(KGTV)- UC San Diego Health has had a goal to increase testing since the start of this pandemic, according to Dr. David Pride, the Associate Director of Microbiology.Now, UCSD Health has started using a new testing strategy; pool testing.“We’ve really been thinking about what is it that we can do to sort of extend testing in the San Diego region,” said Pride. “Pooling is absolutely a strategy, for example, that employers can use on their employees that universities can use, for example, on their students.”As the nation faces another COVID-19 testing supply shortage, Pride said this could be one solution to conserving the current supply.“Pool testing works by taking a group of individuals and placing all of their specimens together,” he said.Instead of using one test per person, samples from several people are collected and tested together.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends pool testing to be used only when the positive rate is low enough to justify pooling.“If that pool tests negative, then you can call each individual that was in that pool negative,” said Pride.If the pool tests positive, then each person is retested individually.“We test a lot of different patient populations, so we know what the prevalence of disease is in those patient populations, and we’ve chosen to use those with the lowest prevalence of disease for our pool testing,” Pride explained.He said they are currently using a five to one strategy, meaning five people per one test.“We’ve done probably somewhere around 500 to 600 so far. The majority of the batches have been negative, we’ve had less than 10 percent of the pools test positive,” Pride said, which is what his team expected.Pride said he heard positive feedback about pool testing from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).“Just a few weeks ago, we submitted our emergency use authorization to the FDA, and we think we’re probably getting fairly close to that getting approved,” he said.Soon, pride expects to start doing more pool testing, while also speeding up the process.“Right now, we’re really working on it in a very manual fashion,” he said. “That takes a lot of time to do, so we’re in the process of automating it by bringing in machinery to do that work that people are doing right now.” 2287

(KGTV) - Neighbors who live off a quiet Rancho Pe?asquitos road say they are fed up with crime, litter, and abandoned cars steps from their front doors.Danielle Salice, who lives in the area, says the region's high cost of living is keeping her from moving. "I'm paying good money to live in a place that's beautiful, San Diego, let alone owning my condo," she said. "But I'm not being able to use my neighborhood."Salice lives in a condo complex at the end of Azuega Street in Rancho Pe?asquitos. She and her neighbors are reporting drug paraphernalia, abandoned cars, and a series of car break-ins. On Friday, there were two piles of broken car glass in the road. One man who declined to give his name said his car was broken into last month, and his daughter's softball gear was stolen. Salice said it's an ongoing problem on the road. "As a single-family person, I don't feel safe walking on this street," she said. Here's the problem - Azuaga Street is a long straightaway largely hidden from view, just south of the 56. There are no homes on the final stretch of the road - one side has a retaining wall up a hill. The other is mostly brush. It ends at a condo complex called Terra Vista. "There's no lighting, and this is an easy place to hide," Salice said. Salice said her HOA has discussed adding a gate to the complex and a guard, but they are cost prohibitive. (KGTV) -- The National Transportation Safety Board ruled Tuesday that the lack of adequate oversight by Truth Aquatics Inc. led to a boat fire that killed 34 people off Santa Cruz Island last year.San Diegan Nicole Quitasol and four of her family members were among the 34 killed in the September 2019 blaze.The NTSB said Tuesday that the fire aboard the Conception diving boat is one of the deadliest maritime tragedies in the United States.“The message is clean up your act, follow your procedures,” said board chairman Robert Sumwalt while speaking about Truth Aquatics Inc.The investigation revealed the 33 passengers and one crewmember killed were in the bunkroom and unable to escape before being overcome with smoke.Investigators told the NTSB some of the victims had on shoes, indicating that they were awake and trying to get out at the time of the fire.Smoke inhalation was listed as the cause of death for all victims.All 34 were two decks below the area where five crewmembers were asleep in the upper deck. The five crewmembers survived.The NTSB agreed on 18 key findings in the investigation, including that the lack of required roving night watchmen and lack of smoke detectors in the salon area of the boat delayed the detection of the fire by crew members, leading to the high number of fatalities.While the fire's exact cause was not determined, the NTSB said it could have possibly been caused by charging electronics and lithium-ion batteries.As a result of its investigation, the NTSB made ten new safety recommendations for the U.S. Coast Guard and others in the industry. Some of the recommendations including a requirement that all newly constructed vessels with overnight accommodations have smoke detectors in all accommodation spaces and that the vessels provide a secondary means of escape into a different space than the primary exit so that a single fire should not affect both escape hatches.“The recommendations that we’ve issued today if implemented that’s the key, if implemented, would reduce the risk of future passenger vessel fires going undetected it would ensure that escape routes exit to different spaces improving the chances for survival for passengers and crew,” said Sumwalt. 2229
