SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and local military members are working to put smiles on the faces of kids this holiday season. The 2019 Toys for Tots drive started Sunday. The fire department is partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. They have been collecting toys for more than 15 years. Through December 16, all San Diego Fire facilities will be collecting toys and books. The items must be new and unwrapped. Toys for Tots is in its 71st year. U.S. Marines distribute the donated items to the children each year. Since 1947, more than 244 million children have benefited from the toy drive. Local Marines are asking for volunteers to help distribute the items, Monday through Friday, from 9a to 3 pm. The distribution site is at 9955 Pomerado Road. 790

It's a saying at the heart of a new experiment called itsblackandwhite.us.Ryan Berman, along with Ahab Nimry and several other marketing and advertising agency representatives say they wanted to figure out how to start a constructive conversation about things like race, implicit bias and equity."For one, getting perspective and understanding a bias you might have because you can't do anything about it if you can't spot it," said Berman.So they came up with a 10 question, online survey that asks things like, "Do you believe hard work puts you on your path for a promotion?Do you have a close friend that is black?""We're not trying to nudge you one way or the other, we're just trying to say hey pick a side lets start talking and work this out," explained Nimry.At the end, you get to see how other people responded and access links to learn more, donate to civil rights organizations, even register to vote.The creators say the idea is to share what they learn and then take all that data and develop a sort of "seal of approval" for consumers to know how different companies stack up."Launching almost a diversity/inclusion certification for organizations," said Berman. "It's not about calling out companies. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - California Gov. Gavin Newsom said indoor operations must close in the state, so some businesses like gyms and restaurants are moving outside. For the beauty industry, there’s a divide. While Newsom and San Diego County officials said businesses can move outside, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology won’t allow it.Bahar Radman is a stylist at Del Beauty Box and said she already started cutting hair in her salon’s parking lot. She said it works because there is more space to spread out, there is better airflow, she already has the cosmetology training on best hygiene practices, and she’s also taking coronavirus safety precautions, like keeping a mask on the whole time. She said of her first three outdoor clients, all were happy with the setup and already booked return appointments.This goes against the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology rules, though. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Consumer Affairs said, “The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology understands the effect shutdowns have on businesses and is sensitive to that. As it stands at this moment, under current laws and regulations, the services cannot be performed outside. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- People living on the streets are worried that the new portable restrooms installed by the city will get shut down because of those using them for illegal activity.  The city installed four portable bathrooms on First and C Street near City Hall. Four hand washing stations were also installed.On Monday, people using the restrooms were thankful and said the restrooms were long overdue. One man, a Navy veteran, told 10News he's used the restroom twice since they were installed. On one of those trips, he found a used needle. He worries drug users will force the city to shut the bathrooms down. The area has 24-hour security. Security guards work in 12- hour shifts. One guard told 10News he warns people that they can't stay in the bathroom for too long. The city plans on installing other portable restrooms at different locations in the coming weeks. Those locations haven't been announced.  962

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Even after following the health and safety guidelines, many business owners are dealing with a significant setback, as they're forced to close up shop once again."It's about to be very hard right now, very hard," said Chris Cage, owner of Originality Barber Salon in North Park. "I'm trying to think if we should still keep the business, we still gotta pay rent, and we can't even use it."Cage runs the shop, a combination of a barbershop and a hair salon with his wife, Melissa Cage."She's a cosmetologist also; she's in the shop. We got four kids together," he said.After recently reopening and getting back on their feet, the alarming rise of COVID-19 cases and fear of overwhelming hospital systems has resulted in California Gov. Gavin Newsom putting restrictions back in place for some counties across the state, including San Diego.Starting Wednesday, all fitness centers, places of worship, offices for non-critical sectors, personal care services, hair salons, barbershops, and indoor malls will have to cease indoor operations until further notice.San Diego County Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, said outdoor haircuts would only be allowed depending on the rules and permit requirements that exist in various jurisdictions."I'm looking into going in the back patio and cutting hair outside," said Cage.For now, it's yet another uncertainty for the businesses already struggling during this pandemic."I hope we could survive this one because it costs a lot of money to be paying for something that you're not even really using," said Cage. 1584
