SAN DIEGO (KGTV/CNS) - A San Diego mom is hoping the county's new plan to provide more affordable housing will help keep her off the street. Leticia Rodriguez, her mom, and two kids have been living in Rodriguez's van the last several months, but right now the van is in the shop. They're hoping to get into the San Diego Rescue Mission. It would be their first time sleeping at a shelter."You have to come back at  5 ' o'clock and line up and you know, wait to get in, every day, until you get a bed," said Rodriguez. Rodriguez makes  an hour as a team leader at Jack N' The Box. She's been looking for a place she can afford for more than a year. "You can get a studio for 0 then you're lucky, but then they say how many are you? SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- On Wednesday, San Diego County health officials reported seven new COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the regions total to 406.Healthcare workers witness this firsthand; many have been by their patients' side during the final moments."We hold their hands, we let them talk to their loved ones through electronic devices," said Dr. Salam Yatooma, an internal medicine physician at Sharp Grossmont. "It's very painful, actually the most stressful thing for us doctors and especially nurses."In his twelve years at the hospital, Yatooma said he has never witnessed anything like this.Yatooma has been on the frontlines since the pandemic began, and while many people have let their guards down, he reminds everyone the virus hasn't gone anywhere. Healthcare workers haven't had a break."There has been an increase, a significant increase, in the number of patients of hospitalizations that we see," he said. "It's definitely correlated with the relaxing of restrictions that the state and county are implementing. People were not wearing masks. People continued to have large gatherings, especially indoors, and people were not socially distancing. Unfortunately, this is going to start to show more and more now."Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said in the last seven days, there have been 24 community COVID-19 outbreaks.The latest outbreaks reported happened in a healthcare setting, a restaurant or bar, a gym, a daycare, and a resort or spa.The outbreaks in community settings are defined as three or more positive COVID-19 cases in people from different households.To date, there have been 17,842 positive cases locally, about 11 percent have required hospitalization, according to the county health officials.Yatooma said while most hospitalized patients he has seen are older in age with underlying health issues, over the last several weeks, there has been a new trend."We did notice there's been an increasing number in the younger people," he said. "20 to 40-years-old."He said he doesn't expect things to slow down at hospitals in the coming months as more people head out, especially during flu season."This is a very dangerous trend we're going into. In the coming few months that we start having the flu," Yatooma said. SAN DIEGO (KTGV)— A homeless man and convicted rapist accused of sexually assaulting a woman at an East Village bar in November faced his accuser in San Diego Superior Court. Gary Cushinberry, who's accused of multiple counts of sexual assault and attempted rape, pleaded not guilty. The judge ordered all media to conceal the victim’s identity, and to refer to her as Jane Doe. Jane Doe took the stand and recalled what happened on the evening of November 5th. She said she was at Amplified Kitchen and Beer Garden in East Village, celebrating with some colleagues.After having a few drinks, she headed to her car. She admitted she was drunk at the time, and her memory was hazy. But she did remember the moment her bottom touch the ground.“He was touching underneath the blanket, and I just remember being shocked. Uh, next he further proceeded to put his hand in my pants,” Doe said. While he attacked her on the ground underneath a dirty blanket, he tried to drug her with what she thought was a meth pipe, Doe continued. Detective Carlos Munoz of the San Diego Police Department also spoke in open court. After the case was assigned to him, he monitored surveillance cameras in the area. The detective found footage of a homeless man fitting Gary Cushinberry’s description, pulling Jane Doe into a bush next to her car. The two were not in frame for the next 25 minutes, until video captured Jane Doe speeding away from the parking lot, back into Amplified, where she later reported the assault.“It’s like you imagine a fight or flight. And I didn’t really fight and I didn’t flight. I just froze,” Doe said. Cushinberry, who is already a convicted rapist in Indiana, returned to the frame, just two minutes later. “When he walks up toward the intersection, or the corner, he is adjusting his belt, he is adjusting his waist,” Detective Munoz said. The next day, Jane Doe provided information for a suspect sketch.Officers also took her to Palomar Hospital to run a rape kit. DNA Criminalist Adam Dutra of the San Diego Police Department Crime Lab tested the DNA swab taken from the front button and zipper of Jane Doe’s shorts.“There was strong support for the inclusion of Mr. Cushinberry as the 98% contributor,” Dutra said. Cushinberry’s past convictions include rape in 1995, sexual battery in 1997, and recently, felony robbery in San Diego.His next court appearance is on December 19th. 2407

SAN DIEGO, California — Dozens of voters were left off the roster at a San Diego County polling place on Election Day, leading to frustration and delays.The problem was reported Tuesday morning at Pacific Trails Middle School at 5975 Village Center Loop Road in Carmel Valley.Poll workers received an incomplete roster which omitted 46 names, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu confirmed. The list was missing two and a half pages.Voters waited for voting officials to reprint another roster and deliver it to the polling place.Officials tried to ease the long line by calling the Registrar of Voters and getting approval for each person over the phone, a voter told KGTV television station.Voters also had the option of voting provisionally, but many of them declined, telling KGTV they wanted their votes to count. Provisional voting requires extra processing time to verify residences and identities.The San Diego Superior Court announced Monday it would have a judicial officer on hand to deal with any possible election-related issues, including registration, denial of registration of voters, certification or denial of certification of candidates or the certification or denial of certification of ballot measures.Voters were encouraged to contact the Registrar of Voters at 858-565-5800 with any concerns. 1337
