Both Uber and Lyft are suspending their Pool and Shared ride options as the companies work to limit personal interactions amid the outbreak of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. Uber was first to announce Tuesday morning that it’s suspending its Pool option in the United States, Canada, London and Paris. The Pool option matches riders heading in the same direction, so they can share the ride and cost. “Our goal is to help 456

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday the state's formula that will determine which school districts can reopen to students in September. The formula will be implemented between August 1 and August 7, based on COVID-19 data in each region. Schools in regions in Phase Four of their reopening at that time will be able to reopen to students if the region's daily infection rate remains 5% or lower over a 14-day average. After August 1, schools will close if their regional infection rate is greater than 9% over a seven-day average.Once reopening, schools must follow guidelines specific to their districts. The New York State Health Department has released its own guidelines, which will be used by districts to develop plans. The health department's guidelines include masks and PPE whenever students or staff cannot maintain social distancing (six feet of separation). It also includes guidelines on cleaning, screening, tracing, transportation and food service. You can read the guidelines here: Recovering, rebuilding, and renewing the spirit of our schools school reopening guidance from Adam Francis WKBW's Megan Erbacher first reported this story. 1182

A Utah man got quite the scare while hiking in Slate Canyon near Provo, Utah, over the weekend.Kyle Burgess, 26, was minding his own business in the Utah County wilderness around 5 p.m. Saturday when he came across some mountain lion kittens.Seconds later, their mom came around the corner — protective and aggressive. He caught the whole thing on video:“I didn’t really know what kind of cubs they were or what animal they were,” said Burgess. "Once I did realize what they were, I was like, that’s mom right there. I’m screwed.”What made it worse for the Orem man was that the encounter was a lengthy one. The video shows the animal shadowing Burgess for at least six minutes as he walked down the trail. At certain times, the mountain lion lunged at Burgess. But officials said Burgess did all the right things by not turning around, making himself "bigger," and making a lot of noise. The mountain lion kept following Burgess down the trail before he bent down and threw a rock, sending the animal running away. Doctors are seeing more children with an illness that can look a lot like the flu or cold. It's known as RSV. It stands for respiratory syncytial virus. It comes with the typical runny nose, cough and congestion we see in the wintertime. Adults can usually get over RSV without a problem. But it can be a lot more severe for young children.“From a newborn to a 3- or 4-year-aged child, and they go to a daycare or they're exposed to other kids who have a runny nose, cough or congestion. These kids can fall sicker much more, and will have more respiratory distress and dehydration than kids who are older,” says Dr. Purva Grover with Cleveland Clinic. Respiratory distress and dehydration are what makes RSV different from the typical cold. Doctors say some of the signs include shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Parents may be able to tell this is happening in a child if they're heavily breathing from both their nose and chest, as well as grunting noises. It's important that families see a doctor before this becomes respiratory failure. There isn't a vaccine specifically for RSV. But some doctors say they've been able to treat it with other vaccines. “There is a vaccine which is actually an antibody treatment that we give to the most vulnerable premature infants, those that are in their first year of life and were born very prematurely,” says Dr. James Gaensbauer, a pediatrics and infectious disease specialist at Denver Health. “But it's not an ideal thing, you have to give a shot every month for every five months that is typically the season.” Doctors can also do other things to treat the symptoms, like giving kids extra oxygen.RSV usually lasts about two weeks. 1707

DENVER, Colo. – Terri Gentry is a civil rights activist and volunteer at the Black American West Museum in Denver, Colorado. "My great grandfather – Dr. Thomas Ernest McClain – is the first black licensed dentist in Colorado," Gentry said. Her family lives on the walls of the museum, showcasing stories that will never be forgotten. “Coming in here for me is visiting my ancestors,” Gentry said. Confronting issues with the Ku Klux Klan and other incidents of racial discrimination, Gentry's great grandfather had many challenges, a lot to overcome in the early 1900s. However, he found a community that stood together and found the strength to rise up. Now they serve as an inspiration for Gentry and others who reflect on the past during Black History Month. “We get a lot of activity and action and response to Black History Month and then the interest wanes,” said Gentry. “But we’re here 365 days a year, so we hope that Black History Month gives highlight to us, but then it continues to create action for people to do things year-round.” Gentry says Black History Month was created to show how African Americans have helped to shape the United States, especially since their accomplishments haven’t always been recognized in mainstream education. “I remember being in school and there was one sentence about our experiences. And it said, ‘negroes were slaves,’" Gentry said. Black History Month is a time when we can reflect on the resistance to slavery and the impactful human beings who have fought for civil rights, like Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Rosa Parks. There are so many well-known people who helped progress equality in the U.S. But for Gentry, the most influential person in her life wasn’t somebody famous. “My grandmother, Ernestine Smith," Gentry said emotionally. Ernestine McClain Smith was the daughter of the dentist, and Gentry's grandmother. She was a dancer and performer, but more importantly, she was an advocate for civil and human rights. “My hope is that I continue her legacy. She impacted thousands of lives in our community,” Gentry said. Ernestine Smith always knew the importance of sharing stories from those in the past. “We’d walk into her bedroom when I was little, and she had this ancestral wall,” said Gentry. “So all of the pictures of her parents, her grandparents, her great grandparents were on this wall and she would talk to us about their stories and their history.” Those stories – and the stories millions of other African Americans hold dear—are what Gentry believes will help people from different backgrounds to connect. “I think that what Black History Month does is it opens the door for people to get another perspective.”When we understand each other’s perspectives, we often come to realize we’re not all that different in the end.“We’ve got to change our mindset and change our attitude and get rid of this issue about entitlement and get rid of this issue about ‘I’m better than you,’" Gentry said. "That’s killing us. That’s killing the country. We’ve got to change that idea and start embracing everyone… each and every individual that is here, that comes here, that’s been here. It’s time for a change.”  3203
