SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman accused of killing another driver in a wrong-way crash while drunk on a San Diego freeway last year changed her plea Friday.Lauren Ashley Freeman pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury in the Feb. 26, 2018 collision that killed 35-year-old Justin Callahan.Freeman's plea dismisses a murder charge. She is scheduled to be sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison at a September hearing.RELATED: CHP reverses blame in fatal wrong-way crash on I-5 rampInitially, Callahan was deemed responsible for the crash. The position of his Volkswagen Jetta after the crash led CHP officers to believe he was at fault. But California Highway Patrol investigators reversed their findings after Callahan's family refuted the claim and the case was re-opened. Freeman was charged with causing the fatal crash in November.Callahan was driving to his Ocean Beach home from work in Chula Vista when the crash occurred on a transition ramp from northbound Interstate 5 and westbound I-8 just before 2 a.m.The 35-year-old died at the scene, while Freeman and a passenger in her Toyota Camry sustained major injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park is facing a setback after thieves broke into the theater.According to San Diego Police, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the building between Oct. 17 and 19. The thieves ransacked two separate, secured structures on the property.A number of high-end television production systems, autographed guitars, studio cameras, and other items were stolen. “The doors were physically broken down,” said Steve Stopper, founder of Save Starlight. “There’s been a lot of vandalism and theft and they had to have been here a long, long time.”Stopper said his foundation has been working for five years to bring life back to the theater that closed down in 2012. The City of San Diego has offered support to his organization.Repairs were being completed after a tree came crashing down on the Starlight Bowl months ago, lifting asphalt in the parking lot and crushing part of the building.“This is definitely kicking us back to almost a starting point again,” said Stopper.Security cameras and alarms were turned off as repairs to the building were underway.Stopper said the items stolen were worth well over ,000. Many, including the autographed guitars, were set to be auctioned off at a gala next year in an effort to raise money for the revitalization project.“We need someone to step up and help us,” said Stopper. “We need new options for the future.
