SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego County health officials this weekend reported 310 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths, raising the region's totals to 10,794 cases while the death toll remained at 338.The number of COVID-19 tests reported to the county Saturday was 4,413, with 7% positive new cases. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive tests is 2.8%.As of Sunday, the number of cases requiring hospitalization was 1,619 and the number admitted to an intensive care unit was 449.The largest portion of cases, 2,152, have been found in residents age 20 to 29 years old. Gavin Newsom wouldn't be implemented until numbers go down.As part of the 13 public health triggers announced earlier this month, the county could take industry-specific actions, pause all reopening efforts or even dial back reopenings if enough of the metrics rise above a certain threshold. The threshold for community outbreaks -- defined as three or more lab-confirmed cases from different households -- was fewer than seven in a week's span.Two new community outbreaks were reported Friday, offsetting three outbreaks which "fell off" the county's one-week rolling monitoring period. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped slightly to 3.2 percent in November, with nonfarm industries adding nearly 10,000 jobs, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday. The November unemployment rate is down from a revised 3.3 percent in October and even further below the 3.5 percent rate in November 2017. Total nonfarm employment increased by 9,800 jobs from October to November while total farm employment lost 300 jobs. Nonfarm employment now totals 1,503,800 in San Diego County and farm jobs total 8,500. The trade, transportation and utilities industry added 5,900 jobs month-over-month, the most of any industry in the county. Government was the county's only other industry to add more than 800 jobs, increasing by 2,900. According to EDD data, 1,300 of the government jobs added were in the state and local education sub-industries. The leisure and hospitality industry continued to lose jobs as 2018 recedes further away from the summer months. The industry lost the most jobs of any in the county from October to November at 1,300. Year-over-year data showed an employment increase of 26,400, all nonfarm jobs, from November 2017 to November 2018. A majority of those gains, 16,500 jobs, came in the professional and business services industry. Year-over-year farm employment stayed steady at 8,500 jobs. California's unadjusted unemployment rate dipped from 4.1 percent in October to 3.9 percent in November, according to the EDD. The university's branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research also ranked 42nd among the top biomedical science non-governmental organizations in the country.The rankings come from Nature Index, which tracks high-quality scientific research, studies and articles and the institutions with which they're associated. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott announced litigation today against opioid manufacturers including Purdue Pharma for what she called their role in the country's ongoing opioid addiction crisis.The federal lawsuit also names members of the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma. Elliott's lawsuit is aimed at forcing the defendants to fund rehabilitation and drug-education programs in the city and recoup the funds the city has spent on medical treatment for opioid abuse and homelessness caused by opioid abuse.Purdue Pharma officials could not be reached for immediate comment on the lawsuit.With the lawsuit, Elliott said she expects to join more cities, counties and states to form a multi-district litigation.``Opioid manufacturers have profited handsomely from the human suffering they intentionally inflicted through manipulation and deceit,''Elliott said. ``While San Diego will long deal with the destructive consequences of their greed, we intend to hold them accountable for funding drug treatment and education programs that will protect the health and safety of San Diegans.''Elliott's office plans to prosecute the pharmaceutical companies and the Sackler family for allegedly violating the state's ``unfair competition''law and for violating the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The body of a 14-year-old boy was found near railroad tracks by a maintenance crew in the Bay Ho neighborhood, sheriff's officials said.At about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, the crew discovered someone who appeared to be struck by a train in the area of 6000 Santa Fe St., according to Lt. Thomas Seiver of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department homicide unit.After an investigation at the scene by the sheriff's Railroad Enforcement Team, the homicide unit took over the case, Seiver said.The boy has been identified and his next of kin notified, but his name is being withheld because it may jeopardize the investigation, the lieutenant said.The county Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the boy's death, Seiver said.Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the sheriff's homicide unit at 858-285-6330 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 929
