SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego professor is one of 55 people to make up California’s Electoral College for the 2020 election. Peter Bolland is the Chair of the Philosophy and Humanities Department at Southwestern College. He’s been at the school for 30 years and during that time taught Ammar Campa-Najjar, who is the person who selected him to become an elector.California gets 55 electors because of the 53 congressional districts and two senators. Electors are chosen by the party’s nominee who won the popular vote. Campa-Najjar got the most votes for Congress’ 50th District primary election in 2020, making him the person to choose the elector. Sure let's do it,'" said Bolland.Bolland said he’ll be flying to Sacramento on Dec. 14 to cast his vote. That vote, however, can only be for one person."I don’t even have any choice about who to vote for because California, like 48 states, is a winner-take-all state. So Biden won California, I’ll be casting my vote for Biden regardless of what my political views are," said Bolland.He added that he’s honored to be chosen in such a historic role, but acknowledges the flaws in the Electoral College system."Politically, I’ve had my concerns and questions about the Electoral College. It’s fundamentally anti-democratic," he said.The Electoral College was created by our founding fathers in 1787. They wanted to find a balance between giving too much power to the people with a simple popular vote, without giving all of the power to Congress. The Electoral College was their solution.Bolland points out that it makes some votes useless.“Last night, Joe Biden won by like 60 something percent and Trump lost by 30 something percent. But that’s a lot of people in California who voted for Trump and with the Electoral College they get erased,” he said, adding that there are Biden votes that get erased in right-leaning states as well. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man was arrested Saturday after allegedly assaulting an elderly woman at a Central Coast beach parking lot in San Luis Obispo, law officials said.Morro Bay Police Officers responded to a disturbance call at around 1 p.m. at the Morro Rock parking lot on Coleman Drive, authorities said.Witnesses told officers that the suspect assaulted an elderly woman and knocked her to the ground. Numerous people witnessed the attack and went to help the victim, according to police.Officials said the woman was treated by first responders for moderate injuries.In a press release, officials said Brian Robert Sprinkle, 39, of La Jolla, "was participating in a surf competition when he exited the water and assaulted the woman without provocation."Sprinkle was booked in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on felony charges of elder abuse and battery, according to Morro Bay police.Officers also found a firearm with Sprinkle's property and seized it.It is believed the suspect was under the influence of marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs, police said in a statement.Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Morro Bay Police Department (805) 772-6225.While police say Sprinkle was taking part in the Big, Bad and Ugly surf competition, surf contest organizers tell KSBY News he was not registered with the contest and is not affiliated with any of the surf clubs that participated.ABC 10News affiliate KSBY News contributed to this report. 1497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego prison worker has tested positive for coronavirus, as California prepares to release 3,500 non-violent offenders.CoreCivic, the private company that runs the Otay Mesa Detention Center, confirmed to 10News that an employee who works at the facility has tested positive for COVID-19.The company discovered the positive test on March 30. The employee was last at work on March 21. That individual is currently resting at home in isolation.RELATED: Brother of ICE detainee worried 'he'll die in there'"Efforts are currently underway to notify other employees or contractors who may have been in contact with the individual who tested positive," a CoreCivic spokesperson said. The confirmation comes the same day California officials announced the state would grant an early release to 3,500 non-violent offenders who are due to be released in the next 60 days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Ocean Beach woman was alarmed by a flier taped to her door saying "the antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him." Holly Raines said her 7-year-old son found the flier taped on their front door. “I started reading the letter but I was like half asleep so I started panicking a little bit because it just seemed very threatening and very intense,” Raines said. Several other neighbors say they got one too. The letter stated it was from New Life Christian Chapel, which is a few blocks away from where Raines lives in Ocean Beach. “It was very damning and then it has like a phrase that says ‘The antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him, there is no middle ground,’” she said. Raines said the flier quotes several Bible verses but found them far from comforting. “The words just aren’t very friendly, they talk about slaying lambs and antichrist and unrighteousness,” Raines said. It ended by inviting her to a home Bible study but she can't help but feel like the church crossed a line. “We have a lot of friends that go to church around here and a lot of the community churches here are awesome, they do great things,” Raines said. “The idea of taping anything on somebody’s door is a lot and this is a full document of typing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A tortoise no longer on the loose is still waiting for its rightful owner in East County.The tortoise, believed to be an older male, was found Thursday by Heartland Paramedics.It was roaming the streets of El Cajon and is now staying at the El Cajon Animal Shelter.Workers there say this is not a situation they often face.“Not in the City of El Cajon," said Shelter Manager Jill Jones. "Perhaps in outer-lying counties, they have a little more tortoise traffic, but we generally do not."A family who saw the original 10News story believed the tortoise was their beloved pet Frankie who went missing a week ago. However, upon arrival at the shelter, they quickly realized this tortoise was much larger.If you believe the tortoise is yours, you can go to the shelter during regular business hours.
