As more businesses open up, along with schools and colleges, there are still some hurdles many people need to get over when it comes to fears associated with COVID-19.Fox 17 spoke with Psychologist Dr. Lyndsay Volpe-Bertram from Spectrum Health about these fears."I don't think six or seven months ago any of us thought we'd be still in this current state," Dr. Volpe-Bertram explained, adding that the differences in the way people are handling the precautions is adding another layer of stress. "I think that range of reaction and behavior is also contributing to our overall stress because everybody is kind of taking a different approach to it."To address a balance, Dr. Volpe-Bertram recommends what's called "Ongoing Calculated Risk Assessment", similar to what many call risk vs. reward."We are looking at it as, 'Is this worth it to me?' Is what I'm going to get as a benefit back from having this experience or putting myself out there in some way, is that worth the possible exposure?", asked Dr. Volpe-Bertram.Essentially she recommends we be efficient and choosy in everything we do, even in socializing or explaining."Rather than saying, 'We have to say yes to everything'. Help us identify what are the most important events for us to be attending? Who are the most important people that we want to spend our time with?"Dr. Volpe-Bertram reminds, as the weather turns and flu season fast approaches, not to stress about it, but instead prepare for more mental well-being."It's important for us to start thinking about what our coping strategies are going to be in the Winter and how are we going to keep ourselves busy. Because we don't want people to stay holed-up in their houses, fearful of going out to places. As the number of COVID-19 cases rapidly increases, you might feel more apprehensive about eating out now.So WFTS took your questions straight to a former health inspector, who believes certain food safety protocols should be followed when you're dining out."I think everyone should be wearing a mask if they're in public," said Danielle Egger, who started her own restaurant consultation company called Florida Food Safety Systems, after being a health inspector for many years.She says since restaurant inspections are public, you should look up past inspections here to see how the restaurant performed before the pandemic hit."If the restaurant has had concerns about sanitation in the past before COVID started, it might be a good idea to consider going elsewhere. And if sanitation issues, handwashing, and cleanliness were an issue before this ever started, chances are they're struggling to get up to compliance now," she explained.When you walk into a restaurant, Egger says employees should be constantly cleaning, especially highly-touched areas."I have been advising them to set timers so that every 30 minutes, they're wiping down high touched areas. That's going to be any of the door handles, any of the points of sale systems that they're using to complete transactions," she said.And that includes stylists, pens, and even credit card machines because the virus can live on surfaces."There are some studies that say that COVID-19 is possibly able to survive on a surface like plastic for about three days so it's definitely possible," Egger said.But can the virus live on food?"It appears as though coronavirus and COVID is actually heat sensitive, which means that most of the time, those temperatures we're cooking those food items too is able to cook off any kind of the virus," she explained.And you may have heard that eating outside is safer than inside. So why is that?"I believe there were three reported cases of people consuming food in restaurants in an enclosed area and they actually did find the virus in the air conditioning system," she said.And masks are a must right now."Anybody that's facing our customers should be wearing masks, that includes general managers. That includes anybody who's out on the floor, interacting with customers or employees," she said.And the biggest mistake people make when wearing a mask? They don't cover their nose."You're still running the risk of inhaling that potentially contaminated air. So we have to keep everything covered," she explained.Egger also recommends restaurants display on their door what they're doing to keep you safe and what they expect of their customers.That may include things like 'masks required', 'please social distance' or 'think about take-out if you're not feeling well.'''Egger says disposable menus are the safest but if a restaurant hands you a reusable menu, they should be sanitizing that menu between each customer.WFTS' Wendy Ryan first reported this story. 2971

As we near the end of October, Thanksgiving is less than a month away and Hanukkah and Christmas are both in less than two months. A lot of hotels are taking note, and Paula Twidale with AAA says some are offering deep discounts."You’re seeing this like perhaps 15, 20, 25 percent off hotels in certain regions to entice people to make that commitment. Also, flexible terms and conditions," said Twidale, AAA's senior vice president of travel.She says right now hotels are at about a 50 percent capacity, and some companies are finding ways to keep people traveling."We’ve never had nearly as busy a fall travel season as we have right now. Not even close. We’ve been basically sold out in every mountain town in the US since August," said Brent Handler, founder and CEO of Inspirato. "It works like Rent the Runway or how the original Netflix subscription worked, where as soon as you check out, you can book your next trip. So, you can have one reservation at a time."Through Inspirato Pass, travelers have access to hundreds of destinations around the world with no nightly rates, fees, or other fares."Families will take one of our houses in Cabo for a month or families will move to Aspen for two months," said Handler.But not everyone is ready to travel just yet. Handler says about half of Inspirato's clients aren’t traveling at all."The other half is saying, ‘I’m traveling more than I normally would. I have this opportunity; it might be once in a lifetime working from home. I normally go into an office. I’m going to travel 10 times in the next four or five months,’" said Handler"It’s going to work for some, not for everybody. It may entice people. They’re going to work remote; they may as well do it from a nice location," said Twidale.As for those holiday trips, Twidale says about two-thirds of Americans will travel by the end of this year."It’s not a matter of if people will travel, it’s a matter of when. BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Two Camp Pendleton Marines are being credited with rescuing a family in Bakersfield Tuesday afternoon.According to KGET, Marines Andrew Lucas and Dustin reed, who are both Bakersfield natives, saw a woman who needed help rescuing her sister from the Kern River at Hart Park.The two rushed over to help when they realized the woman was hanging onto a tree branch, struggling to get out of the water. Her sister was trying to pull her from the river.KGET reports that her sister’s ex-boyfriend was also stuck trying to hold her from being swept away by the current.When rescue crews arrived on scene, Lucas and Reed had already brought the family to safety. 686
At least 200 people were injured in a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck near the border with Iraq, Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency reported.Sunday's quake in the western part of the country was about 6 miles deep, the US Geological Survey said.Buildings were damaged in various rural areas in SarPol-e zahab and Qasr-e-Shirin, causing walls of some homes to fall, says Fars.Tremors could be felt as far away as Baghdad.
