SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating the murder of a man stabbed in the chest during a fight in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood.San Diego Police homicide detectives were called to the 3400 block of Newton Avenue Wednesday just before 11:30 a.m., near Interstate 15 and just a block away from Emerson/Bandini Elementary School. Police said they found a man stabbed in the chest at least once, following a fight at a homeless encampment under I-15.The man died at UCSD Medical Center.Police said they have the suspect accused of the murder in custody after several homeless people who witnessed the fight helped police track the suspect down at a nearby park.Police have identified the victim but are not releasing his name. The suspect was only identified as a 30-year-old man by police. 865

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Opening statements started Wednesday in the trial of a father accused of killing his two children in a fire at his Rancho Bernardo condo in 2017. Investigators said Henry Lopez passed out drunk with a lit cigarette, starting a fire that spread to the rest of the home. His children, 10-year-old Cristos and 7-year-old Isabella, died as a result of smoke inhalation. Lopez was also hospitalized with burns. Lopez’ ex-wife Nikia testified at his preliminary hearing in February 2018, saying the couple was in the custody of a divorce. Nikia Lopez also said her ex-spouse was an abusive alcoholic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval Medical Center San Diego has been selected as one of a handful of sites to participate in a coronavirus vaccine trial.The medical center will participate in phase III trials for vaccine candidate "AZD1222" developed by AstraZeneca, according to the Department of Defense. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- National City police are searching for the driver linked to a hit-and-run crash that killed a skateboarder earlier this month.Police said on July 10, at around 12:30 a.m., 28-year-old Victor Ernest Morales was riding his skateboard northbound on the street in the 500 block of Palm Avenue when he was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle at a high rate of speed.The vehicle sped away, leaving Morales on the road, police said. He suffered major injuries and later died.According to police, Morales’ girlfriend and a friend were with him at the time of the incident.The vehicle in the case is believed to be a silver-colored, 4-door, 1999-2002 Toyota Echo. Police said the vehicle likely has damage to the front driver’s side, as well as damage to the driver’s side headlight and windshield.A surveillance camera captured a photo of the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision, and police are asking any businesses in the area that may have video of the vehicle before or after the crash to contact them.Investigators are also asking vehicle repair shops to be on the lookout for the vehicle due to its damage from the crash.Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact the National City Police Department’s Investigations Unit at 619-336-4474 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.A reward of up to ,000 is being offered to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in the case. 1434
