ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — A 3-year-old gelding was fatally injured in the fifth race at Santa Anita on Saturday, becoming the 34th horse to die at the track since December.According to a statement from track owner The Stronach Group, jockey Ruben Fuentes pulled up Satchel Paige at the three-eighths pole of the 6 1/2-furlong sprint. Track veterinarian Dr. Dana Stead saw that the gelding had sustained an open fracture of his left front ankle and decided to euthanize him.Fuentes wasn't injured in the ,000 race featuring horses that had yet to win.Dr. Dionne Benson, chief vet for The Stronach Group, said the gelding will undergo a required necropsy at UC Davis. She said the accident and necropsy report will be reviewed "to learn what, if anything, could have been to prevent the accident."Benson said Santa Anita will work with the California Horse Racing Board to investigate the accident.Trained by Phil D'Amato, Satchel Paige was winless in six career starts, with one second and one third-place finish. He had career earnings of ,002.He was bred and owned by retired luxury car dealer Nick Alexander, chairman of the Thoroughbred Owners of California, which represents the collective interests of owners in the state and works to preserve the sport's long-term viability.Santa Anita is set to host the Breeders' Cup world championships for a record 10th time on Nov. 1-2. 1392

An 8-year-old boy in Polk County, Florida caught an 11-foot, 3-inch gator late last month. It was his first real catch despite gator hunting several times with his dad.Grayson Chantley caught the gator on Lake Kissimmee late last month. He says his dad woke him up around midnight to go hunting. "Whenever they're big, I'm just like I want to get this gator," said Chantley. His dad caught it all on tape. Video shows the moment he landed the gator. Photos show the gator's head is almost the size of the 8-year-old. Chantley also showed off his catch to his older brother."I'm just shocked," added Chantley.Florida's state record for the largest gator caught happened in 2010 in Brevard County. The gator was 14 feet 3.5 inches, according to state wildlife officials.Grayson says he's still amazed."It teaches him how to survive. American soybean farmers are still waiting to see the benefit of President Donald Trump's trade truce with China. The President said Tuesday that China is "back in the market" to buy American soybeans -- but farmers said that was the first they had heard of any change since July, when China retaliated against new American tariffs by blocking imports of US agricultural products."I've heard rumors that they're going to buy our beans and put them in reserve, but I don't see ships sitting in our ports to haul them to China yet," said John Heisdorffer, an Iowa soybean grower and chairman of the American Soybean Association, on Wednesday."I hate to say it this way, but everything so far has been talk. The reality is, you want to see something before you actually feel good about it," he added.Another Iowa soybean grower, Dustin Sage, also told CNN Wednesday that he hadn't "heard anything concrete yet" about new orders from China.Soybean farmers have been hit hard by the US-China trade dispute. Exports to China, which was the biggest market for American farmers last year, slowed dramatically after July when Beijing imposed tariffs on US products in retaliation to Trump's duties on Chinese goods.Trump told Reuters in an interview late Tuesday that China was beginning to buy soybeans immediately."I just heard today that they're buying tremendous amounts of soybeans. They are starting, just starting now," he said an interview. The newswire reported that Chinese state-owned companies bought at least 0 million of soybeans on Wednesday.Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to a temporary truce?on December 1 after meeting at the G20 summit in Argentina. At the time, Trump said Beijing committed to increasing purchases of agricultural products, but offered few details about how much they would buy or when.Farmers, who don't sell soybeans overseas directly, may not be the first to know about new orders from abroad. The US Soybean Export Council, which represents shippers and merchandisers, could not immediately be reached on Wednesday.Government data due to be published Thursday could show whether soybeans shipments to China increased during the week after Trump and Xi's meeting. The Farm Bureau has estimated that soybean exports to China are down 97% this year. Prices for a bushel of soybeans fell by after the tariffs went into place. The Trump administration has offered an emergency aid package to farmers hurt by tariffs. In September, about .6 billion was allocated for soybean farmers specifically. But the American Soybean Association said it would only "partially offset" the losses farmers will see this year.At the time, the USDA said it could release a second round of aid before the end of the year, but farmers are still waiting to hear if it will come through.Farmers are worried that some of the trade lost to China will never come back, because buyers will have already found new producers in other countries."Every little bit helps this year. But in the long term, we would rather have trade and an open market," Sage said. 3130

Are masks complicating facial recognition software? The short answer is no, but masks do complicate matters.Computer science experts say that face coverings and other accessories may act as a speedbump, but it wouldn’t be very difficult for the software to be modified. However, with a face covering, recognition may be less accurate.“It has fewer data points and that is the concern,” Steve Beaty, computer science professor at Metro State University-Denver, said. “Because you are essentially removing your nose and your mouth from the equation if you will, there will be fewer data points and the concern is that other people can authenticate as you.”Before the use of face masks, facial recognition software had an inaccuracy rate of less than 1 percent. Now, the National Institute of Standards and Technology estimates that the inaccuracy rate has increased from 5 to 20 percent. 892

Are you guilty of photographing your food to post on social media? You may not realize it, but those posts are helping out restaurants.Voodoo Doughnut in Denver, Colorado is one shop that has received free advertisement, thanks to their ‘Instagramable’ doughnut creations.Cat Daddy and Tres Shannon, the owners of the world-famous doughnut shop, say when they started, it was all about luring customers in with their eccentric aesthetic.   "Kind of like we've created this colorful, crazy psychedelic place that sort of lends its self to take pictures in front of,” says Shannon.“Everyone is into the esthetic of their Instagram and how your pictures look together, so if the food matches your Instagram, that looks good," says one patron.   Having free advertisement on social media platforms helps business, and restaurants need all the help they can get. 60 percent of new restaurants don't make it past the first year, according to an Ohio State University study.  That's why other spots are cooking up their own unique creations.   Chomp Eatery and Juice Station in Santa Monica have the “Unicorn Melt,” a spin on the grilled cheese sandwich. Black Tap in New York is popular for what it calls their “Crazy Shakes.” You can't help but take a pic of these eye-catching foods.  The owners of Voodoo Doughnut believe social media posts has helped their business reach a wider audience.   "It definitely helps business. You have so many people talking about the product or the space as you say inside or outside,” Shannon says. But for a lot people, a great picture can't replace great food.    1667
