LEXINGTON, Kent. - Wednesday is National Working Parents Day – a time to recognize and appreciate guardians who balance their work and home life.It’s a task that has been especially challenging during the coronavirus pandemic. Since the school year has started back up, many now have to juggle work while overseeing at-home learning.Michelle Martel, a professor and the director of clinical training for the University of Kentucky’s psychology department, says it’s OK for parents to feel overwhelmed and admit they need help at times.“If you have family or close friends in the area that could provide support, that’s a great place to start,” said Martel.Beyond that, if you haven’t already, Martel suggests reaching out to your employer to see how your job can be adjusted to fit into a new work-life balance.“Maybe it involves little different hours. Maybe it involves a little bit more flexibility,” she said. “I think presenting your boss with that idea, you know just, ‘Hey, I was thinking this might make things a little bit easier. Then I can get done what I need to get done, but also manage my kids and it might take the stress off everyone.’ I think most bosses really right now would welcome that.”Martel also says self-care is not selfish and that it’s important for parents to take moments for themselves during this challenging time.“Doing those things and not feeling bad about it, like ‘Oh, there’s a million things you could be doing right now,’ but maybe you just need to go take a hot bath or you need to just go out and take a walk or do something for you. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A suspect was arrested following a robbery at a La Mesa credit union Wednesday morning.According to police, the robbery happened at the Navy Federal Credit Union on the 8700 block of Grossmont Boulevard just after 10 a.m. Wednesday.Police say the suspect brandished a knife and demanded cash after walking into the credit union.After fleeing from the business, the suspect was found driving away from the area by officers responding to the incident.The suspect, Rafeek Karamat, 35, was positively identified using surveillance video from the credit union. Karamat was booked into the San Diego County jail for robbery. 652

In the face of the pandemic, some major chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Gold’s Gym have already filed for bankruptcy. But others are hoping technology and personalized training could help them save brick and mortar gyms.“Last year, I had one knee replaced. I'm scheduled to have the other one this fall,” said 69-year-old Larry Fulhorst. He hadn’t been to a gym in 40 years, but he needed to work on building strength in his legs.A Facebook post led him to a hi-tech fitness studio promising results without needing to spend hours sweating away in a crowded gym.“This sounds too good to be true 20 minutes twice a week," said Fulhorst. The Exercise Coach is a smart fitness studio that trades dumbbells and treadmills for artificial intelligence and robotics. Technology diagnoses strengths and weaknesses in real time.“We use sensors to actually get a feel for the exact muscular makeup and abilities of an individual and then we use that that personal data to generate appropriate strength training,” explained Bryan Cygan, the CEO and founder of The Exercise Coach.The programs are geared primarily toward people who haven’t worked out in years or are starting to exercise for the first time.“Generally, people in their 40, 50s, 60s and even beyond who want real results from a workout but don't want to spend a lot of time exercising,” said Cygan.With many big box gyms filing for bankruptcy as gym goers are weary about coronavirus, smart fitness studios are pivoting in.Compressed workouts, personal trainers and no crowds are key.“It works because our workout isn't an hour long of sweaty cardio. You can actually wear a mask, breathe comfortably and get all the benefits of exercise through strength training,” said Cygan.It’s something that appeals to people who are in a particularly vulnerable age group when it comes to COVID-19 like Larry Fulhorst.“You look at a facility this big it's no problem staying six feet away from somebody everybody's wearing a mask,” said Fulhorst.It seems to be working for Exercise Coach. (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area is 12% contained Friday morning after scorching 11,000 acres and destroying three structures, authorities said.Firefighters, meanwhile, braced for dangerously hot weather caused by a heat wave this weekend."Near critical fire weather conditions could develop Friday afternoon and evening as gusty onshore winds could combine with warm and dry conditions in place," the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported Thursday.Crews were able to take advantage of improved fire weather conditions Thursday with slightly lower temperatures and moisture from the former hurricane Elida moving across the area, the department said."Current objectives include keeping the fire north of Castaic Lake, south of Highway 138, east of Red Rock Mountain and west of Tule Ridge," the department said.The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest and was 12% contained as of 7 a.m. Friday, according to the u. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments.The fire's size was listed as 11,000 acres Thursday night, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No injuries have been reported."There have been areas of this fire that have not burned in decades, (and) it's in inaccessible terrain, which has added to the complexity of the fire," said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.Although some structures were lost, a number of structures were saved by firefighters, he said."It's going to be a hot, dry summer -- and it's going to be a very, very hot, dry weekend," Osby said.On Wednesday, the fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The forest service and county fire departments quickly called in second-alarm responses.The fire was entirely on federal land, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.Mandatory evacuations were ordered for the area east of Ridge Route Road, west of Lake Hughes Road, north of Pine Canyon Road and Lake Hughes Road, and south of state Route 138, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. LEBANON, Indiana — A 4-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition after she was accidentally shot Thursday by her younger brother, police say.According to the Lebanon Police Department, the shooting happened at the children’s grandparent’s house in the 300 block of N. Park Street shortly after 10 a.m.The 4-year-old was shot in the head by her younger brother, believed to be 2 years old, police say.The 4-year-old was taken to Riley Hospital in critical condition, police say.
