right now, unfortunately, and there’s no pivot option. We can’t curbside a concert, we can’t to-go a concert,” Cobb lamented.It’s that kind of daunting reality facing owners of clubs, venues and smaller music halls across the country. Many have already run out of money and most are out of time. Aside from the 57 employees that Cobb had to lay off, there are also closed signs now popping up on businesses around the neighborhood who rely on live shows to bring customers in.“We’re on the edge of a cliff with a huge number of venues right there at the edge and about to go over, and they won’t come back,” he added.While it’s not a giant stadium, venues like Exit/In are the kind of spaces where smaller artists get their start. In cities across the country, independent venues are deeply engrained in the culture of the communities they operate in.For musician Daniel Donato, not having a stage like Exit/In to play on has been difficult.“I want to create memories that people can go back to. I want to be somebody’s Friday night. And the first thing a musician plays is the venue, they don’t play their instrument, they play the venue they’re in,” Donato said.In addition to the income he’s lost, the 25-year-old musician is also missing out on a chance to refine his craft. There are countless musicians like him across the country stuck in a kind of painful limbo.“I have to have the energy of the people in the room, take that, put it in a guitar and make it something great,” he added.By the end of the year, live performance venues are expected to lose about billion on ticket sales alone. Because of the impending crisis facing smaller venues, nearly 2,800 have banded together to form the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA).A stunning 90 percent of venues in the organization say they will close by the end of the year without any federal assistance.“It’s happening and every day that goes by is a risk that it happens more, people have run out of money,” explained Audrey Fix Schaefer, who serves as the director of communication for the group.In recent months, NIVA has created the "Save Our Stages Act." It’s a billion grant program for independent venues with bi-partisan support. Now, all they need is a vote in Congress.“People have run out of money and they’re running out of hope,” she added.As for Cobb, it's not just about the jobs that have been lost, it's about the music that the country may never hear if independent venues go silent forever.“It’s hard to think about American music without this network of independent music venues that have existed in this country for decades now. American music, as we know it, would not exist. I’m afraid that’s what we’re about to learn the hard way is it can’t exist the way we know it if these venues go away,” Cobb said.But for now, that's a song Cobb is trying not to write, hoping that the sun doesn't permanently set on some of the nation's most beloved stages. 3854

  

The Pennsylvania Supreme court has ordered that the names of 11 priests accused of sexual abuse in a grand jury report remain permanently redacted.Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro had requested that the priests' names be made public. The clergymen are among more than 300 "predator priests" accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 child victims. The names of more than 270 priests were made public when the report was released in August. 459
