SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two people were found dead Sunday morning after authorities responded to multiple 911 calls of a capsized boat off the coast of Ocean Beach.Authorities received a call about the incident around 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, authorities found a 28-foot vessel overturned along the shore with two mean deceased nearby."About a 28 foot vessel overturned in the shore, on the sand," says SD Fire & Rescue Lt. Maureen Hodges. "We do have two victims that were down on the sand."The incident happened shortly after 3:30 Sunday morning. Customs and Border Protection officers told ABC 10News the boat capsized off the shore, throwing the two people into the water. There's still no word on if any other people were in the boat.Border Patrol also responded to the incident along with San Diego Police, lifeguards, and San Diego Fire-Rescue. CBP believes this is the latest incident to involve a human-smuggling effort gone horribly wrong.So far in the 2020 Fiscal Year, there have been 210 incidents involving these kind of "panga" boats off the coast of San Diego. The record was set in 2013, when CBP responded to 243 such incidents. With two months left in the fiscal year, 2020 is on pace to break the record.ABC 10News asked if the rise in panga boat incidents could be related to border closures because of the coronavirus, forcing would-be smugglers to turn to the water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While enjoying a moment at the park over the weekend, a Carlsbad family was on the receiving end of an act of kindness from a stranger. The family says they are now hoping to find that person to say thank you.After months of staying at home, the family was excited to spend a day at Buccaneer Park in Oceanside. Eleven-year-old Jacobi and 12-year-old Jordan couldn’t wait to get outside.“They’re too old of the playground area, the swings and things like that,” says mom Tamara Coronado. “They look forward to the open space, the grass area, and definitely the basketball courts.”But Coronado says park officials had not yet reinstalled the basketball hoops, something the boys were looking forward to. The kids were left to make up their own games. It caught the attention of one man.“Forty-five minutes to an hour later, he came back… with a crafting reef from Dollar Tree and a very small basketball that would fit inside.”The man used a power drill to attach the wreath to a tree to form a makeshift hoop so that the boys could play basketball.“All that he asked was that we leave the wreath and the ball in place so that after we left, other families could use it,” says Coronado. “But the fact that he went out of his way like he did was, I just couldn’t believe it.”The mom says even though a lot is going on around the country, she wants others to know there are still kind people in the world. The family didn’t get the man’s name, but they’re hoping to find him to say thank you.“He may have not thought twice about it, and hasn’t thought about it since, but he really touched me and my family.” 1632

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego began welcoming some students back to campus housing, with a host of COVID-19 safety precautions.As with all things during this pandemic, move-in weekend at UCSD didn’t look quite the same."Kinda nervous, but excited," said freshman Alexis Estrada.Along with the normal nervous excitement, there was the new normal. Each student given a mask and hand sanitizer, along with a coronavirus test - results within 48 hours.The move-in for some 7,500 students - staggered throughout a 10-day span.Residential adviser Summer Thai says the actual moving in is taking longer."Definitely different. More difficult to get more stuff into the room ... in elevators, we practice social distancing. One family unit at a time," said Thai.While a vast majority of classes will be remote learning, any student going to a UCSD location will have to a complete a daily health self-screening. Students living and going to class on campus will be tested twice a month.Freshman Nicole Rodriguez says while the pandemic life is challenging."I can’t really hang out with suitemates. It's kind of isolating ... But these precautions are the right thing to do," said Rodriguez.UCSD officials are hoping to avoid the outbreak situation unfolding at San Diego State University, with more than 700 positive cases. UCSD is going high tech to ease those worries. Ongoing wastewater testing is serving as a warning system.
