BEIJING, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) - A Chinese official vows on Thursday to curb the country's production overcapacity and avoid repetitious construction of projects that are less environmental-friendly.     The move is part of the country's efforts to promote energy conservation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, Wan Bentai, chief engineer with the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), said on half of MEP minister Zhou Shengxian.     "Today's projects should never become the target of tomorrow's environment control program." He said in a speech delivered at the fifth China International Forum on Environment and Development.     The development and industrialization of green economy faces an important opportunity as the country has spent a large share of its 4 trillion yuan (586 billion U.S. dollar) stimulus package on energy conservation and greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects, he said.     He called for strengthened environment assessment measures on enterprises and optimizing the structure of key sectors such as the steel and auto industries.     The environmental problems brought about by China's sweeping urbanization, such as garbage and waste water disposal, should be seriously dealt with, he said, while stressing the importance of addressing issues in the rural areas such as water resources contamination, land pollution, garbage disposal and fertilization-caused pollution.     He also pledged that the government will intensify efforts in fostering creative and highly-efficient green technologies and encourage a green consumption model for both urban and rural dwellers.     A change to people's consumption habits, such as eating less meat, is conducive to environmental protection and greenhouse gas emission reduction, said Khalid Malik, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in China, in the forum.     The fifth China International Forum on Environment and Development was co-hosted by the MEP and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). It was organized by the All-China Environment Federation.     The annual forum has been held for four years with the aim of creating a platform for international organizations and Chinese government agencies to discuss issues related to environmental protection. It also invites the participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in discussing environmental matters of global importance.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Prosecutors have approved the arrest of four employees of the Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. on charges of trade secrets infringement and bribery, according to a statement of China's Supreme People's Procuratorate late Tuesday. Preliminary investigations have showed that the four employees, Stern Hu, Liu Caikui, Ge Minqiang and Wang Yong, had obtained commercial secrets of China's steel and iron industry through improper means, which had violated the country's Criminal Law, according to the statement.     Prosecution authorities also found evidence to prove that they were involved in commercial bribery. The four people, including Hu, had been detained by China's security authorities Sunday evening    Investigations have also revealed that there were suspects in China's steel and iron enterprises who were providing commercial secrets for them.     The four were detained in Shanghai in early July on charges of stealing China's state secrets.          Stern Hu, an Australian citizen of Chinese origin, was general manager of the company's Shanghai office and was in charge of the iron ore business in China.     Hu was a long-standing employee of Rio Tinto and had lived in Shanghai for a number of years with his wife, who is also an Australian citizen.     The other three, who also worked in the Shanghai office, are Chinese employees of the company.

WUHAN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- East Star Airlines, the debt-laden private airline based in central China's Wuhan City, officially went bankrupt after its restructuring application was rejected Thursday.     The Intermediate People's Court in Wuhan City said the plan submitted by the East Star Group and ChinaEquity was unfeasible and failed to meet the conditions for a legal restructuring.     ChinaEquity, an investment company founded in 1999 in Beijing, had promised to invest 200 million to 300 million yuan (29 million to 44 million U.S. dollars) for the restructuring plan.     However, it did not specify the source of the funding and failed to provide certificates and documents, and lacked measures to protect creditors, the court said.     The court said East Star Airlines had no operating income in 2008, while ChinaEquity recorded 470,000 yuan in main business income and a 187,477-yuan deficit last year. NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met with his South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-bak here on Wednesday morning on the sidelines of the UN meetings to discuss bilateral ties and other issues of common interests.     Hu said thanks to their joint efforts the two countries have seen steady progress of exchanges and cooperation in various fields in recent years.     All consensus reached between them have been implemented smoothly, with some already bringing about remarkable results, Hu said.     Hu noted that the two countries have maintained fine communication and coordination in regional and international affairs, adding that China is ready to join hands with South Korea to strengthen strategic communication and expand mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to bring concrete benefits to both peoples and contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in Northeast Asia. They agreed on establishing a strategic partnership of cooperation in May 2008, opening up a new era in bilateral ties. They met again on the sidelines of the financial summit of the Group of 20 (G20) in London in April this year.     China and South Korea are both important neighbors and cooperative partners. Now China is the top trade partner, export market and source of imports of South Korea.     Hu is in New York for the UN climate change summit, the general debate of the 64th Session of the UN General Assembly and a Security Council summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.     After the UN meetings, President Hu will fly to Pittsburgh to attend the G20 financial summit.
