BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for efforts to intensify energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection to ensure clean, safe and sustainable development.     Li made the comment at a meeting in Beijing on Tuesday, urging efforts on development of green industry and sustainable economy.     He said environmental protection should be strengthened as the environmental problems in China are still severe, such as the water, air and soil pollution.     Li said China's economy is still at a critical moment as it begins to recover steadily. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) held a reception in Beijing Monday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. Addressing the event, Chen Haosu, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), a major non-governmental organization, said, "The friendship between the two countries had endured the test of time and changes in the world." A reception is held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 28, 2009    The traditional friendship built and nurtured by leaders of former generations of both countries had been consolidated and pushed forward over the 60 years, he said.     This year also marks the Year of China-DPRK Friendship, a year-long exchange program, which injected new vitality to the friendship, he said. BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese ambassador to Brazil Chen Duqing said Saturday China may play a significant role in Riode Janeiro's preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.     "Compared with the other applicants, currently Rio de Janeiro still has a lot to do to improve its sports facilities and other infrastructure, which indicates a special opportunity for Chinese companies," Chen told Xinhua Saturday in an exclusive interview.     The costs of preparing for the event in 2016 are estimated at roughly 12 billion U.S. dollars. However, the event is expected to generate 250 billion.     Zhou Zhiwei, an expert in Brazil studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that for Rio de Janeiro, traffic and infrastructure are the city's weak points.     Beating rivals Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid, Rio de Janeiro won the right to host the world's largest stage of sporting events after three failed attempts.     Rio de Janeiro's win also marks the first time that an Olympic Games will be held in South America.     Chen said as big third world countries, both China and Brazil have cooperated closely in applying for host cities, making preparations and organizing the Games in the past few years.     In 2007, China's General Administration of Sports sent teams to Brazil to draw experiences from the Pan American Games. During last year's Beijing Olympics, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Rio de Janeiro bid team came to China to watch the games.     Besides the Games, Rio de Janeiro, along with another seven cities, was also expected to host the 2014 World Cup, which required large investments in infrastructures in terms of sports facilities, transportation and reception, Chen said.     "Just like their Beijing friends, I believe people in Rio de Janeiro will also enjoy rich benefits brought along by the Olympic Games," he added.

PYONGYANG, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on Monday attended a grand celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations and the closing ceremony of the China-DPRK Friendship Year.     In a speech delivered at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, Premier Wen said China and the DPRK have understood, supported and helped each other during the past 60 years despite changes in the international situation.     The ruling parties and peoples of China and the DPRK have steadily promoted the development of the bilateral ties, contributing to regional peace and stability, Wen said.     This year marks the China-DPRK Friendship Year, featuring a variety of celebrations and events of exchanges, which have enhanced the friendship between the two countries, strengthened cooperation in various fields and injected new vitality into the bilateral ties, Wen said.     Currently, China-DPRK relations have arrived at a new historic point, he said.     China is ready to join hands with the DPRK to further consolidate and develop the traditional friendship, expand friendly exchanges and cooperation to better serve the well-being of both peoples, and make greater contribution to regional peace and stability, he noted.     DPRK Premier Kim Yong Il, who also attended the event, said the establishment of DPRK-China relations 60 years ago was an epoch-making event and the DPRK is firmly determined to consolidate and develop the DPRK-China friendship.     The events marking the China-DPRK Friendship Year have effectively promoted the friendship and trust between the two peoples, he said.     The DPRK is ready to make joint efforts with China to further the friendly, cooperative relations, he said.     During the celebration, the leaders watched the grand gymnastic and artistic performance "Arirang" presented by DPRK artists.  

BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to advance cooperation with Turkey in combating terrorism to better fulfill the common task of safeguarding national unification and territorial integrity and opposing separatism, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Sunday.     Yang made the remarks when meeting in Beijing with Turkish State Minister Zafer Caglayan, who paid the visit to China as special envoy of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The visit "indicated Turkey's political will to further its relationship with China," Yang said during the one-hour meeting, adding China attached great importance to promoting the ties with Turkey.     China was ready to strengthen the bilateral relations on the basis of universally recognized norms of international relations, he said. It had a profound political background.     The riot, taking place on July 5 in capital of the northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,600 others injured.     Yang said the "East Turkestan" separatist forces' nature and harm was disclosed in the riot as it seriously jeopardized the lives, property of the Chinese people of various ethnic groups, and the local stability.     The measures taken by the Chinese government to deal with the incident according to law won wholehearted support of the local people of all ethnic groups, Yang said.     Caglayan reiterated Turkey's adherence to the one-China policy and its respect for China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.     The two peoples had a long history of friendship, and the two countries enjoyed "sound cooperation" in areas such as fighting terrorism, Caglayan said, adding Turkey would like to keep close contact with China in this area.     "Turkey will endeavor to develop a strong relationship with China, through deepening bilateral cooperation," he said.     Caglayan, who arrived in Beijing Saturday, also said the success of Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to China in June had exerted profound influence on the bilateral relations.     During his four-day stay in China, Caglayan was also scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and visit Xinjiang, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry.
