AURORA, Colo. — Three Aurora Police Department officers who were fired last week over their involvement in taking a picture in front of the memorial for Elijah McClain while mocking the chokehold officers used on him before his death, then sending it in a group text, have appealed their dismissals.Officers Erica Marrero and Kyle Dittrich both submitted their appeals on Wednesday, Aurora spokesperson Michael Bryant said. The Aurora Civil Service Commission will next schedule hearing dates within 15 to 30 days, though those hearings could be pushed back if extensions are filed.Marrero and Dittrich were two of the three officers pictured in the photos taken last October. A third officer in the photos, Jaron Jones, resigned last week before he could be fired.And on Thursday evening, Bryant confirmed that a fourth officer involved in a group text in which the photos were sent, Jason Rosenblatt, who was also fired because he responded "ha ha" to the photos, had filed an appeal over his termination.The fired officers had 10 days to file an appeal from last Friday.“It is my prerogative," Aurora’s Interim Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said in announcing last week the terminations. "And the public outcry and demand for justice for Elijah — they don't deserve to wear a badge anymore. I accelerated [the discipline process], and I was able to do that legally and I felt it was the right thing for this community."The photos were taken on Oct. 20, 2019, nearly two months after McClain's violent encounter with police. Dittrich, Marrero and Jones were on duty and had completed a service call in the area where McClain was detained in August.The three officers posed for a selfie, with Dittrich taking the photo and Jones putting his arm around Dittrich's neck, according to department investigative documents released Friday.Dittrich then texted the photo to two officers, Rosenblatt and Nathan Woodyard, who was also involved in the original McClain incident.Woodyard did not respond and deleted the photo, Wilson said. Woodyard was not disciplined in the incident.Rosenblatt responded, "ha ha," according to the investigation.McClain, 23, was unarmed when he was encountered by Aurora police on Aug. 24, 2019. Police put McClain in a carotid hold, which limits blood flow to the brain, after stopping him while he was walking home. When he became unresponsive, paramedics gave him ketamine, police have said.McClain had a heart attack and died six days later.The officers involved in McClain's death were not arrested or charged, despite continued calls for justice from McClain's family and supporters.In June, as McClain's death garnered national interest, Gov. BALTIMORE — A 79-year-old New York woman lost thousands of dollars after she fell for the "grandparent scam."Earlier this week, the woman received a call from someone posing as her granddaughter. The woman on the phone said, "Grandma, I need help," then handed the phone to someone claiming to be her lawyer.Susan Mayorga's mother thought it was her eldest granddaughter on the phone and agreed to hear the man out."He said, you need to send me ,000 immediately in cash, wrapped in a magazine, here's the address, send it overnight early delivery UPS, and everything will be cleared up," said Mayorga.Mayorga's mom went straight to the bank, then to UPS where she mailed ,000 in cash to 208 South Loudon Avenue, a vacant home in Baltimore. The next day, she received another call.“[He said], 'Oh, I didn't realize there's a gun involved and gunpowder went off, so it's more than a misdemeanor, we need another ,000,'” said Mayorga.Her mom only had ,000 left, and sent it. But before it got there, Mayorga's mom discovered her granddaughter was fine. She immediately told her children and they got to work calling UPS.“I immediately got the tracking number, I called UPS, and spoke to a supervisor and told them it's a scam, there's cash in the envelope this cannot be delivered. It's a scam, please hold the envelope and have it sent back,” Mayorga said.UPS tracking history shows they received a request to place the order on hold, but it was still delivered.“Someone was outside waiting for it and signed his name at 7 a.m. and took the package and left,” Mayorga said.Last year, 1 in 5 people lost money to impostor schemes like the grandparent scam. The total loss amounted to 8 million, according to the Federal Trade Commission. And scammers get away with it because they know people will do anything for the ones they love.“It's just sad because she doesn't have a lot of money and she’s like, I would do anything, give my last penny for my grandchildren, so it's just extra sad,” said Mayorga.Mayorga’s mother called the scammer and he answered. He said he received the package but wanted to know why she tried to hold it up. When she said she knew it was a scam, he threatened her then hung up.UPS said they're investigating what happened to the package. 2315

As people prepare to travel for Christmas, experts are concerned about another spike in coronavirus cases.We are almost a month out from Thanksgiving, and according to the COVID Tracking Project, more than 47,000 people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19 since Thanksgiving.And although the CDC advised against traveling, the Transportation Security Administration screened 9.5 million travelers during the 10-day Thanksgiving travel period.TSA also screened more than 3.2 million people at airports nationwide this past weekend.And as people gear up to spend the Christmas holiday with loved ones, the surge of new COVID-19 cases continues with no end in sight.The Harvard Global Health Institute and Brown School of Public Health created a risk-assessment tool that color-codes states with over 25 new daily cases per 100,000 people. As the NBA prepares to resume the 2020-21 season tomorrow, basketball commissioner Adam Silver told Good Morning America on Wednesday that the league would “cease completely” if an outbreak of the virus occurred within the league.Silver’s comments come as baseball’s Miami Marlins has had a number of its players and coaches test positive for the virus in recent days, forcing the team to suspend play for the week. Likewise, the Philadelphia Phillies, which played the Marlins last weekend, have suspended several games this week.“it’s not an exact science because nobody’s ever done this before,” Silver said. “I think we have plans in place where we might pause, similar to what baseball is doing now. Probably, if we had any significant spread is immediately stop. One thing we’d try do is try to track those cases to determine where they’re coming from and whether there had been spread on campus. And, I think the rules are a little unclear for that. If you’re not within six feet of others then I think it’s okay, but certainly if you’re on a crowded hiking trail, or are in a condition where you’re near others, you should wear a mask and at least put it on when you’re within six feet of others," said Dr. Savor Price.She says the biggest reason to wear a mask isn’t necessarily for your own protection, although you do get moderate protection from them.
