SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In a school year where parents and teachers have had to adjust over and over again, teachers are sharing their stories of hope and gratitude with ABC 10News.Dawn Harrison teachers her first grade students virtually from her classroom in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She hopes one day, she won’t be alone in her class.“I would much prefer to be face to face with my kids and be able to get the hugs… be able to pat their little back or hold their hands,” Harrison said.She knows that is not a reality right now, but thinks about what she is grateful for. She looks forward to monthly distribution days, where she will see colleagues and students for a brief moment when they pick up materials. She is thankful for parents, as she knows this has been difficult for everyone.“They take into consideration my thoughts and feelings, too,” Harrison said. “The parents that have shared with me, they’ve been very thoughtful of taking everybody’s perspective and situations at home.”Harrison has also found an even greater love for another teacher— her husband.“The way he engages [his students], the experiences he’s able to provide for them, it gives me a new appreciation for him,” she said of her husband Rick Meads, a teacher at Eastlake High School.Meads sang his wife’s praises as well. “I’m telling you, the amount of energy that she has to expend for first graders is a whole lot different than what I have to do,” he said. “I don’t know how she does it, but she’s amazing.”Meads is grateful that he is still able to teach, although it is in a format that is new for many educators.“I’m really thankful that we are able to have this opportunity to do this online. If you think about this ten years ago, it would have never happened,” Meads said. ‘I’m not sure what we would have done.”During the summer, elementary school teacher Kelly Martin told ABC 10News that someone described the current situation as a “corona coaster.”With many still on this “corona coaster,” Martin is thankful for her students. “I’m so appreciative of that hard work because three months of this is getting a little draining on some of them,” she said. “I just look forward to finding ways to keep connecting with the students.”As she looks ahead to a new year, Martin said she hopes to “keep it fresh and keep it new, so that the monotony of online learning doesn't drag us down.” 2402

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jalen McDaniels, San Diego State University basketball's sophomore forward, was accused of filming consensual sex acts with a classmate in 2016 without her knowledge and sharing it with friends, according to a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washington.The civil suit alleges McDaniels recorded the intimate moments with an 18-year-old female student while they were both seniors at Federal Way High School near Tacoma, Wash.The lawsuit goes on to say while McDaniels later told the plaintiff about the unauthorized recordings and that he had shared it with his friends, she learned from other students that the video became widely circulated. When she confronted McDaniels, he explained he had gotten away with a similar incident involving another female student, according to the lawsuit.The plaintiff's attorney, Joan Mell, who filed the suit, wrote her client has suffered from several self-destructive behaviors as a result, including attempting suicide.SDSU is accused of wrongdoing in the lawsuit as well.Mell alleges in the lawsuit that SDSU was contacted by Washington police to provide them with McDaniels' phone number, but failed to do so. The suit says SDSU, instead, alerted former basketball coach Steve Fisher, who secured McDaniels a lawyer, and McDaniels refused to cooperate.The suit goes on to allege McDaniels' refusal to cooperate and, "that others concealed his wrongdoing prevented prompt criminal investigation and referral to the prosecutor's office for timely filing of criminal charges under Washington’s criminal offense of distribution of intimate images."In a statement, SDSU said there would be "no change in [McDaniels'] status at the university" at this time, after an investigation by Washington authorities resulted in no charges before McDaniels' enrollment at the school: 1837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a young South Bay woman to COVID-19.In mid-September, Elvira Martinez became the first in her family to come down with COVID-19 symptoms. She tested positive and was hospitalized days later. Around the same time, her daughter Cassie, who lived with her mother at a home in Nestor, started feeling sick."Her first symptoms were a cough and then a fever in after that," said Cassie's boyfriend Ricardo Ferreyra.A week later, Ferreyra brought her to the ER."She couldn't hold down food, barely able to stand up," said Ferreyra.She was admitted and diagnosed with COVID-related myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Her brother David says in the next 24 hours, she would suffer two heart attacks. On Saturday, Cassie Martinez, who had no underlying conditions, died at the age of 29."I miss her so much. She had the beautiful personality of anyone I've ever known. She walked into a room, and it lit up," said David Martinez."I'm heartbroken, in a million pieces. She was so caring, put everybody else first," said Ferreyra.Ferreyra says it was love at first sight the day he met her at the insurance company they both worked at more than eight years ago."She captivated me and has done so ever since that day," said Ferreyra.He had decided to propose to her, possibly on their eight-year anniversary in mid-October."I wanted to take her out on a sailboat, spend some time together and propose in the middle of the ocean ... She is my soulmate, somebody I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We had so many plans," said Ferreyra.Family members aren't sure how they contracted the virus. Both Cassie and her mother were taking precautions and staying close to home. Her mother remains on a ventilator in an ICU.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1856

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared.The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Respect people's rights to say what they want to say," said Spaulding.Spaulding isn't alone. Local Republican Party officials say they've received more than a 100 reports of stolen Trump signs, a greater number when compared to previous presidential elections.In Coronado, police responded Wednesday to seven homes, where yard signs reading "Racism Lives Here" appeared in front of the homes of Trump supporters who were displaying signs or flags.It isn't just Trump backers being targeted. On the Nextdoor mobile app, ABC 10News found numerous examples of signs supporting presidential challenger Joe Biden stolen.Just south of Balboa Ave., Margo Thomas woke up Wednesday to her Biden/Harris yard sign gone."To me, it just feels like you’re stifling free speech," said Thomas.There is still no mistaking who Thomas is backing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In an effort to accelerate hiring and training of more border officer, National Guard members were deployed Tuesday to ports of entry along San Diego County's border with Mexico.In total, 24 National Guard troops joined Customs and Border Protection personnel at Port of San Diego, and ports of entry in San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, Tecate, and Calexico.They will not be taking part in any enforcement activities, according to CBP, instead, helping in surveillance support and operations. The deployed troops will not be armed.RELATED: Border Patrol officials discuss National Guard deployment to US-Mexico borderUp to 106 additional National Guard troops may be sent to the ports of entry in the coming weeks, CBP added."The contribution of the National Guard will undoubtedly improve our effectiveness at the ports of entry by enabling those officers to focus on enforcement activities," Pete Flores, CBP Director of field operations for San Diego, said. "We look forward to working collaboratively to further our national security mission."CBP says the additional troops will allow border personnel to focus on securing areas of the border against drug, weapons, and human smuggling. 1247
