SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two people were arrested on suspicion of vandalizing a school in the College East area late Thursday night.At around 11 p.m., San Diego police were called to Harriet Tubman School on 6880 Mohawk St. in response to two people seen on the campus.When officers arrived, the two people ran away. Following a brief foot chase, police caught the pair and took them into custody.Police said officers discovered a classroom with a window that was smashed, a vandalized TV screen inside a room and graffiti.Officers also found fireworks they believe the two people planned to set off. 603

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - You probably don't know Encinitas resident Carol Areas, but you may have seen her words of encouragement scattered thorough San Diego. Ten years ago, she and her son began writing positive messages on rocks and leaving them around the city. Now they receive messages of people making their own rocks around the world.When Areas learned her son had Asperger's, she was compelled to start a new project, the Love it Forward List. "I felt the need to connect with people, to receive love, to know people are caring," said Areas. Whenever she hears someone is going through a hard time, she rally's volunteers to send them some love. "Five years now writing snail mails! I love that!" said Areas.So when she learned about 5-year-old Noah Avery and his 7-year-old sister Kalea, she called on her army of comfort warriors. "The moment I heard about this story, I thought we had to do a campaign for them," said Areas.In June of 2018, Kalea was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor. "Thirteen days after we were told our daughter had a brain tumor, we were told our son Noah had a brain tumor," recalls their mother, Nohea Avery. There are only a handful of cases known of siblings being diagnosed with this cancer, doctors say. And Nohea says her doctors don't know any cases of siblings being diagnosed at the same time. "To have two, you kind of just, you go into survival mode. I always tell people well, we don't have a choice. You wake up every day, and you show up for them every day, and you kind of just, one foot in front of another," said Nohea. This summer, both kids were in remission, but then doctors found a small tumor in Noah's brain. They're traveling to Rady Children's Hospital each week from Los Angeles for proton radiation. But Nohea says throughout every challenge, complete strangers like Areas have shown up along the way. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Across San Diego County, most law enforcement agencies have been focusing on education rather than enforcement regarding violations of the county’s public health order.The goal is to get people to comply voluntarily.“What we’re trying to do here is educate the public so that ultimately we can save lives,” said San Diego Sheriff, Bill Gore.In the City of Coronado, police have been offering people free facial coverings.“To approach folks in an enforcement posture, I’m not sure we’re going to get the type of compliance we need,” said Coronado Police Chief Chuck Kaye. “When we see folks that are not using face coverings we say ‘hey can we offer you a face covering?’”This Fourth of July weekend is expected to be busy, especially at local beaches.California Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered all parking lots of state beaches in Southern California and the Bay Area to be closed for the weekend.The City of Oceanside has also decided to close off its beach parking lots.So far, no community COVID-19 outbreaks have been linked to outdoor settings.“I spoke to a number of the coastal mayors and said ‘are you confident you can enforce the physical distancing at your beaches?’” said county’s supervisor, Nathan Fletcher. “They said they can so we have to trust them that they can do that as we move forward into the weekend,” said San Diego County supervisor Nathan Fletcher.“We have our normal patrols in our coastal towns that we police for,” said Gore. “We’re not planning to add enforcement details to be specifically walking on the beaches to look at who’s wearing a mask, who’s socially distanced or not.”Gore said he expects beachgoers to comply with social distancing and facial covering rules when required.Under the latest public health order, restaurants must close to the public from 10 PM TO 5 AM.Bars, wineries, and breweries that don’t serve food must completely close down. Wineries that operate outside are an exception and may stay open.“State regulatory teams will be in different regions, we’ll be working with that team here which part of it is Alcohol Beverage Control and our county regulatory agency,” said Gore. “So, we can do enforcement if we don’t get that voluntary compliance that we’re seeking,” said Gore.The San Diego Police Department said it's anticipating crowds this weekend and will have extra officers patroling the beaches and bays to keep people safe.
