San Diego (KGTV)- After spending nearly months in the ICU, a local healthcare worker, who tested positive for COVID-19, is sharing his story."At that time, I thought for certain I was going to die."Ezequiel Melendez Jr., also known as Zeke, spent 57 days in the hospital after contracting COVID-19.The Respiratory Care Technician says he's always been an active and healthy person. He did not have any underlying medical conditions. His struggle with coronavirus started in early March with flu-like symptoms."I didn't meet the criteria at the time for COVID testing," says Melendez. "You were supposed temperature of 102; mine was 100. They told me don't go back to work until 24 hours with no symptoms."Melendez says seven days later, his symptoms got worse."Next thing I know, I'm laying on a gurney preparing for intubation with an endotracheal tube."Melendez's girlfriend, Grace Carbajal, who is also a healthcare worker, says it was a challenge seeing him sick."Being a nurse and not being able to be there at the bedside, also being a loved one and not being able to be there for him and with him, was very difficult," says Carbajal.After spending weeks in the hospital, Melendez was released in late May. He says it will be a while until he feels like himself again. He is still under doctors' care and has physical therapy weekly.He also has a message for everyone as the pandemic continues."We need protection and everyone doing their part to wear masks," says Melendez. "I was one who thought it was just something like the flu, maybe exaggerated at the time. But when it happened to me, it was a smack to the face."Melendez says he would like to thank everyone for the support and those who donated to the GoFund Me that was created while he was in the hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With just weeks to go before the first day of school, parents across California are trying to figure out the best way to ensure their kids get a quality education.For some families, that means pulling their kids from a traditional district school."We're going to be homeschooling them," said parent Sarah Farsian.The Farsians have two kids, a first- and second-grader."In the pandemic, we are really afraid of sending them back to a campus," Farsian said. "Even though they're disinfected, what if they get sick."Her family is not the only one across the state making the same decision. Along with setting up their home school, some families are looking into micro-schooling or a small school. It could have regular classroom space or operate out of someone's home, using remote curriculums."First, it's going to be just us, but we are a member of a Facebook co-op group that also has accredited tutors, accredited teachers all different grades," Farsian said.Parents' decisions on where and how to educate their children could have impacts on the schools they leave."The overwhelming majority of the money to the overwhelming majority of districts from the LCFF, Local Control Funding Formula, which comes from the state, the dollars come from the state and go to the school districts based on the number of students they've got and also the distribution, the demographics of those students," said Bob Blattner with Blattner and Associates, an education lobbying and consulting firm.In a May revision to the governor's budget, the Local Control Funding Formula took a significant hit. The proposal states, "Absent additional federal funds, the COVID-19 Recession requires a 10 percent (.5 billion) reduction to LCFF."Lawmakers pushed back and passed a budget that kept school funding at current levels. Schools will get the same amount of state funding as they did this past school year. However, billions of dollars will be deferred, and schools won't be able to get it until the next school year."If we don't get federal dollars, the final budget deal starts borrowing from the next year," Blattner said."Districts are either going to have to go into their savings, and many have enough, or they're going to have to borrow. If they can't do either, the budget does have a provision giving support for districts that can't access the borrowing tools they need."Deferrals will impact districts and public charter schools a bit differently."Everybody is going to be subject to deferrals, and what that means basically is you will be reimbursed at a later date," said Myrna Castrejón, president and CEO of the California Charter Schools Association.Castrejón said in the last recession when they saw a lot of deferrals impacting the charter school sector, many of their school networks had to file for bankruptcy or borrow at commercial interest rates."Charter schools can't levy taxes, they can't pass bonds," Castrejón said."It's creating a particularly precarious perfect storm of fiscal challenge for charter schools when you can't get reimbursed for the students that are coming. You have limited access to borrowing capital to withstand the impact of deferrals," she said.Castrejón said there is a concern for some school entities when it comes to average daily attendance.The budget made it so growing schools and schools that have seen enrollment drop still get funded at the same level."Which means that for our charter schools that are growing and for district schools also that are experiencing enrollment growth, which is about 30 percent of districts across California, we're not going to be reimbursed for those students that we're serving," she explained.Castrejón said the governor did ask lawmakers to pursue solutions to fix the issue.As for Sarah Farsian, she said her kids will go back to a physical school location when they think it's safe."This is only for right now," she said. "If they can get this under control, yes (they will go back). They need to be with their friends." 4029
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Veterans looking for a job during the Coronavirus Pandemic are learning to use virtual job fairs to grow their careers."It's sometimes difficult, but overall it's been a positive experience," says Army Veteran Steven Padilla, who has been looking for a job since March."You can only do so much interacting. You can't shake hands. You can't wait in line for a conversation."Padilla says his job search has been more difficult since the Pandemic hit. Companies have stopped hiring or removed job postings.He's not alone in looking for a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Veteran Unemployment skyrocketed during the Pandemic, peaking at 11.8% in April. That means more people competing for fewer positions.But RecruitMilitary.com, the Army's primary contractor for helping service members transition from the Army to civilian employment, says there are still plenty of jobs. They're hosting multiple virtual job fairs every week to help veterans find one."It's really just a way to dip your toes in the water and visiting a lot of companies," says Chris Stevens, the Vice President of RecruitMilitary.com.He says the company has gone from holding about 15 virtual job fairs each year to more than 130 planned for 2020."It's just like any other typical chat room," Stevens says. "Candidates and companies can go into private chats. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wells Fargo Bank officials are offering a ,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for robbing three San Diego-area banks.The string of robberies started September 11 at the Wells Fargo Bank, located at 5522 Balboa Avenue in Clairemont, followed by a second theft October 6 at the branch located at 276 N. El Camino Real in Encinitas.In a release, FBI and the San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force officials said they believe that the same individual, described as a white male in his 50s-60s, is responsible for both robberies."In each robbery, the robber approached the teller and presented a note demanding money from the bank in a similar manner," said FBI special agent Davene Butler.Images from those robberies show the suspect wearing a hat and sunglasses. Each time, the robber was provided a sum of cash and departed the bank on foot, Butler said. 946
