Its frothy, malty, hoppy flavor has already won awards.Chula Vista's brewery scene has seen a spike over the last four years. Novo Brazil Brewing, Thr3e Punk Ales, Groundswell Brewing, Bay Bridge Brewery, and Chula Vista Brewery are among the players.While "craft beer in San Diego" isn't new to many around the county, more recently it's become a catalyst in revitalizing Chula Vista's Third Avenue.LIFE IN CHULA VISTA: Exploring the city's diverse historyTiago Carneiro, CEO of Novo Brazil Brewing, says part of their mission was to offer a taste of the North County scene to South Bay residents."We saw a huge opportunity. Whenever you go to the north, you have a lot of breweries already," Carneiro said. "We asked ourselves, why can’t we start a new story here in Chula Vista."And why not? "It's good for everyone."The "Capital of Craft," as San Diego is affectionately called, saw craft beer's might in 2018 to the tune of .2 billion in economic impact, an increase of 6% from 2017, according to the San Diego Brewers Guild. Novo itself plans to open a restaurant and brewhouse in Otay Ranch Town Center, its second location in Chula Vista since it opened in 2015.While Chula Vista's share of San Diego County breweries remains comparatively low, it's considered just the beginning of the "South Bay Uprising," a term used in calls for more craft beer in the South Bay. Craft options cropping up in National City and Imperial Beach could signal success for Chula Vista's scene. Breweries are doing their part, seen this month when Chula Vista Brewery took home a bronze medal at the Great American Beer Festival. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed before crashing into the side of a building in Chula Vista Wednesday afternoon. According to police, the initial call came in around noon as a drunk driver. Witnesses reported seeing a man in a tan SUV slumped over and followed him.Police say the SUV then slammed into a gate and crashed into the side of a self-storage building traveling roughly 10 to 15 miles per hour on Industrial Boulevard near L Street.When police arrived, they discovered that the man was dead inside the vehicle. Police confirmed later in the day Wednesday that the man was shot. Shortly before the crash, witnesses in the area reported hearing gunshots. Investigators are currently working to get surveillance video from the self-storage facility. Police are also asking that anyone with information on a possible suspect contact them.  932

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - It takes a lot to run a robot. Engineers need to fix and maintain the creation. Coders need to tell it what to do. Battery techs make sure power is abundant. Managers organize data.It sounds like a lot. But a group of Chula Vista students has it down to a science.Rancho Del Rey Middle School's Royal Robotics team is a "well-oiled machine," as they like to put it. And generally, some of them will be tournament champions so we do have to make our robot highly effective to combat them,"And the team has put in long hours to perfect their creation."They take the robot home with their parents' help and work on the weekends," teacher Kirk Braito said. "It's just an amazing amount of dedication."Thanks to the completeness of their design notebook, which houses all their data, the team hopes to grab the award for best design and have a championship banner to hang at Rancho Del Rey.But the team faces one last obstacle, getting to Kentucky."It is an enormous financial obligation that I'm trying desperately to make up because the funding is basically all us," Braito said.The team has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses and has raised almost half of their goal. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A survey of Chula Vista residents and businesses show the economic toll the pandemic has taken on the city.The results of the July survey were recently released. It polled 576 businesses and nearly 800 residents.It showed nearly all businesses have seen a decline in revenue during the pandemic. As of the end of July, only half of businesses surveyed were fully open. About half of the businesses in the report also decrease their workforce. It also said 60 percent of unemployment in the city is due to COVID-19 and many have struggled to find new job opportunities.60 percent of businesses surveyed said given current projections, they anticipate closing within six months.Alita Fernandez is the director of Play City in Eastlake, an indoor playground for children. She said her workplace has been closed since March.“On the business side, it’s been very tough, but also on the personal side,” Fernandez said.She is not surprised by the grim numbers reported in the survey.“There are expenses that need to be covered… money comes in, the same thing goes out,” Fernandez said. Except now, there is no money coming in for many businesses.Fernandez and 15 other employees have lost their jobs until the planned reopening in January 2021.
