BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- There have been no reports of an epidemic outbreak or public health incident in the northwestern Zhouqu County that was hit by a massive mudslide Sunday, a health official said Wednesday.Zhang Guoxin, vice director of the emergency office of the Health Ministry, made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing.Emergency medical rescue work was coming to an end and now epidemic prevention was the priority for health authorities, Zhang said.At least 702 people were killed and 1,042 others are missing after Sunday's mudslide.A total of 422 injured have been treated as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. All those who were seriously hurt have been sent to hospitals in the cities of Lanzhou and Tianshui, Zhang said.A survivor who was rescued 60 hours after the mudslide has been transferred to the Gansu Provincial People's Hospital and was currently in stable condition."All the injured have been properly treated," Zhang said.Forty-seven civilian and military medical teams with 779 members are working in Zhouqu, nine of whom are extremely well qualified and rank among the best in the country.A total area of 310,000 square meters has been sterilized by the teams.Health authorities have prepared 50,000 pamphlets on health risks for local residents.Zhang said health authorities were attempting to rebuild hospitals and clinics in Zhouqu as quickly as possible.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Since the first Group of 20 (G20) Summit in November 2008, the attention China has been getting has shifted from that of a turn-round-to, to that of a look-up-to, analysts said. Two years ago, almost all developed economies turned round to look at what actions China took to cope with the financial crisis. Now in the midst of a uneven global recovery, China has become one being looked up to by developing and developed economies for its leading if not exemplary roles. As the curtain is about to rise at the upcoming fourth G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, China and the crucial roles she is playing once again draws the world's attention.A STEADY STABILIZER IN GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTPrior to the first G20 summit, China has since been managing to sustain a rather fast growth rate while taking an active part in orchestrating with other economies, developed and developing alike, to push for a global recovery through reformed and renewed financial and economic mechanisms.Despite the fact it is still a developing country itself, China alone has contributed toward half of the global GNP growth in the time of crises.Amidst downslides of the United States, eurozone and Japan, China not only curbed the domino ripple in the country with a bolder-than-predicted stimulus package but also succeeded in effecting a lead in the recovery. It is its early lead off the blocks that is now being more than looked at by others.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, soon to host the fourth G20 Summit, has described what China has done as a contribution to the global recovery and a great assistance to the international community in its crisis management.Takashi Sekiyama, a senior researcher from Japan's Meiji University and with the Tokyo Consortium, has rated China's contribution to the global economic development during this hard period as the "biggest."

XI'AN, July 17 (Xinhua) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel continued Saturday her visit in Xi'an, capital of China' s northwestern Shaanxi Province.During the visit, Merkel and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with heads of prestigious German and Chinese firms, and visited China-German joint venture Siemens Signaling Company Ltd.Merkel also held a meeting with the acting Governor of the Shaanxi Province Zhao Zhengyong.Zhao said the Sino-German cooperation taking place in Shaanxi had enjoyed great achievements during recent years, as there had been about 60 Sino-German joint ventures operating in the province.Merkel said more and more German businessman were looking forward to getting involved in China's "West Development" campaign, and she believed the bilateral cooperation will be pushed forward in the future. The acting governor gave Merkel a horse sculpture as a birthday gift, for Merkel's 56th birthday falls on this Saturday.Merkel was born in the year of the horse, according to the Chinese traditional calendar.During her stay in Xi'an, Angela Merkel also visited a cultural theme park, and the renowned Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses in the mausoleum of Qinshihuang, the first emperor of an united China.Merkel will leave Xi'an on Sunday Morning and wrap up her four-day official visit to China.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview. He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. China has diplomatic relations with nearly all African countries.
