BRUSSELS, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials and scholars from the European Union (EU) and China held a conference here, urging the two sides to enhance cooperation dedicated to seeking a global solution to the financial crisis. "After the financial crisis hit us, we stood closer, supported each other and worked together for an early recovery of our economy and that of the world. We become tightly bound more than ever before," Chinese ambassador to the EU Song Zhe said in a keynote speech at the conference in the European Parliament on Monday. "We have every reason to cooperate," Song said, adding China and the EU have converging interest and share common responsibility. Sino-EU relations has experienced slight derailing last year, as China postponed a summit with the EU due to French President Nicolas Sarkozy's decision to meet the ** Lama when France held the EU presidency. Relations appeared back on track in the face of the global financial crisis. Early this year, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Europe on a Journey of Confidence. Later during the G20 summit in London early this month, President Hu Jintao met a number of European leaders to consolidate mutual trust. In an effort to build a joint front against the financial and economic crisis, a trade and investment delegation from China last month struck multi-billion-U.S.-dollar deals with European companies to boost trade. Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan is scheduled to visit Brussels next week for high-level economic dialogues with EU counterparts. The 11th China-EU Summit will be held in Prague in mid-May, as the Czech Republic is holding the current EU presidency. The EU is the biggest organization of developed countries and China is the biggest developing country, Song said, adding bilateral relationship takes on greater global and strategic importance. Antonie Quero-Mussot, deputy head of cabinet of EU Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, noted that cooperation between the EU, China and beyond is a necessary condition for a solution to the global financial crisis. "Without the dialogue not only between the EU and China, but also between all the major economies... there will not be a solution to the crisis," he said. His remark was echoed by Mei Zhaorong, former president of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. "We can not solve the problem alone but have to work together," Mei said at the conference. He also downplayed the possibility of a G2 framework, under which the United States and China are expected to have a joint central role of leading the world out of the crisis. "We are not of the opinion that we alone with the U.S. can solve the problem," Mei said, "I do not think Europe like that opinion either." "I think the current form of G20 are far better. We should look at developing countries and emerging economies," he added.

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, on Wednesday discussed bilateral relations and the A/H1N1 flu epidemic during a telephone conversation. Hu recalled that during their meeting at the Group of 20 summit in London in early April, he and Obama agreed to work together to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century. The two leaders also reached extensive consensus on the establishment of the mechanism of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues, joint efforts to tackle the international financial crisis, and enhanced coordination and cooperation on major global and regional issues, Hu said. "Now, both countries are seriously implementing the consensus," the Chinese president said. "China is willing to work with the United States to push for a healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations," he said. Obama, for his part, said the meeting with Hu was important because it outlined the future development of bilateral cooperation and made a good start on the China-U.S. strategic dialogue. The United States appreciated China's efforts to promote bilateral relations, he said. The Chinese president expressed sincere condolences over the A/H1N1 flu epidemic that has hit parts of the United States, and said the Chinese government has started emergency measures to prevent a spread of the disease. "We are willing to keep contact with the World Health Organization, the United States and other parties concerned, and strengthen cooperation to jointly confront this public health challenge," Hu said. BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on Monday asked the border public security force to rely on the people to safeguard national security and social stability in the country's border areas. Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when he met with model individuals and groups of the border public security force. Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also the secretary of the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, meets with model individuals and groups of the border public security force in Beijing, capital of China, on June 8, 2009He asked the force to organize and mobilize people of different ethnic groups to participate in border defense to "form prevention and control network", which incorporated the strengths of both the public and the police. The border public security force should make special efforts in the "prevention of and crackdown on the sabotage activities by separatists, terrorists and extremists forces, illegal border-crossing smuggling, drug and human trafficking," he said. Most of China's border areas are economically under-developed or inhabited by ethnic minority people, said Zhou, who is also the secretary of the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee. The border public security force must innovate and actively serve the local people, get to know their difficulties, timely handle public security cases, and dissolve their disputes, he said. The border public security force, listed as a component of the People's Armed Police Force (PAPF), is an armed law-enforcement body deployed by the state in border and coastal areas and at ports. Since 2007, it has arrested 4,400 illegal border crossers, seized 3,806 kg of drugs, seized smuggled goods worth 620 million yuan (about 90.7 million U.S. dollars), cracked 19,205 criminal cases and handled 60,063 violations of public security, according to a white paper on national defense released earlier this year.
