ENFIELD, Ct. – An officer shot and killed a pit bull that police say violently attacked a woman in Connecticut on Tuesday. The Enfield Police Department says the officer was investigating a call at about 4:30 p.m. when he observed the large dog attack the woman. As the officer ran over, the dog continued to bite the woman’s foot, causing severe lacerations and tissue damage, the department said in a statement.Police say the dog’s owners were able to briefly stop the dog from attacking the woman by pouring hot water on it, but the animal then lunged toward to victim’s neck, bit her again and begun to pull her back into the front yard of the property from the sidewalk. The officer then “dispatched” the dog to avoid further injury to the woman, according to the department. The woman was treated by EMS personnel at the scene, but her current condition and the severity of her injuries are unknown at this time.In their statement, the department stressed that actions like killing the dog are taken only under extraordinary circumstances.“This outcome, while unfortunate, appears to have been unavoidable, in an effort to protect the female victim from any further harm or additional injury,” wrote police.A supervisory review of the incident is ongoing. 1265

ESCONDIDO, Cali. (KGTV) — A recently released video shows two burglars forcing their way into a hospice care nonprofit in Escondido.Jan Jones heads The Elizabeth Hospice. Its corporate offices sit on the third floor of an office building in the 500 block of La Terraza Blvd.  One day in July around 4 a.m., two people were recorded on surveillance video sneaking into the parking garage. Minutes later, they're at the main door of the nonprofit. One of the men tries the handle, but can't get in. Then they move onto another secure door, which requires a badge to open.Moments later, from a camera on the inside of the offices, the door is seen being yanked on over and over, before two men forced their way in.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodOne is wearing a hoodie. The other man is sporting a cap and a large backpack. They are seen going from room to room, raiding desks and shelves, and grabbing electronics. Then they split up and make their way out.  Among the items stolen are three laptops."No patient data, but they are used to provide the services we provide," said Jones. Also gone: A pricey camera used to make videos for critical training sessions."We care for people who are seriously ill, and we care for their families, and so anybody doing that would be heartless and should be brought to task. I think whoever did that has no soul," said Jones. The door the men damaged has been replaced by the landlord. The other damage is harder to undo. The group doesn't have the budget to replace the stolen items, including the camera. One of the men has been caught and is in custody. 10News reached out to police to find out which of the suspects is at large, and are waiting to hear back.If you recognize the men, call Escondido Police at 760-839-4722. 1819

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a traffic stop in Escondido early Friday morning. The incident happened at around 3:45 a.m. on Broadway, near Washington Avenue, according to Escondido police.Police said officers were initially called to a home in the 300 block of Park Avenue due to a reported restraining order violation. In the call, a woman said her former husband, 44-year-old Rosendo Sandoval Quezada was at her home and she identified his vehicle. On Broadway, an officer spotted a white car being driven by Quezada and pulled him over.According to police, Quezada "exited his vehicle holding a 3-foot long crow bar and ran toward the officer."Police confirmed the situation prompted the officer to fire multiple shots. Quezada was struck in the abdomen, and he was transported to Palomar Hospital for treatment of his injuries.Police said the officer, who was not injured in the incident, is a 4-year veteran of the department. A lieutenant at the scene told 10News he believes this was the first time the officer was involved in a shooting. The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.According to police, the officer’s body camera was active during the incident.A stretch of Broadway at Washington Ave. was closed for several hours due to the probe. 1364

ENCINITAS (KGTV and CNS) - A body was found in a creek bed near Moonlight State Beach Monday. A passer-by spotted the dead person behind the tennis courts at Cotton Wood Creek near the intersection of Second and West B streets in Encinitas about 9:30 a.m., according to sheriff's officials. The deceased was described only as a while male, investigators said.Deputies searched the area and found no initial signs of injury or foul play. The Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, and notify the family. 565

ESCONDIDO (KGTV) - In one of the closest races this election cycle in San Diego County, Escondido Mayor Sam Abed added nine votes to his narrow lead Tuesday. He now holds a 29-vote advantage over challenger Paul McNamara.Abed is seeking a third term as mayor, first winning in 2010. He was previously a councilman from 2004-2010.Political analyst John Dadian told 10News he did not anticipate the race being so close. "I did not see it coming, so I am suprised. Going into the last week of the campaign, all the people I talked to that really know that area well, they did not see this coming."Dadian feels several factors are playing a role in tightening the race. He cites changing demographics in Escondido, pulling away from the city's long-time conservative majority. Another conservative incumbent, Ed Gallo, appears to be losing his seat, as well.In addition, Democrats in the region had a large turnout, based largely on the unsuccessful effort to oust Congressman Duncan Hunter. That large turnout may have had a down-ballot effect on the mayoral race.Dadian also sites Abed's controversial stance on immigration, leading Escondido's bid to support efforts against California's sanctuary laws and visiting the White House for a highly-publicized meeting with President Trump. Dadian believes that may have helped enthuse opposition against Abed.As of Tuesday night, Registrar of Voters Michael Vu says there are still 299,000 ballots to count county-wide. It is not known how many of those belong to Escondido voters, meaning it will likely be several days until the winner is known. 1630
