BALTIMORE, Maryland — A man running away from the Baltimore Police died after being hit by a car last week.Officers were conducting a narcotics investigation in the 2700 block of Greenmount Avenue around 8:30 p.m. March 28. When they tried to talk to 21-year-old Larry Whitfield during the investigation, he immediately started to run away. Whitfield was able to escape officers and tried to cross Greenmount Avenue when he was hit by a car traveling southbound. He was transported to a hospital where he died Friday morning. The driver of the car was not injured and stayed on the scene after the crash. Detectives are working with the narcotics unit to evaluate all the evidence from the scene. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time.  785

Brad Weldon grabbed a garden hose as the Camp Fire approached his house, spraying water to keep the flames at bay and protect his disabled, elderly mother inside. With fire on all sides, he went from one hose to another. When there were no hoses with water left, he picked up a bucket and started scooping water from his above-ground pool.He had stayed in Paradise, California, to protect his 92-year-old mother, who is blind and was unwilling to leave. With the help of a friend who is his mother's caregiver, Mic McCrary, Weldon fought the flames from the Camp Fire."There was times we were laying on the ground pouring the water on ourselves so we didn't burn," Weldon, 62, said.Did he ever think he was going to die?"Oh yea, of course, quite a few (times). Quite a few," he told CNN on Tuesday while looking at the damage to his yard and the horrific destruction to his neighbors. The water to the hose lasted four hours. He had more water in the pool. Getting in the pool was a last resort in case the heat and the flames came too close, but they ended up only needing it for the buckets. The house made it. He made it. Everyone is fine."It feels good to have it. I feel so sad for everyone though. Everybody I know lost everything," he said while crying for his neighbors.Five days after the record-setting blaze burned almost every home in town, Weldon, who is retired, is trying to stay positive.Weldon is hopeful his home can serve in the aftermath as an anchor for people to come to while they plan for rebuilding or whatever comes next.Weldon, his mother and McCrary are fortunate. Forty-two people died in the Camp Fire, and more than 6,400 homes are gone.Their house is remarkably unscathed, save for some scorching on the back of the work shed.Officials are still looking into the cause of the fire. They are investigating a report of a transmission line outage about 1 mile northeast of the town of Pulga, about 9 miles from Paradise. While the blaze no longer appears to pose a direct threat to Paradise, Mayor Jody Jones is concerned about marshaling resources for cleanup and recovery so people can return to what's left of their homes."My biggest concern is, do we have the resources to clean up debris and get safety hazards out of the way so people can get to their property ASAP," she said. 2315

BOSTON (AP) — “Full House” star Lori Loughlin will be sentenced to two months in prison after a judge accepted her plea deal with prosecutors for paying 0,000 in bribes to cheat the college admissions process. Her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, was sentenced earlier Friday to five months behind bars for his role in the college admissions bribery scheme. They pleaded guilty in May to paying half a million dollars to get their two daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits even though neither is a rower.Giannulli told the judge he takes full responsibility for his conduct and regrets the harm it is caused his family.Giannulli and Loughlin were among dozens of people arrested last year in the case dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues.” 787

BOSTON (KGTV) - Two parents linked to San Diego in the college admissions scandal, Elisabeth Kimmel and Robert Flaxman, were among the 15 elite suspects who appeared in a Boston courtroom Friday as a federal judge discussed the case. Kimmel, a former media executive, is charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, according to ABC News. Prosecutors did not seek detention and reimposed her prior bond of 0,000. Judge M. Page Kelley ordered Kimmel not to have contact with witnesses aside from relatives, however Kimmel was ordered not to discuss the case with them. RELATED: Actresses Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin charged in alleged college admissions scheme Prosecutors believe Kimmel paid 5,000 to various organizations to gain admission for her children to the University of Southern California and Georgetown University. Kimmel’s daughter was accepted to Georgetown as a tennis recruit in exchange for 5,000 paid through a family foundation, ABC News reported. The young woman graduated in 2017. Kimmel’s son was a track recruit for pole vaulting at USC, which led to a 0,000 payment, prosecutors said. He was admitted to the university in fall 2018. Also in federal court Friday was Los Angeles real estate CEO Robert Flaxman, who is accused of gaining preference for admission to University of San Diego for his son and daughter. The judge reimposed Flaxman’s prior bond and held him the the same conditions of communication as Kimmel. RELATED: CEO behind college admissions cheating scam wanted to help the wealthy According to the indictment, Flaxman took part in both college recruitment and entrance exam schemes. Prosecutors said Rick Singer, who ran a college admissions company, doctored Flaxman’s son’s college essay and application and sent them to a USD varsity coach, later identified by the university as former basketball coach Lamont Smith. The admissions essay referred to the younger Flaxman’s volunteer work as the manager of a fictitious elite youth athletic team, ABC reported. Flaxman was emailed an invoice for 0,000 when his son was admitted, according to ABC News. Flaxman’s daughter, who was accepted to USD but did not attend, had a proctor who was paid ,000 to boost her ACT scores, prosecutors said. The elite families were not asked to enter a plea; a judge informed them of their rights and considered any special requests. Kimmel was due back in court next week for an arraignment.Associated Press contributed to this report. 2791

BOSTON (AP) — The story of Buddy the Elf meeting his biological father has come to life, just in time for the holidays.Doug Henning of Eliot, Maine, wore a costume to look like Will Ferrell in the movie “Elf” while meeting his father face to face for the first time last week at Logan Airport in Boston. He even broke into the same awkward song from the movie. Henning told Boston.com that his biological father “probably thought I was a lunatic.”The dad didn’t get the joke because he hadn’t seen the movie, but that didn’t stop him from giving his son a big hug while other family members laughed and cheered.Henning said the family eventually did sit down and watch the movie together as a family.Henning told Boston.com that he grew up with amazing adoptive parents, but he wanted to know more about his heritage, so he used Ancestry.com. Through the website, he connected with a cousin who helped him connect with his biological dad, who says he didn’t know he had a son. When getting to know each other, the biological father and son realized they both work in TV. Henning is a camera operator, and his dad is a sound mixer. Now, they’re trying to figure out if they’ve ever crossed paths. 1201
