GUANGZHOU, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese man convicted of murdering 11 people including three police officers over five years were executed Tuesday in Foshan City, south China's Guangdong Province, a local court said.Listed as one of the top wanted suspects, Cheng Ruilong, 37, was arrested in 2005 and was sentenced to death for murder, robbery and rape by Foshan Municipal Intermediate People's Court in February 2010. He was found to have murdered 11 people in a string of violence between May 1996 and January 2005.Cheng, a Guangdong native, was originally convicted of murdering 13 but the court dropped the number of victims in July's hearing of Cheng's appeal as bodies of a woman and her daughter allegedly killed by Cheng were never found.He lost the appeal. His execution had been approved by the Supreme People's Court, officials with Foshan intermediate court said.

KUNMING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 people were injured and more than 7,300 houses damaged in an earthquake that jolted Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southwest China Sunday.The earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 8:53 a.m., hitting an area bordering the two provinces.The epicenter, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, was located at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees longitude, according to the earthquake network center in Sichuan.Thirteen people were injured in the latest earthquake, and 7,354 houses were destroyed in the quake, including 122 houses being toppled, plus road cave-ins in Qiaojia County of Yunnan, according to Zhou Yingbin, deputy head of the county government.Another person was slightly injured in Ningnan County of Sichuan, local officials said, who added that nobody was reported dead or missing in the quake.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the importance of quality management, proper resettlement of people, environmental protection and preventing corruption in building the country's South-to-North Water Diversion Project.North China had long suffered from water shortages and the project is a strategic infrastructure goal that would benefit the Chinese people, Li told high-ranking government officials at a forum held Saturday in Nanyang, a city in central China's Henan Province.According to a design, a canal serving the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project will be in Nanyang City.Building the project concerns China's national economic and social development and the long-term development of the Chinese nation, said Li, also director of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Commission (SNWDPC) of the State Council.Further, the enormous complexity of the South-to North Water Diversion Project called for excellent coordination and organization in pushing forward the construction, he said.Li also stressed the importance of quality management in the project, saying quality control was the core task for building the project into a world-class one.Also, resettlement of people is a key issue in carrying forward the project, and efforts needed to be made to make sure that people are properly resettled and they have the capabilities to increase their wealth, he said.Additionally, Li said, during the process of building the project, more attention should be given to protecting water resources and preventing water pollution.He also called for strengthened supervision of the funding used for the project to prevent corruption and to punish those violating the law.The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of China, mainly the Yangtze, the country's longest river, to the country's arid northern part. It will consist of three routes: eastern, middle and western ones. The project started with construction of the eastern route in 2002.Up to now, both of the eastern and middle routes are already under construction. GUANGZHOU, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Floods, landslides and heavy downpours brought by typhoon Fanapi had claimed 55 lives in south China's Guangdong Province, while another 42 were still missing, local authorities said Thursday.Meanwhile, more than 1.26 million people were affected and 98,000 in low-lying areas were forced to be evacuated, a spokesman with the provincial civil affairs department said.Rainstorms and and geological disasters had destroyed more than 4,200 homes and inundated more than 48,700 hectares of cropland, the spokesman said.Direct economic losses were estimated at more than 2 billion yuan (300 million U.S. dollars), he said.Tonnes of relief supplies, such as tents, clothes, quilts, bottled water and rice, have been dispatched to the disaster-hit areas.Helicopters were used Thursday to airdrop relief materials to victims.Typhoon Fanapi, the 11th and strongest typhoon that hit China this year, landed in Fujian Province at 7 a.m. Monday, but wreaked most havoc in Guangdong, which neighbors Fujian on the south.No casualties have been reported in Fujian.
