SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego could be closing as part of an effort to integrate women into the Marines.MCRD has been in San Diego for about 100 years, but it currently does not have facilities specifically for female Marines.According to a Military.com report, Marine Corps officials are looking at other options in order to meet the integration mandate from Congress.One proposal would create a single boot camp that would include the necessary facilities, rather than the current process of dividing recruits between MCRD in San Diego and the boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina.In response to a possible closure, the San Diego Military Advisory Council said losing the area boot camp would cost the city.SDMAC Executive Director Mark Balmert said, “So 400 recruits a week come through our location here, about 16,000-17,000 a year. Our studies have shown more than 60,000 of their family members make the trip to San Diego to be a part of their recruit graduation.”Marine officials have already told the Pentagon it cannot add women to boot camps without building new facilities. 1139

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city is running behind on a project to restore an iconic bridge that borders Hillcrest and North Park.Now, people in the area are growing frustrated at the construction on the Georgia St. bridge that's causing traffic delays and drivers to use surrounding neighborhoods as shortcuts."Traffic is very very bad because of te bridge, and I have to go around to buy stuff for my shop, and it's taking me longer to get where I want to go," said Milan Misic, who lives in the area and owns the Balboa Perk coffee and antique shop. The city is restoring the 103-year-old bridge so it can withstand an earthquake. The city broke ground on the million project in July 2016, saying it would take a year. But now it won't be finished until next spring.A city spokesman says the delays are because of weather, and unanticipated cobbles and deposits crews discovered in the bridge walls, making drilling more difficult.He added that there is no threat to public safety and it will not raise the cost.You can track the project on the city's website.   1092

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The eight-legged population is overrunning parts of Balboa Park a bit earlier than usual this year.Spider season is in full bloom in San Diego. From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The man suspected of killing his stepmother and burying her body in a Tijuana backyard has been arrested on probation violations.Aaron Seth Juarez, 20, was taken into custody in San Diego Thursday. He was also wanted by the Deputy Attorney General of Justice in Tijuana on suspicion of killing Fernanda González Serrano in February.San Diego Police are currently working to return Juarez back to Mexico.González was last heard from on Feb. 2. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The National Parks Service will survey San Diego's Chicano Park and its murals as part of efforts to add the land to the national list.The reconnaissance survey is expected to be completed next year and will evaluate the significance of the park and its artwork.The NPS announcement comes after Rep. Juan Vargas introduced a bill in 2019, The Chicano Park Preservation Act, that would require the Department of Interior to conduct a study of the park's merits for national affiliation.RELATED: Bill pushes to add San Diego's Chicano Park to National Park SystemVargas said in a release Wednesday that the NPS is willing to conduct the study without passing a bill requiring the department to do so."I’m very pleased to learn that the National Park Service will begin their preliminary assessment of Chicano Park early next year. The National Park Service affiliation will help protect the park’s longevity and legacy," said Vargas.Being affiliated with the NPS would allow the park to be eligible for technical or financial aid.
