A maker of the Carolina reaper hot pepper is defending distributing the pepper after a man became hospitalized from eating the pepper, the UK's Sky News reported. The Carolina reaper was named the world's hottest pepper last year by the Guinness Book of World Records. The pepper is rated at 2.2 million Scoville heat units. By comparison, a jalapeno is rated up to 8,000 Scoville heat units. A habanero is rated up to 300,000 Scoville heat units. An article in last week's British Medical Journal claimed that a 34-year-old man was hospitalized for eating the pepper during a hot pepper eating contest. The man experienced "thunderclap" headaches, The report also claimed the man's arteries had constricted after consuming the pepper. But Salvatore Genovese, a grower and distributor of the Carolina reaper, said the pepper should be eaten "correctly," according to the Sky News.  "It's not really designed to... just plonk it in your mouth and eat it," Genovese said. "I would never do that and I wouldn't recommend it."Just cook with it, make a curry, infuse it slowly take it out if you want to afterwards, and get the rich flavors from that super-hot chili."Genovese told Sky News he sold nearly 500,000 over the last few years without hearing any complaints. The unidentified 34-year-old man showed normal health five weeks after eating the pepper.  1458

A father and son are accused of slaughtering a female black bear and her two cubs as they rested in their den in April.Andrew Renner, 41, and Owen Renner, 18, of Palmer, Alaska face several felony and misdemeanor charges related to illegal hunting. It is against the law to shoot a black bear with cubs in Alaska.Alaska Wildlife Troopers, which announced the charges on Monday, said the act was caught on a motion-activated camera set up inside the den to monitor the bears as part of a study being conducted by the US Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The camera produced both video and audio of the encounter."In this case numerous crimes, including felonies, are believed to have been committed," trooper Col. Steve Smith said. Smith said the truck and boat used to transport the Renners to and from the bears' den have been seized.The father and son were out skiing together on April 14 when they approached the inhabited den, troopers said in a statement.The video captures Owen Renner firing two rounds at the adult bear inside her den, the troopers said. Andrew Renner then killed the "shrieking" newborn cubs and discarded their bodies outside the den, the statement said.Court documents obtained by CNN affiliate KTVA say that Andrew Renner is captured on video saying: "It doesn't matter. Bear down."The men also removed the adult bear's tracking collar."They'll never be able to link it to us," Owen Renner said, according to the court documents.Two days later, the men were captured on video returning to the den to pick up shells casings and dispose of the bear cubs, troopers said.Two weeks later, on April 30, Andrew Renner brought the adult bear's skin and tracking collar to officials at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, saying that he realized after shooting it that it was a nursing bear and had not seen any cubs.The men have been charged with unlawfully taking a female bear with cubs, unlawfully taking a bear cub and possessing and transporting illegally taken game. A couple of Las Vegas newlyweds made an extremely selfless move by asking their wedding guests to donate to their favorite animal rescue organization in lieu of wedding gifts.Jessica Rauch and Tony Lopez feel fortunate they were able to make a decision like this."We're very blessed to have a lot of the things that we would already need in life," said Rauch.They're also both dog lovers."We both great up with dogs and love animals very much."They decided to put their heads together and figure out how they could give back on their wedding day."Both of us really like to give back and volunteer for nonprofits and we like to live our lives in a charitable way so we thought hey what better tribute than to encourage our friends and family, if they want to give us a gift, to donate to A Home 4 Spot," said Rauch.The couple recently adopted their two dogs from A Home 4 Spot?and loves the way they operate."We didn't know much about them but they were this amazing group of volunteers foster the puppies in their homes and when we met them, and the volunteers, and then of course they introduced us to Shorty, we fell in love with the whole operation."All the pieces came together and donating to their cause was what the couple wanted to do."Our friends and family were so generous and really stepped up to the plate."The couple was able to write a check for ,000 to the animal rescue group."Everything matters and so any donation that they receive goes to food or leashes or anything they need to keep the operation running."Rauch says the rescue group was ecstatic."(They were) over the moon thrilled and we couldn't be happier that that was the decision that we made."Also, instead of having their wedding party hold flowers to walk down the aisle, each member carried a shelter dog instead. 1806

A fourth-grade teacher in Florida was arrested on Saturday after deputies found a 4-year-old in the woman's custody wandering alone outside, the Orlando Sentinel reported. The Polk County, Florida Sheriff's Office said that the boy was discovered at 7:30 a.m. Saturday crying and asking for help. The boy was only wearing a t-shirt and underwear. The teacher, 26-year-old Marsha Dolce, claimed she was helping a friend with a broken down car when she left the child at home. But deputies found marijuana and a grinder on the kitchen counter, the Sentinel reported. When deputies pressed Dolce, she admitted that she had lied, and visited someone she knew had marijuana while the boy was sleeping. Dolce was charged with negligent child abuse, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia."This is not what we expect from a person in a position of public trust,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement to the Sentinel. “To think about this poor scared child crying in the street, not knowing where mom was — it is just a shame and should not have happened."Dolce was reportedly only a teacher for three months before her arrest.  1209

A COVID-19 vaccine candidate being produced by biotech company Moderna has shown to be 94.5% effective in Phase 3 clinical trials, the company said Monday.The news means that the company is on track to request Emergency Use Authorization status for the drug in the coming weeks. The vaccine is already being mass-produced and thousands of doses will be ready to ship following authorization.Moderna's vaccine is closely tied with "Operation Warp Speed," a Trump administration program that provided nearly billion in government funding for research and support, and placed the vaccine on an FDA fast-track.On Aug. 11, the Department of Health and Human Services announced it was paying .5 billion ".5 billion in funds to support the large-scale manufacturing and delivery" for 100 million doses of Moderna's vaccine candidate.Moderna said Monday that 20 million doses of its vaccine will be available to ship by the end of 2020, and is on track to produce between 500 million and 1 billion doses in 2021.Health experts believe that a vaccine will be available to some people by the end of 2020, and will be widely available in spring 2021. Though it's unclear who specifically will qualify to receive the drug first, doses will need to be rationed for several months before vaccines are widely available.The release comes a week after Pfizer announced its own vaccine candidate was also on track for mass distribution after showing 90% effectiveness in Phase 3 trials.Moderna's announcement comes as welcome news to the U.S., where COVID-19 is currently spreading at a rate unseen since the pandemic first hit.
