SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego’s unemployment rate is near historic lows, but plenty of people are still out of work. 10News is exploring ways to help you improve your competitive edge in the job market. “I freelance, and I have a part-time job that has been helping me get through,” said Katie Orchard, who has been looking for full-time work for the past four months. Orchard is in search of stability, but in a competitive job market, that search becomes more difficult. However, the employment rate in San Diego is also down. With a job market continually changing, how do you improve your edge and stand out?According to Allie Barara and Dana Ellison, both recruiters at Creative Circle in San Diego, the key to standing out, is your resume. It’s kinda like that black hole of the unknown once you submit your resume,” said Allie Barara. Barara says, job candidates need to be specific with programs and software. “I think what a lot of people miss on their resume, is that they don’t spell out the specific softwares they are proficient in. I think showing that at the top of their resume is really going to highlight and give you those extra buzzwords,” said Barara. Another way to make your resume stand out is including or obtaining certificates in your specific field of interest. But also the specific softwares and CMS’ will really stick out to employers. They want you to have the experience, but having that certification to back it up, will also go a long way as well,” Barara said. According to Dana Ellison, a senior recruiter, a common mistake job seekers make is not applying for the right job.“I say titles are a little nebulous. If you see a job and say hey this describes all the skill sets I do, but it’s not how I’m marketing myself, that would be a great way to start,” said Ellison. Ellison also suggests job seekers ditch the fluff words to make room for things that matter. “If someone says they are a good communicator, a team player, a fast learner, those are things literally everyone says, so those things can be left off,” said Ellison. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University will begin testing all students who live on campus for COVID-19, the school said Tuesday.According to the university, the testing will start on September 16. After the initial phase of testing, the school will begin testing students at random. “Following the initial phase of benchmark testing for all students in residence this week, we will then launch random testing for the on-campus housing population. During each round of testing, a set of individuals from each residential community group will be randomly sampled to be re-tested,” the school said.The news comes as 648 students tested positive or presumptive positive for the virus.According to SDSU, 644 students have so far tested positive for the virus. Four students are presumptive positive.So far, no faculty or staff have tested positive for coronavirus. 875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld guests are getting their first look at a sea otter pup recently rescued in Alaska and taken in by San Diego staff for care.Cinder, an orphaned sea otter brought to SeaWorld earlier this month from Alaska, has nearly doubled in weight and has been hitting all the developmental milestones for her age, the theme park said. Veterinarians have been caring for the pup around the clock, the park says, and she has been adjusting well to her new home.RELATED: Orphaned sea otter pup brought from Alaska to SeaWorld's careCinder is viewable just in time for Sea Otter Awareness Week. SeaWorld keepers will be hosting presentations about otters and ways to public can help in their care in the wild through Saturday.The young pup arrived at the Alaska SeaLife Center underweight and dehydrated, before being transferred to San Diego. Cinder's now weighs a little more than 10 pounds, feeding on a special sea otter milk formula every three hours.Guests can view Cinder periodically throughout the day at the Otter Outlook nursery.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has deemed Cinder non-releasable, so SeaWorld's Animal Rescue Team and veterinarians have provided constant care. She is expected to be introduced to the park's other resident female sea otters — Mocha, Coco, Clover and Pumpkin, who range in age from five to nine years old — who were also orphaned. 1393
