She’s a businesswoman who has expressed support for the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon and been criticized for a series of racist comments. BALTIMORE — It's not just the news of a Free Little Library being vandalized that is turning heads in a Baltimore community. The narration of the crime itself is worth its weight in laughter."I thought it was hilarious when I sped it up and cut it," said Jacqui Cummings. "I said to myself, 'you don't need to fight over it, just make a joke of it.'"The initial vandalism happened on November 7th around 8 p.m. outside Notre Maison Connects. The non-profit focuses on empowering youth while supporting families and strengthening communities.Cummings is the founder of the organization. She said when she first saw the damage, she shed a tear."I did because I do a lot of work myself," she said.Cummings is no stranger to hands-on-work. Not only did she do metal-work to create the Free Little Library, she's experienced in hard labor, helping build day-care centers in other countries."I love giving back and educating," she said.In light of the vandalism Cummings launched a community book drive. As more and more public spaces open back up, many people are finding themselves a little jumpy when they hear someone cough nearby. Are they sick, is it allergies, is it coronavirus?Chances are, we are jumping to conclusions about those “sick” sounds we find disgusting, according to a recently published study from the University of Michigan and University of California, Irvine.“We find no evidence that perceivers can reliably detect pathogen threats from cough and sneeze sounds, even though they are reasonably certain they can,” said Nicholas Michalak, the study’s lead author and a University of Michigan psychology graduate student.In other words, we humans are not very good at distinguishing the seriousness of a cough or sniffle by the sound of it. In fact, the study found that the more disgusting a person perceived the sound to be, the more likely they were to believe the sound came from an infected person, regardless of whether it did.Previous research has indicated people can accurately diagnose infection in others using other senses, like sight and smell.The research is based on four studies that had participants judge whether a cough or sneeze sound came from people infected with a communicable (easily spread) disease or not. On average, participants guessed four out of ten sounds correctly.“Moreover, there was no evidence that accuracy improved when participants knew the true number of infectious sounds in advance or when participants focused on how clear or disgusting they perceived the sounds,” Michalak said. “Despite this poor overall accuracy, perceivers consistently reported reasonable certainty in their judgments.”The study’s authors theorized that people have a belief that a sound that disgusts them is likely to represent a disease threat - this could lead them to exhibit biases to avoid interactions with others who make disgusting but noninfectious noises, according to Mickalak.The study’s co-authors are Oliver Sng, assistant professor of psychological science at UC-Irvine, and U-M graduate student Iris Wang and U-M associate professor of psychology Joshua Ackerman.Read the full study here. 2150

(AP) — The California Highway Patrol says an officer conducting a routine traffic stop found ,000 of stolen Disney merchandise.The CHP says a Nissan Sentra was pulled over Friday in Kern County after the driver failed to stop when approaching a school bus.The officer learned the driver's license was suspended and then discovered hundreds of pins and other merchandise allegedly stolen from Disneyland.Officials didn't immediately identify the motorist.Authorities say the CHP has contacted Disneyland security and made arrangements to return the property. 588

As parents try to safely entertain their children this summer, many have turned to trampoline parks, bounce houses and bowling alleys that have reopened. But what are the risks of this indoor fun? We asked doctors to weigh in."I think it makes me a little nervous as an infectious disease doctor. A couple reasons. One, it's bringing a lot of people in close proximity and I think we don’t really know what the potential is for transmission in children to other children and adults," said Dr. Beth Thielen, an infectious disease expert with the University of Minnesota.Dr. Thielen says there are still a lot of unknowns when it comes to how easily children can spread the coronavirus to each other. Plus, the effectiveness of masks at an indoor venue like a trampoline park could be minimal. "It's a lot of people in a potentially close space where there’s a lot of aggressive jumping and such, more respiratory secretions. Potentially similar to singing or other activities where you’re producing a lot of droplets and I think that there's real potential to spread in a confined group at this time," Dr. Thielen said.We reached out to dozens of trampoline facilities, bounce house venues and bowling alleys across the country. Only Bowlero Corporation, which also owns AMF and Bowlmor Lanes, responded, directing us to their website listing their new health and safety measures when it comes to protecting guests from COVID-19.The message on their site reads: "As we begin to reopen centers across the country, nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our guests and staff. In addition to following State and Federal guidelines on COVID-19, we are taking precautions to ensure your visit with us will be safe."Some of their listed new safety measures include temperature checks and masks for their staff. On Launch Family Entertainment's website, which owns Launch Trampoline Park franchises nationwide, the company details their "rigorous STERILE cleanliness certification program." The national certification ensures contactless entry for guests, face masks and gloves for staff, sanitation stations plus reduced capacity.Dr. Thielen responded, "I think it all depends. The devil's in the details in terms of the number and in terms of how restricted [it is]. Is it groups of people who are all spending time together and they're quarantining together in a contained group or is it a mixed population of people from different sites that could be intermixing?" She adds, if she were forced to choose between a trampoline park, bounce house venue or bowling alley, she'd go with bowling alley."I think if people go to a bowling alley and they're wearing masks and staying in their individual space, then there's potential physical separation between people in one lane and another. That's something I would be looking at, can you maintain physical space from other people? It seems harder in a trampoline park but if that could be done safely that would be a positive factor," said Dr. Thielen. Above all, ensuring people are not sick at these indoor venues is key. And it's best to leave high risk populations, such as people with medical concerns or over the age of 60, at home. 3210
