SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player.The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said.The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. Although the state pays for some of the expenses, the team needs the community to step up.“We need this opportunity to really display that the Southeast produces athletes, great young men, and character,” said Kirkland.San Diego High and Escondido’s Orange Glen High also qualified for the state finals and need financial help. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Time is running out to sign up for the San Diego Promise, a tuition-free college program within the San Diego Community College District. So far more than 1,700 students from 198 California high schools have signed up for the program, which provides tuition and textbook grants for up to two years for first-time, full-time students. The deadline to apply is June 28. Officials with the district say about three times more students have so far signed up compared to last year. “The San Diego Promise offers much more than a financial guarantee,” said Lynn Neault, SDCCD Vice Chancellor of Student Services. “The program’s many wrap-around services result in San Diego Promise students faring better than their non-Promise counterparts academically.”To sign up, students need to complete a fall 2019 admissions application for City, Mesa or Miramar colleges, complete a 2019-2020 FAFSA application and fill out a Promise application. All first-time students are eligible to apply, regardless of financial status, the district says. The program launched in 2016 with 186 students participating. During the 2017-2018 school year, that number increased to 661. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council approved dozens of regulation changes Tuesday that Mayor Kevin Faulconer says will increase the supply of housing while lowering development cost.The plan aims to create more homes, lower development costs and promote smart growth.The approval includes changes to the Affordable Housing Density Bonus program, which means developers will be able to build more units in the allotted space.The council also approved Faulconer’s 46 recommended updates to the land development code including easing zoning regulations to create more live/work developments, implementing parking exemptions for designated historic structures and changing ground floor height limits to allow for three-story buildings in 30-feet high limits.Some proposed changes to the Density Bonus Program include: 841

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Padres’ weekend series against the Mariners has been moved from Seattle to San Diego due to poor air quality in the Pacific Northwest.In a statement, the Padres said: “Due to air quality concerns in Seattle and out of an abundance of caution, the scheduled series between the Padres and Mariners from September 18-20 has been moved to Petco Park in San Diego. Friday’s game will begin at 6:40pm, Saturday’s game will begin at 6:10pm and Sunday’s game at 1:10pm.
