SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A program through the County's office of Child Welfare Services is making sure every kid in the foster program gets to celebrate this holiday season. The "Home for the Holidays" program pairs kids in the foster shelters with families for a holiday, so they don't have to spend the holiday alone."This is a great opportunity for families to kind of try it out and see what it's like to work with our youth," says Kimberly Giardina, the Director of Child Welfare Services.Right now, San Diego County has about 140 kids in the foster program that need a foster family. While this program doesn't give them a long-term solution, it helps the kids through a difficult season."People open their homes," says Giardina. "They see that our youth are just like every other kid in the neighborhood."Nanci Weinstein, who has fostered three kids through the county and adopted one, says it's an experience that's invaluable for both the kids and the families."I can't imagine what that might feel like for a child," she says. "Every moment is precious because this child is in a situation where they need someone to take care of them."Families interested in participating in the Home for the Holidays program need to complete a background check, home safety inspection, training and orientation. The process can take several months. While it may be too late for this holiday season, Giardina says people can try any holiday, secular or religious. For more information, go to the county's website here or call 877-792-KIDS (5437). 1540

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local group called the San Diego Rapid Response Network is calling on the community to help asylum-seekers being released throughout San Diego County. On Monday, the group held a press conference explaining how they have been helping the migrants as they are released by ICE, awaiting their asylum hearing. The network is made up of several local churches, the local ACLU, and Casa Cornelia. Volunteers say they have been helping migrants by providing shelter, food, and medical services. They say they've also made travel arrangements to help the migrants get to their final destination. Volunteers tell 10News the migrants are released with no resources and sometimes late at night. The group says they felt the need to help after ICE ended their policy of connecting the migrants with a family member or a sponsor before their release. ICE tells 10News they always plan for releases during the daylight hours but say sometimes things can get delayed since it is a multi-agency effort. They told us of only one instance where the group was released after sundown. The rapid response network is hoping the community will help with monetary donations so they can continue providing their services. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Navy SEAL was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to molesting his relative in California.Gregory Kyle Seerden pled guilty to seven counts of molestation following a preliminary hearing in which the victim testified. According to the court, the abuse happened while Seerden was a Navy SEAL stationed in San Diego. "We can start healing today by making him answer for his crimes every day for the rest of his pathetic existence," Alicia Reppert said, reading a prepared testimony.Reppert is Seerden's ex-wife. She said on the stand, that her daughter endured abuse from her father, starting from when she was five years old. The Deputy District Attorney said the girl mustered up the courage to report her father's crimes in 2015. At the pretrial hearing in May, the now 12-year-old testified in front of a judge. The testimony was so powerful, Seerden pleaded guilty to seven of the nine counts of molestation, without going to trial. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison. Seerden is already serving a 27-year federal sentence for manufacturing child pornography. In 2017, Seerden was accused of of raping a woman while serving in the Navy in Virginia. When authorities searched his cell phone, they found child pornography, including a video of him abusing another 5 year-old relative, while she slept. "In California, you can use that evidence to corroborate molestation in this case," Deputy DA Amy Colby said. Seerden was arrested on April 3, 2017, for the case involving child pornography.
