SHANGHAI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Friday called on the Chinese people to pool their strength and resources to make sure the Shanghai World Expo a success. With just 106 days to go before the Expo opening on May 1, Hu visited the Expo site Friday during an inspection tour in Shanghai. "Hosting the World Expo is not only a significant event of Shanghai, but also of the whole nation," he said, noting it was both the responsibility of Shanghai and the whole country to hold a successful Expo. Hu put forward six requirements on the Expo's preparatory work: - To ensure the Expo site's infrastructure building and exhibition arrangements be completed on time; - To ensure sound service and logistics; - Security should be fully guaranteed; - Foreign affairs work, including receptions of international guests, must be well handled; - To ensure efficient and effective publicity work; - To create a civilized, happy and peaceful atmosphere. Hu said though the Expo was a big challenge, he believed it would be a "successful, brilliant and memorable" event with the support of the Chinese people, especially the contributions of Shanghai officials and residents. The Shanghai World Expo, which is expected to receive 70 million visitors, will last from May 1 to Oct. 31. So far, 35 of the 42 self-built foreign pavilions have started interior decoration and exhibition arrangement, and 11 joint pavilions have been completed.
SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior Syrian official underlined on Sunday the importance of cooperation with China, especially in the fields of agriculture and food security.Talking to Xinhua on the sidelines of a joint Afro-Arab ministerial meeting, Nabi Rasheed, an aide to the Syrian minister of agriculture, said his country pays much attention to cooperation with China on agriculture and food security and looks forward to more joint projects in this regard."Syria and China cooperate with each other in the long term through the exchange of delegations and training programs. A high- level Chinese delegation led by the agriculture minister has visited us recently, when we discussed opportunities and means to boost agricultural cooperation. Syria will also take part in the 2010 Shanghai EXPO," the Syrian official said.Rasheed who headed his country's delegation to the Joint Afro- Arab Ministerial Meeting on Agricultural Development and Food Security which kicked off on Sunday in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, said the current meeting has attached greater importance due to the drought which haunts many Arab and African countries and the global financial crisis.The recent food crisis caused the prices of many food stuff to ratchet up and the global financial crisis forced many countries to cut funds allocated to agricultural development, said the official."I hope the meeting will lay a concrete foundation stone for cooperation between Arab and African states at this vital stage," he said.The Syrian official added that the meetings aim to establish a common Arab-African strategy on agriculture and food security, pointing out that there is a plan to set up a follow-up, steering and coordination body along with a special fund to support the implementation of decisions to be sanctioned by the ministers.Rasheed added that his country has already taken tangible steps on food security, "Syria has successfully made food security years ago thanks to governmental policies and its support for the agricultural sector.""We have achieved this goal," he said, yet adding his country still faces challenges due to the recent drought which is the worst in 50 years.

BEIJING, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's operational high-speed railways have exceeded 3,300 kilometers, leading the world in both length and technologies, the Ministry of Railways said on its official website Thursday.Last year China finished two high-speed railways between Wuhan-Guangzhou and Zhengzhou-Xi'an, with an operating speed of 350 km/h. Before that, China had built high-speed railways between some of its major cities, including Beijing-Tianjin, Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan, Qingdao-Jinan, Hefei-Wuhan and Hefei-Nanjing.A number of new high-speed railways are being built and will be finished in the coming few years, of which the Beijing-Shanghai line has a length of 1,318 km and a designed travel speed of 350 km/h. Construction of the line started in April 2008 and would finish in around five years.
