SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two teens are dead after a car reportedly struck a freeway guardrail in Mission Valley, before flipping over into an embankment and bursting into flames.Witnesses told CHP they saw a car speeding on the ramp from westbound Interstate 8 to southbound State Route 163 just after 3 a.m. Saturday. The car hit a guardrail and flipped over the edge of the freeway and fell down onto an embankment below, CHP says.By the time authorities arrived on scene, the vehicle was on fire.Three of the four occupants, including the driver, were pulled from the wreckage and taken to a nearby hospital. Officers tried to pull the fourth person from the vehicle, but say flames overtook the car.After the Medical Examiner arrived to help retrieve the fourth person, they said a second body was found in the charred wreck. It was unclear it the fifth occupant was killed in the crash or fire.The two victims were described as being 15 years old.CHP said they suspect drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Because of that, the driver could be charged with manslaughter, CHP says.The crash closed the onramps from southbound SR-163 to westbound I-8 and WB I-8 to SB SR-163. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego's Lamont Smith resigned from his position as head men's basketball coach, the school announced in a news release late Wednesday night. "This situation has been difficult for all concerned, and our prayers continue to remain with everyone," the school said in the release.  Last month, Smith was arrested in the Bay Area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A border church and border mosque are calling for a day of unity. A Bi-National Day of Prayer will be held at Friendship Park; a place where families on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border can meet. The group is also releasing a short film to encourage federal leaders to keep Friendship Park open. The film is called “A Prayer Beyond Borders.”“Friendship Park is the only place on the U.S. Mexico border, where families who have been separated by U.S. immigration policy, can come together,” says Dustin Craun with CAIR San Diego. Families “can physically be together.”Worshippers have been holding prayers there every week since 2011. “We can pray together when we can come together. We can break bread together,” says Imam Taha Hassane, with the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers say there have been threats to close Friendship Park, but no action was ever taken. They are hoping their continued presence will show federal leaders they need this space open. “Millions of families in the United States and Mexico have no access to each other at all,” says Craun. “Closing friendship park would close any possibility of them being able to see each other.”First United Methodist Church and the Islamic Center of San Diego are calling for a day of unity for people of all faiths, for the Bi-National Day of Prayer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two San Diego police officers responding to a call for a shoplifter in Ocean Beach ended up buying the suspect clothes and shoes instead of arresting him.It happened on Jan. 6 around 5 a.m. at the location on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. SDPD officers Christian Nimmons and Dominic Collins said employees at the drugstore reported that a homeless man had come in, stolen a sweatshirt and refused to leave.The store declined to press charges but wanted the man out of the store.But knowing it was very cold outside, and seeing the man also didn't have a shirt or socks and shoes, the officers decided to buy them for him."We looked at each other, asked how much the sweatshirt was going to cost, and had the same mutual decision of giving him the sweatshirt," said Collins.Both men told 10News it was simply the right thing to do and part of their job as officers to show compassion for those they come in contact with."I think he was more shocked that cops were doing something for him," Nimmons said. "We couldn't leave him like that. That was really it. It's what we joined to do. To help people."The man, only known to the officers as Daniel, reportedly put on the items and left. 1201
