An arrest has been made after authorities say a driver intentionally rammed another car in Southern California, killing three teenage boys and injuring three others. The California Highway Patrol says the Toyota Prius was hit Sunday night in Temescal Valley, went off the road and slammed into a tree. Three boys died and three had moderate injuries. A witness followed the other car and CHP officers arrested 42-year-old Anurag Chandra of Corona in a neighborhood near the accident scene. He was booked on suspicion of murder with malice. It's unclear whether he has an attorney. 593
Another person has died from an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in North Carolina, bringing the death toll to four. None of the victims have been identified by authorities and health officials have not discussed the circumstances of their deaths. There have been 141 confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease, an airborne lung infection, or Pontiac Fever, a milder form of the disease since last month. Health officials said nearly all of those infected were attending the NC Mountain State Fair in Fletcher between September 6 and 15.The outbreak has been linked to a hot tubs display in one events center and officials said it took place during the last five days of the fair, a preliminary report shows. In addition to the four deaths, 94 people were hospitalized. There were no other significant sources of aerosolized water -- small droplets of water or mist that can be inhaled -- at the event center, and no other ongoing potential sources of exposure identified, the health department has said.Legionnaires' disease is a lung infection contracted when people breathe in the Legionella bacteria through a mist or by accidentally getting water into their lungs that contains the bacteria. The disease is serious but can be treated with antibiotics, the department said. About 1 in 10 people who get sick from Legionnaires' disease die, a recent government report found.Legionella bacteria are found naturally in the environment but can become a health concern when they "spread in human-made water systems like hot water tanks, cooling towers of air conditioning systems, decorative fountains and hot tubs or spas that are not properly maintained," the North Carolina health department said. 1708
At a news conference on Thursday, federal and state investigators pleaded with the public to give them time to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody on Monday. Floyd died after Derek Chauvin, a now fired Minneapolis police officer, held a knee against Floyd’s neck for several minutes, despite pleas from Floyd and bystanders. Chauvin and three other officers were fired on Tuesday for their role in the incident. Video of Monday’s incident quickly spread on social media, prompting unrest in Minneapolis. Video of the incident made its way to the White House, where President Donald Trump said Thursday that he was “very upset” about the incident. Demonstrators nationwide have called on charges to be filed against Chauvin. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey joined protesters in calling for charges based on the video evidence. While a number of civil rights leaders have called for peace, some did not heed the pleas. A number of Twin City businesses were vandalized and looted on Wednesday and Thursday, prompting the activation of the National Guard. When asked why the video was not enough evidence to produce probable cause for a criminal charge against Chauvin, Hennepin County Attorney Michael Freeman told reporters, “There is other evidence that doesn’t support a criminal charge.”Freeman was joined by members of the FBI and US Attorney’s Office, who said speaking out on an investigation when no charges are pending is unusual for federal law enforcement officials. But the officials stressed the importance of informing the public that an active investigation is underway was important as unrest continued for the third straight night in Minnesota. State and federal prosecutors called on the public to assist with the investigation, and requested anyone with information or video from Monday's incident to reach out to investigators. "Our role in this investigation is to investigate allegations of willful violations of federal civil rights," FBI Special Agent Rainer S. Drolshagen said. "The FBI team is following the path where the facts will lead us. We are conducting a swift, yet meticulous, investigation. In less than 72 hours, much work has been done, but I assure you there's much more to be accomplished." 2291
