I did however suspend these practices, to remove any misperceptions about our commitment to delivering the nation’s election mail,” DeJoy stated in his opening remarks.During questioning, DeJoy clarified that his changes were intended to get the trucks to run on time, as a fundamental change needed for the whole process to be more efficient.“If the trucks don’t run on time, the mail carriers can’t leave on time,” DeJoy said, defending the change, explaining that late trucks lead to overtime and late night deliveries.A story from NewsChannel 5 found that this policy change is leading to empty mail trucks leaving without its intended cargo in order to leave on time.A heated exchange happened during Monday’s hearing, when Representative Stephen Lynch asked DeJoy if he would put mail sorting machines back, reportedly removed earlier this summer, before the election.“Will you put the machines back?” Representative Lynch pressed multiple times, reaching a shouting level.“No, I will not,” DeJoy repeatedly answered.DeJoy has argued the machines were planned to be removed as part of a transition to more package-handling equipment since the post office is handling fewer letters.A little later, during questioning from Representative Ro Khanna, DeJoy seemed to indicate he may put the machines back. Rep. Khanna asked how much money it would take to put the machines back, if the appearance of doing so helped Americans feel confident about voting and sending mail. He asked if it would take a billion dollars.DeJoy responded that Congress “couldn’t get the money,” referencing stalled efforts to pass bipartisan legislation, and the history of not funding the postal service.However, when pressed by Rep. Khanna, DeJoy responded, “Get me a billion (dollars) and I’ll put the machines in.”During the questioning, DeJoy stated he was “surprised by the lack of attention paid to the postal service in the last decade,” referencing comments from a handful of representatives that the postal service has struggled financially for years.The Postmaster General says the postal service is funded through late 2021 without new funding approved by Congress.The House Oversight Committee held a hearing on Monday on operational changes at the Postal Service that have resulted in mail delays across the country, as well as to look into concerns about the process DeJoy became the postmaster general.DeJoy testified before a Senate committee on Friday, answering similar questions.Acknowledging an expected surge in mail-in ballots because of the coronavirus pandemic, DeJoy said Monday voters should request mail-in ballots at least 15 days before the Nov. 3 election to ensure they have enough time to receive their ballot, complete it and mail it back to elections officials on time.The House approved legislation Saturday to reverse the changes and send billion to shore up the agency ahead of the election.In a statement Sunday, the Postal Service said it greatly appreciates House efforts to assist the agency, but remains concerned that some of the bill’s requirements, “while well meaning, will constrain the ability of the Postal Service to make operational changes that will improve efficiency, reduce costs and ultimately improve service to the American people.″ 4411

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — A Vista bike shop owner is fed up after his shop was broken into for the third time in six months.Early Sunday morning, Jesse McCormack got a call from his security company. The person on the phone notified him that thieves had gotten into his shop, 211 Bikes, again.“I woke up in an immediate panic,” McCormack said.This month, he was supposed to be celebrating his one year anniversary at the location. Instead, he is filing yet another police report.The surveillance video shows a man wearing a hoodie and shorts ransacking the shop, snipping cable locks, and running out.The man captured on the security video took a 2017 MASI Volare worth ,199, a MASI Vivo Uno worth ,999, a Haro Shredder 12" worth 0, a rack of sunglasses worth ,000, and several important files.The first time 211 Bikes was the target of a crime was last October, just six months after opening. No one was arrested for the crime. “It was a wake-up call,” McCormack recalled.The second break-in was on December 10, 2017. Five rare road bikes, along with other equipment, were stolen. “There’s some nights that I don’t really want to go home,” McCormack sighed. “I just feel like I need to stay the night here, and just keep an eye on things.”In the last six months, McCormack has lost at least ,000. He and his landlord have put up new security cameras, LED lights, locked up the bikes, even changed the dead bolts.When one of the stolen bikes was listed on online sale app, he even worked with detectives to arrest the seller. But the thefts continued.McCormack recently got a call from another bike shop owner. They sent McCormack a photo of a man, riding a rare and expensive road bike in San Marcos —The exact one that was stolen from his shop in December.He immediately noticed that the leg tattoo on this rider was very similar, if not a match, to the tattoos on the man captured on Sunday morning’s surveillance video.“He matches the description I have of the prior incident,” McCormack said.This could be a break, he said, hoping that somebody recognizes the man, and turns him into the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.“Action needs to be taken,” McCormack said. “We need to have the ability to feel safe, in order to conduct business, especially as a small and vulnerable business owner, who is operating on a shoe string budget."McCormack is now working with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, asking for increased patrols in the area.He thought about changing locations. (CNS) - A murder conviction was reversed Friday for a 73-year-old former Valley Center resident, who was convicted in 2001 of killing her husband and was serving a 25-years-to-life sentence, but may receive a new trial due to newly discovered DNA evidence.Jane Dorotik was found guilty of the murder of 55-year-old Robert Dorotik, whose body was found on Feb. 13, 2000, one day after his wife said he disappeared after going jogging, prompting her to report him missing.District Attorney's Office spokesman Steve Walker said "newly discovered DNA evidence developed from advanced technology unavailable at the time of the 2001 jury trial" led the D.A.'s office to concede a habeas corpus petition filed by Dorotik's attorneys, thus reversing the conviction.Dorotik was released from the California Institution for Women in Corona in April amid the COVID-19 pandemic and will remain out of custody on her own recognizance. Attorneys will reconvene Oct. 23 to discuss the possibility of a retrial."After fighting for nearly 20 years to overturn my conviction, I am so grateful to finally see this day," Dorotik said in a statement released by her attorneys."Frankly, I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment," she said. "I have maintained from day one that I had nothing to do with my husband's murder. Spending almost two decades in prison falsely convicted of killing the man I loved has been incredibly painful. I lost literally everything in my life that Bob and I had built together."Prosecutors alleged that Dorotik beat her husband to death in their bedroom in the Valley Center horse ranch they rented, then dumped his body on the side of a road a few miles away.Medical examiners concluded he died of blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation, which prosecutors alleged was committed with a hammer and rope.The prosecution theory was that Dorotik killed her husband because she would have to pay him 40% of her income in the event of a divorce.Attorneys from Loyola Law School's Project for the Innocent say Dorotik was wrongfully convicted and submitted the habeas corpus petition alleging issues with the DNA evidence and testimony used to convict her.Her attorneys say newly conducted DNA testing of the victim's clothing, fingernails and a rope alleged to be one of the murder weapons showed no evidence of Dorotik's DNA, excluding her presence from the crime scene.They also alleged a prosecution expert witness testified during Dorotik's trial that stains found in the bedroom were her husband's blood, even though most of the stains were not tested and never confirmed to be blood at all.During an afternoon hearing at the Vista courthouse, Deputy District Attorney Karl Husoe said some of the new evidence stems from "the results of the retesting of some physical items of evidence" and noted "the DNA evidence as it exists now in 2020 is much different in quality and quantity than presented at trial in 2001."The prosecutor said the new evidence "undermines the previous evidence presented at trial to the extent that a new trial would be granted by this court."Additionally, Husoe said the D.A.'s office received "new information regarding lab personnel which our office was previously unaware of, but (was) recently made known to us," but did not elaborate on the content of that information.Walker said, "Ultimately, this office intends to pursue DNA testing and retesting of the available evidence in this case using modern and advanced DNA technology available to us today. Department of Health has released an open letter appealing to all White House staff and those attending a Sept. 26 event in the Rose Garden to seek medical advice and take a coronavirus test.The letter indicates a lack of confidence in the White House medical team’s contact tracing efforts for the virus outbreak that infected President Donald Trump, multiple senior staff members and two U.S. senators, among others.Co-signed by nine other local health departments from neighboring jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia, the letter says contact tracing on the outbreak has been insufficient and “there may be other staff and residents at risk for exposure to COVID positive individuals.”The move highlights the public health dilemma faced by Mayor Muriel Bowser’s administration regarding the current outbreak.
