SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A connecting trolley line to San Diego's airport has taken another step closer to reality.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly signed an exclusive agreement at the Pentagon Thursday to redevelop the former SPAWAR facility, now "NAVWAR," into a transit hub. SANDAG and Navy plan to collaborate on a hub similar to "Grand Central Station" adjacent to the airport, as well as a modernized complex for Navy use."This new agreement is built on San Diego's strong naval heritage," Faulconer said. "The fact that it was signed by the Acting Secretary of the Navy inside the Pentagon sends the undeniable message that there is momentum and energy in both Washington, D.C. and San Diego to do something truly special with this property. It marks a huge next step in revitalizing this area into a civic asset that serves the U.S. Navy, the community and our regional transportation network."According to SANDAG, one option being explored last year would support housing, retail, and office space. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three San Diego County sheriff's deputies were justified in fatally shooting an Alpine man who charged at them with a knife in his hand last fall, according to a report released Wednesday by the District Attorney's Office.Daniel Ayala, 31, was shot 10 times outside his apartment in the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard last Nov. 12.Sgt. Chris Katra, Cpl. Sean McGillicuddy and Deputy Kevin Nulton responded to that address around 2:50 p.m. following reports that a man was screaming, talking about killing himself and others, and throwing items, according to a letter prepared by District Attorney Summer Stephan and addressed to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.Body camera footage from two of the lawmen was also released by the D.A.'s office.RELATED: Man who was fatally shot by deputies in Alpine identifiedAs the deputies approached the front door of Ayala's unit and knocked, announcing ``Sheriff's Department'' three times, Ayala opened the door, said ``What's up!'' and jabbed a knife twice through his metal screen door, the body-worn camera footage shows.The deputies backed up from the door as Nulton alerted the others by saying ``Knife, knife, knife.''Ayala then opened the screen door and advanced towards the lawmen, who opened fire, striking him mostly in the upper body, according to Stephan's letter.Ayala died at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A driver was taken into custody after a passenger in his car died following in a crash in Paradise Hills early Wednesday morning.According to San Diego police, an 18-year-old driver and four passengers were in a car traveling westbound in the 6100 block of Paradise Valley Road at around 2 a.m. when the crash occurred.Police said the driver tried to make “an unsafe left” onto southbound Munda Road, but the car veered off the roadway and went down an embankment.All five people were able to get out of the car and made their way back to the street, but police said an 18-year-old girl had to be taken to the hospital.The girl, who was not identified, later died at the hospital from internal injuries.The driver fled the scene, but officers -- with the help of a helicopter overhead -- found him hiding in bushes a few blocks away surrounded by coyotes.Jail records obtained by ABC 10News show the driver, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Douglas Jones, was booked on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing death/injury, and DUI.The crash remains under investigation. 1119
