With baseball, basketball, and hockey back underway, we can say sports are a thing again. The months of March, April, May, and June were difficult on lots of fans who value the role of sports in their lives, but some fans were making out just fine.“For three or four months, sports cards replaced sports as entertainment,” said Mike Fruitman, owner of Mike’s Stadium Sports Cards in Aurora, Colorado. “People were coming in saying, 'Give me a Jayson Tatum card,' and I’m like, 'You know he hasn’t played since March?'”Fruitman has been in business for 29 years and he says the last four years have been the most profitable in his career. That includes when the Broncos won the Super Bowl in 2016.“When there’s a baseball strike. When there’s football, basketball, hockey stoppages, people forget these [sports],” said Fruitman. “They get really disinterested in it. We didn’t have that this time.”For example, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the most popular sports figures in the world. He was only drafted four years ago, but already has amassed a career that has changed the quarterback position in the NFL. Coming into 2020, one of his rookie cards was trading at ,750.One month into 2020, he won the Super Bowl with the Chiefs, and then in early July, signed the most lucrative deal in sports history: 3 million over the course of 10 years.Only days after he signed that contract, the same rookie card was sold for ,475.“When you buy a card of a player it’s like buying stock in a company,” said Fruitman. "If there’s a tsunami that affects Apple, you’re going to see their stock depreciate one day. If they come out with the iPhone 13 and it’s the best iPhone and it cures whatever, their stock is going to go up, and you’re seeing much of the same thing with sports cards.”"A lot of the cards are selling for a lot more money than game worn jerseys and things like that,” added sports cards guru Rich Mueller. "It’s a commodity.”Mueller is the founder and managing editor of Sportscollectorsdaily.com and tracks market fluctuations in card prices. He says what we are seeing is something unprecedented because people have been so hungry for sports."COVID hit so you have people sitting at home, not going to games, not gambling, not spending money on vacation. EBay is accessible, so [they buy cards],” he said “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen and I lived through the 90s when there was a baseball card store on every corner.”And it’s not just sports fans buying and selling sports trading cards, but investors who are not interested in sports at all.Consider this: Bol Bol is a rookie basketball player for the Denver Nuggets. In June, before the new NBA season started, his card was trading for less than . Then, a few weeks ago, he posted 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 blocks in a scrimmage game, and the price shot up to more than because people wanted to get in on the low prices in case he panned out to be a great player.“The boxes that contain the cards have appreciated,” said Fruitman. “I can’t say every box, but most of them have appreciated by 50 percent, if not 100 percent. Especially basketball. It’s been unreal.” 3184

Winning nearly billion might cause some to be tempted to buy a fancy car or a huge mansion, but what if you could buy an entire professional sports franchise? If you hit the jackpot on Friday, that would be theoretically possible. The jackpot for Friday's Mega Millions is a lottery-record 0 million. As tickets are purchased, that jackpot figure could rise to close, if not more than, billion by Friday night's drawing. Assuming you did not have to pay taxes, what would 0 million get you in the professional sports world? According to Forbes, if you're looking for an NFL team, forget about it. The least valuable franchise in the NFL is the Buffalo Bills, which is worth .6 billion. Despite lackluster attendance in a small market, Buffalo, and similar markets such as Cleveland, Cincinnati and Tampa Bay benefit from revenue sharing and the league's hefty television rights package. It is a similar situation in the NBA, which has a valuable worldwide television audience. If Mega Millions climbs to billion, that would be just enough to purchase the New Orleans Pelicans. Despite their lack of recent success, the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers are the two most valuable franchises, according to Forbes. The Knicks are worth .6 billion, and the Lakers are valued at .3 billion. If you're looking to purchase a baseball franchise, your options are limited. The only team worth less than billion is Tampa Bay, which was valued by Forbes at 0 million. Six other teams are worth at or just above billion. In the NHL, you could afford to be picky. Out of 31 NHL teams, only four are worth more than billion. So unless you were hoping to purchase the Rangers, Maple Leafs, Canadiens or Blackhawks, you're in luck. NHL teams are valued less than NFL, MLB and NBA franchises due to its reliance on ticket sales and merchandise on revenues. Buying a soccer franchise in the US is a little more complicated. Although the most valuable team in the MLS is the Los Angeles Galaxy at 0 million, the league is considered a single entity. Instead of having individual owners, it has operator-investors. So theoretically you could purchase the rights to operate any MLS franchise you would like, the MLS technically would own the franchise. Of course one factor not considered is federal and state taxes, which would likely decrease winnings. But even in that case, purchasing an NHL or operating an MLS team is not impossible.  2531

White House officials and House Democrats said Friday they’re no closer to a deal with on a stimulus package, a week after extended unemployment benefits expired. While the White House said they believe a compromise can be made on some issues, the two sides remain far apart on funding state and local governments. Many states and municipalities are struggling due to decreased revenues and increased costs amid the pandemic. There is also disagreement among the parties, including Senate Republicans, on unemployment supplements as unemployment figures remain over 10%. From April into July, unemployed workers received an additional 0 unemployment supplement on top of standard unemployment benefits. But many Republicans grumbled that the supplement gave incentive for workers to stay home amid the pandemic.Generally, however, if an employer calls an employee back to work, they're no longer eligible for unemployment benefits.Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters on Capitol Hill Friday that he is going to recommend executive orders addressing student loan payments, evictions and unemployment supplements. Currently, federal student loan payments are frozen into October. Also, protection ended last week on evictions.President Donald Trump told reporters late Friday that he plans on signing the order "by the end of the week." But Trump said he expects there will be legal challenges to his order. Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said that there is broad agreement on some issues, such as funding for schools to safely operate amid the pandemic. Previously, the sides also said there is agreement on providing Americans with ,200 stimulus checks for the second time this year. But Mnuchin and Meadows pointed the finger at House Democrats for not compromising on the unresolved issues.“Just to hear the comments from Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi saying they “want a deal” when behind closed doors, their actions do not indicate the same thing,” Meadows said.Meanwhile, Democrats pointed the finger back at the White House for not reaching a compromise. While the White House suggested that it would be okay with a partial stimulus package, Democrats are calling for a more comprehensive bill.“We’re asking them to be fair, to meet us in the middle, not to have a my way or the highway attitude, which they seem to have,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said. “We can really get this done, because there are some areas where we didn’t come to an agreement on many things, but we narrowed our differences.”Both the House and Senate have adjourned for the weekend. 2622

While Election Day is still 19 days away, voters were already forced to make a decision on Thursday: Donald Trump or Joe Biden. While the decision will not show up on an official ballot or election, the choice Americans were forced to make was on which presidential town hall to watch. While having debates on competing networks might have made things challenging for swing voters, there are not many undecided voters left, according to polls. In a national poll released by "The Hill" yesterday, the survey found that 7% of voters remain undecided. On one network, Joe Biden calmy responded to questions from a socially-distanced audience in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump sparred with NBC News host Savannah Guthrie in a competing town hall there. The dueling town halls were held in lieu of a traditional town hall debate. The debate was scrapped after the Commission on Presidential Debates said that tonight’s debate would be held virtually. Trump opted out of a virtual debate, prompting Biden to schedule a forum on ABC News. Yesterday, Trump announced he too would hold a network-televised debate, this time on the NBC family of networks.Trump and Biden plan on debating next week in person for the final time. Biden said he would like to see Trump tested for the coronavirus at the next debate.“Yeah," Biden said when asked if Trump should be tested. "By the way, before I came up here, I took another test, I've been taking it every day, the deep test, you know, the one, they go in both [noses]. Because I wanted to be able to — if I had not passed that test, I didn't want to come here and not expose anybody."White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany originally stated that Trump was tested multiple times a day. But Trump has acknowledged that he wasn’t tested every day, and said during Thursday’s town hall he was unsure when his last negative test was before announced he was infected with the coronavirus on Oct. 2.“I don't know, I don't even remember,” Trump said. “I test all the time. I can tell you this. After the debate, like, I guess, a day or so, I think it was Thursday evening, maybe even late Thursday evening, I tested positive. That's when I first found out,While Biden answered questions on tax policy, Trump responded to a New York Times story on his personal taxes, and was pressed on details that he reportedly owes 0 million in taxes in the coming years. "I'm treated very badly by the IRS,” Trump said. “They treat me very, very badly. You have people in there from previous administrations. They treat me very badly. But we're under audit. It's very routine in many ways. But we're under audit. They like to change the game, change the rules, do everything,"Biden was pushed on whether he would raise taxes amid a pandemic and higher unemployment.“When I said the Trump tax cuts, about .3 trillion of the trillion in his tax cuts went to the top one tenth of 1%,” Biden said. “That’s what I’m talking about eliminating. Not all the tax cuts that are out there.” 3033

White House chief of staff John Kelly was interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller's team in recent months, three people with knowledge of the matter told CNN.Kelly responded to a narrow set of questions from special counsel investigators after White House lawyers initially objected to Mueller's request to do the interview earlier this summer, the sources said. Kelly is widely expected to leave his position in the coming days and is no longer on speaking terms with President Donald Trump, CNN reported earlier Friday.Kelly is the latest high-ranking White House official known to provide information for Mueller's investigation, though his interview marks a departure of sorts since Kelly didn't join the White House until July 2017. Most of the dozens of other interviews have been with people who were associated with the Trump campaign, were part of the transition or served in the early part of the administration. The Mueller questions to Kelly centered on a narrow set of issues in the investigation of potential obstruction of justice, chiefly Kelly's recollection of an episode that took place after new reporting emerged about how the President had tried to fire Mueller. The President was angry at then-White House counsel Don McGahn about what had been reported by The New York Times. McGahn had refused to publicly deny the reporting. The special counsel wanted to try to corroborate McGahn's version of events. The White House counsel's office had initially fought the Mueller request. One source familiar with the matter said that Emmett Flood wanted to make sure "ground rules" were negotiated."In order to question a government official about things that happened during the course of government business, you've got to show that it's highly important and you can't get it anywhere else," the source said. The source noted that the Kelly request came at a sensitive time, following raids of the home and office of Michael Cohen, the President's now-former lawyer. The resistance to Kelly doing an interview represented a key turn by the President and his attorneys who had previously allowed the special counsel to interview current and former White House staff and handed over hundreds of thousands of documents.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.
