Hurricane Dorian -- the strongest storm anywhere on the planet this year -- is leaving "catastrophic damage" in its wake as it makes its way across the Bahamas, where it's claimed at least one life.The monster Category 5 storm made landfall on the eastern end of Grand Bahama Island Sunday night and will continue to pound the island for most of Monday as it creeps toward the southeastern US coast.The death of an 8-year-old boy is being reported by Bahamas news outlets Eyewitness News and Bahamas Press.The boy's grandmother, Ingrid McIntosh, told Eyewitness News that her grandson died on Abaco Island. She said her 31-year-old daughter found the body of her son, who she believed drowned in the rising waters. McIntosh said her granddaughter is also missing."I just saw my grandson about two days ago," she said. "He told me he loved me. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla — The state of Florida ruled Wednesday that a young boy stricken with cancer must continue to receive chemotherapy treatment against his parents' wishes.The judge ruled that the state will take custody of 3-year-old Noah McAdams so he can finish the remaining 13 of 28 days of scheduled chemotherapy treatments. She also ruled that the family can use additional treatments — including medical marijuana — to help ease his symptoms of the chemo treatments.At the end of Noah's cancer treatments, the state will determine whether the boy still has cancer. Following that time, the family will have an opportunity to switch Noah's care to a different doctor.The judge's ruling comes after the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office told media outlets on Monday that Noah's parents, Taylor Bland-Ball and Joshua McAdams failed to bring the boy to a medically-necessary hospital procedure and refused to follow up with lifesaving medical care. They did not provide specifics, but sent out an alert that labeled Noah as "missing and endangered." The family was found late Monday afternoon in Kentucky."We just want him to be healthy, happy and with his family that’s going to give him the absolute best care,” Bland-Ball said. “They made it seem like we were trying to run away, like we were trying to seek no treatment whatsoever and that’s completely not the case."The parents says their son is suffering from leukemia. They claim Noah is in remission and doing well, but did not provide proof to support their claim. They say they were taking him to Kentucky for a second opinion."We were not trying to run from the case, there was nothing that we were trying to hide. We’re just trying to seek the best opinion for our son,” Bland-Ball said. “We basically just feel like this is our parent rights being stomped all over.”But doctors who treat cancer like this say just because the leukemia isn't showing up, doesn't mean he's cured.“We have no way of saying that he is cured of leukemia this early in therapy,” said Dr. Bijal Shah, the clinical leader for the Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia program at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.He says a leukemia diagnosis can be devastating, which is why he says it’s important to not victimize the family."To navigate this two-and-a-half year journey is extraordinarily intensive an extraordinarily stressful,” he said. “You can imagine having to do blood draws, bone marrow biopsy‘s and all of these things for your three-year-old child."He says there are some promising new therapies being developed such as immunotherapy, antibody directed drugs that deliver drugs directly to tumor cells, and Car T-Cell therapy. But he says those don’t have the same cure rate as chemotherapy."We’re not at a point now where I think we can apply these outside the context of a clinical trial if we’re talking about a newly diagnosed patient with aggressive leukemia,” he said.Last week, a judge gave Bland-Ball’s parents the right to shelter him temporarily until the court could reach a decision. The state will maintain custody of Noah, and he will likely get his next chemo treatment tomorrow.Bland-Ball says last week was a whirlwind that ended when a judge gave them the opportunity to seek a second medical opinion on treatment options for their son.They say they found a doctor in Oldsmar, Florida but he couldn’t make it in for testimony until Friday. HOUSTON, Texas -- Only 536 people in the world know what it is like to be blasted from Earth and launched into space. NASA astronaut Stan Love is one of them. Love went into space for the first time in 2008, with NASA’s STS-122 mission. “It was an amazing experience,” said Love, “[of] driving out to the launch pad, strapping into the gigantic steaming hissing spaceship and having the countdown and then all the shaking and thrust of launch coming up into space and the engine shuts off and you are floating weightlessness.” Love grew up in Oregon and as a kid, with mountains all around him, he enjoyed exploring wonders on the Earth. At night though, he’d look to the sky and wondered about exploring space. So, getting there in 2009 was a dream come true, but it also inspired a bigger dream. He wanted to help more people get to space. “I look forward to a world where more people can have the experience of flying in space, and maybe a little more time to enjoy looking out the window and seeing the Earth, seeing the start,” said Love. For the past decade, he has focused on making space exploration possible for more people. “I’m working on the cockpit displays and controls and controls sticks the computer displays and the switches on the Orion spacecraft which is going to fly Artemis missions, “ Love added. The Artemis mission, expected to launch next year, will mark a big moment in space history: a moment where NASA plans on handing over travel to Earth’s lower orbit to the commercial industry. “We are to the point where American industry, not just American government, can handle that,” Love said. “There are a bunch of companies that want to start flying tourists on little suborbital hops.” Those suborbital hops are around 0,000, but as a lower-Earth orbit economy develops, those prices are expected to reduce drastically. In addition, allowing industry to focus on lower Earth’s orbit will allow NASA to focus on Artemis’ true goal of getting back to the moon, and preparing it for a possible long-term human presence. “That’s sort of the next logical step,” Love explains. “We think that in deep craters of the moon’s south pole, there is a lot of water ice and other materials that we can use to help start building a lunar economy based on the moon.”The possibilities from there are truly endless. NASA launches phase one of Artemis in 2020. By 2024, it expects to have astronauts actually heading back to the moon. 2464
