NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. "The City of Nanjing is working to improve the quality of life of its residents with a global initiative that has potential to create a great opportunity for some in the United States."For over a decade, Nanjing "has reached beyond the borders of the People's Republic of China to create new strategies in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, increasing the level of understanding between our two nations and stimulating U.S.- China idea exchange," he said."It is expected that this international cooperative initiative will inure to the benefit of the residents of Nanjing as well to the residents of the United States, including businesses, residents and educational institutions in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," he said.Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province in East China, has forged close ties of cooperation and partnership with Boston and Massachusetts in 2008. The city government has hammered out a series of programs to lure top talents from overseas."This is the first time for the U.S. Congress to recognize a model for a Chinese City for the partnership in entrepreneurship innovation, technology and education," Gene Hartigan, co-chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday."This will get great attention from leaders in Washington D.C. and become the model for cooperation in the future between the U.S. and China in partnership in these areas," he said. "Currently the US and Chinese government have a platform called Strategic and Economic Dialogue. BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- China's centrally administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) jointly donated over 1.42 billion yuan (212.53 million U.S. dollars) for charitable work during the first half of 2010, the state assets watchdog said Monday.The money came from 107 of the 125 central SOEs which are overseen by China's State Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC), according to a statement posted on the SASAC's website.Some 53.63 percent of the donated funds went to disaster-hit areas, including China's southwest provinces, which were hit by a once-in-a-century drought earlier this year, and Yushu Prefecture of Qinghai Province, where a devastating earthquake struck in April.China's largest coal producer, Shenhua Group, and two oil giants, PetroChina Co. and China National Offshore Oil Corp., ranked top three in the list of the most generous donors, with their donation accounting for 36.78 percent of the total.

BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- China has hailed its relationship with Thailand, calling the bilateral relationship exemplary.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang made the remarks in a meeting with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, Suthep Thuagsuban, in Beijing on Monday.During the meeting, Li reviewed the 35 years of diplomatic ties between China and Thailand.Li said the two countries understand and respect each others' core interests.Calling the bilateral relationship a treasure for both nations, Li said the relationship is "a paradigm for how China and its neighboring countries can exist in harmony and benefit each other."Li highlighted the soaring trade volume between China and Thailand.He said China hopes to step up communication and deepen all-round trade cooperation with Thailand, as the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement boosts economic engagement.Suthep said Thailand values its ties with China and that it hopes to expand cooperation with China in all fields.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with.
