In this story that is Positively San Diego we meet an east county woman who has used that stitch countless times to spread warmth to those who need it the most."By the way, I'm knitting as you're talking to me," said Spring Valley resident Karen De Vos as our Zoom interview got underway.I responded, "I love it!"As she began to list the many places where knitting comes naturally to her, "When I'm watching TV, when I'm in the car, if I'm in a doctor's office, or if I'm in a movie theatre."De Vos said she learned the craft when she was 9 from her mother. And over the years she's created keepsakes like Christmas stockings for family and friends."Then the Santa Claus on one side," said De Vos, showing off one of her stockings, "And then the reindeer and then the trees and then comes the foot."De Vos enjoyed the creativity, but it took on new meaning in the early '90s when a charity drive asked her to knit hats to help the homeless stay warm."In the last three years we all know homelessness has become a terrific problem," says Devos, so, as the years have gone on since I've been knitting, I sort of felt maybe I was doing a better calling then I had ever done before."For some 30 years now, de Vos has been knitting 60-plus hats a year for those in need, sticking with the same pattern while mixing up the colors. And as she points out, they're very stretchy, so one size fits all. She dons one of the hats to make the point."Some people like to wear the flap all the way down, but I think it looks cuter with the flap up."The former middle school teacher and librarian says it's her way of giving back. Her hats go to Father Joe's Villages and the "Voices of our City Choir," famed for showcasing the singing of San Diego's unsheltered."When you get to be my age there aren't too many active things you can go out and do, you know, for charity purposes. But at least I can sit without any movement or anything and create something that will go for good," De Vos said.And as she has knitted some 2,000 hats and continues to knit through this interview, she mentions, "I even can knit when I'm reading too."Karen De Vos lives with her husband of more than 60-years at a senior living community in Spring Valley. She says he's very supportive. Also, she says her efforts bring out a spirit of generosity in others has she's been gifted quite a bit of yarn from friends and businesses.If you're wondering, each hat takes about 3 hours to knit. 2489

A 13-year-old middle school student from Elkhorn, Nebraska was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of terroristic threats. According to a release, the student made non-specific threats on a national social media gaming website on Wednesday. After he was questioned Wednesday, he made similar non-specific threats again on Thursday on a different social media platform. The student was booked in the Douglas County Youth Center. Because of his age, his name was not released. Elkhorn Public Schools released a statement: "On Wednesday, law enforcement investigated an Elkhorn Valley View Middle School student regarding a nonspecific threat made on a national social media gaming website. Elkhorn Public Schools administration cooperated fully with local law enforcement throughout the investigation.  Elkhorn Public Schools takes all threats seriously, and in this situation, at no time did we feel students were in immediate danger. Parents of the student affected received an email on Wednesday afternoon, informing them of the situation." Captain Wayne Hudson with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said deputies will be patrolling schools more closely in upcoming days given the alleged threats. Hudson says law enforcement agencies across the nation are not taking any potential copycat shooting threats lightly and encourage people to report any suspicious activity. "The whole thing of, if you hear something, say something — we need that information. As we saw in Florida, it seems several kids had information," Hudson said. "They knew this individual had made certain comments and certain threats — especially kids. (KGTV) — White House chief of staff John Kelly will leave his position within the Trump Administration by the end of the year, President Donald Trump told reporters on Saturday afternoon.CNN on Friday reported that Kelly was expected to announce his departure in the coming days."John Kelly will be leaving ... I don't know if I can say retiring, but he's a great guy," Trump told a pool of reporters outside the White House before departing to Pennsylvania for the Army-Navy football game. "John Kelly will be leaving at the end of the year. We will be announcing who will be taking John's place, it might be on an interim basis."Kelly has been part of the president's administration for 17 months, serving as Secretary of Homeland Security before moving into the role of Chief of Staff following the departure of Reince Priebus in July 2017.While no one has been officially announced to succeed Kelly, sources tell ABC News that Nick Ayers, who currently serves as Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, is the leading candidate to take over.Kelly's departure has been long-rumored in Washington, even while he had recently accepted Trump's invitation to stay on in the position through his 2020 re-election campaign, ABC News reports. 1250
