With various areas of the US under an air quality alert due to recent wildfires, dog owners now have a way to protect to their pets from wildfire smoke.The K-9 Mask, which officially launched in 2019, uses four layers of air filtration to block smoke particles from entering dogs’ lungs. It is shaped like a muzzle to fit over the dog’s mouth and nose.The masks come in four sizes and retail for .99 on its website.In Fall 2018, Evan Daugherty and Kirby Holmes began testing prototypes for the mask amid wildfires in California.After a successful test, Daugherty and Holmes used a crowdfunding campaign to fully fund the project. After 175 donors gave the duo more than ,000, they were able to produce and distribute the K-9 mask starting in 2019.Both the EPA and American Veterinary Medical Association say that smoke from wildfires can be harmful for pets.“Animals with cardiovascular or respiratory disease are especially at risk from smoke and should be closely watched during all periods of poor air quality,” the American Veterinary Medical Association says.The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends pet owners look for the following symptoms amid wildfires and times of poor air quality:Coughing or gaggingDifficulty breathing, including open mouth breathing and increased noise when breathingEye irritation and excessive wateringInflammation of throat or mouthNasal dischargeAsthma-like symptomsIncreased breathing rateFatigue or weaknessDisorientation or stumblingReduced appetite and/or thirst 1530

My commute has been reduced to about 30 seconds," Pernell chuckled.Other examples of this are getting to spend time with your kids or having lunch every day with a significant other, things that would not have been possible without current restrictions.Dr. Pernell also said to give yourself a break and recognize when others need it too."We all get to this place of a little irritation or a little 'I've had enough.' Allow that, recognize it, acknowledge it and don't try and make it better," he said.Keeping with the trend of thinking positively, Dr. Pernell said he sees this as a time to really hone the skills we are gaining. He said given what we are all going through, we will be more resilient and courageous, things he said will serve us well going forward."Every day we are filled with uncertainty," Dr. Pernell said. "Every day we wake up and we don't know what today might hold... if there are new impositions on us or new rules."Of course, number one, Dr. Pernell said to remember that this will end. Workers have a right to safety by law, but an advocacy group claims its new report proves those laws aren't being enforced.The National Employment Law Project (NELP) analyzed data from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) from April to early August and found more than 1,700 workers filed complaints, saying their employers retaliated against them for raising coronavirus safety concerns.NELP tells us they've even heard from workers who asked for masks and were fired. More than half of the complaints were dismissed without investigation, while 2% were investigated and resolved by OSHA.“Instead of an agency that's there to assure that workers have a safe workplace, it's there to assure that you know large employers that want to violate the law that they get off the hook,” said Debbie Berkowitz, Director of the NELP Worker Health and Safety Program.Berkowitz is one of the authors of the report. She worked at OSHA under the Obama administration. She says the agency should've acted with “emergency temporary standards” for safety during the pandemic.“But instead, the administration has done almost no enforcement in this pandemic to protect workers against employers that flagrantly violate the CDC guidelines, because they're just guidelines, they're not mandatory,” said Berkowitz.Berkowitz thinks there would be more complaints if workers felt protected.If you are punished for speaking up, she says you should still file a complaint with OSHA within 30 days. Even if it's dismissed, she's still advocating for people to share their stories.“We need to understand what working people are facing, especially our essential workers who are working outside of the home, and we need to make sure that we're protecting these workers,” said Berkowitz.In a statement to The Washington Post, OSHA said it's committed to these investigations. The agency says the amount of closed complaints related to the coronavirus have been consistent with its normal average. 1993
