They struck between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. about 14.3 miles east-southeast of Ocotillo Wells in San Diego County.The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.5-magnitude quake struck the region at 5:34 p.m. A 3.4-magnitude quake struck only a few minutes prior.Two aftershocks followed suit. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A major turning point for the town of Oceanside was the creation of Camp Pendleton."It was just a village, Oceanside was just a village and all of a sudden you have all these workers coming into Oceanside for a place to sleep, a place to eat," said Faye Jonason, History and Museum Director at Camp Pendleton since 1996.According to the Oceanside Historical Society, the town's population more than doubled in five years. Restaurants, schools, and hotels were bursting at the seams. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor spurred the U.S. Navy to purchase the 132,000 acres of Rancho Santa Margarita y las Flores Mexican land grant. The base was only supposed to be temporary, but the process of turning the quiet Rancho into the world's largest Marine Corps Base had begun. "I think they found it was such good training area, they weren't about to let go," said Jonason. (KGTV) -- Five Oceanside lifeguards will receive the Medal of Valor for saving a man buried in rocks on the Del Mar Jetty last October.On October 7, 2017, the lifeguards received a call about someone stranded after his vessel capsized due to a wave.When lifeguards arrived, they found the watercraft upside down on the rocks but were unable to locate the man.After more lifeguards were called to the scene, they found the operator of the vessel buried in the rocks.Lifeguards worked quickly to free the man due to the impact of the relentless surf. More rescue units from the Oceanside Fire Department and Oceanside Police Department were called to the scene and eventually freed the man.The victim was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. 812

OCEAN BEACH (KGTV) - A hooded thief appears to have struck again in Ocean Beach. Marguerite Cruz, who is a co-owner of Te Mana Cafe, said someone broke into her restaurant early morning on Valentine’s Day. “I just felt really attacked,” she said with tears in her eyes.She said the burglary was caught on multiple surveillance cameras. The video shows the person crawling in through a window, then using some sort of took to dislodge the cash drawer from the register. A couple weeks ago, less than two blocks away, a criminal was caught on camera breaking into Pat’s Liquor and stealing the entire cash register. Police have not said if they think it is the same criminal, but Cruz seemed certain. “I think this person’s on a roll,” she said.  777

(KGTV) - Smoke from wildfires had many California residents staying indoors Sunday but the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders game carried on at the Oakland Coliseum. The Air Quality Index for much of San Francisco and the surrounding areas was in the Environmental Protection Agency’s “red” zone, indicating the air was unhealthy to breathe.Fans and coaches donned masks while players were forced to inhale the smoke on the field.
