BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- China named and shamed more than 10,000 workshops and selling groups in dust and poisonous material-related industries last year in a bid to fight against occupational diseases, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).The figure was revealed at a national meeting on food safety and sanitation supervision here Monday amid an ongoing campaign on regulating workshops and selling companies in the fields of mining, quartzite processing, gem processing, stone processing, smelting and cement production among others.The campaign, starting in last August, was jointly launched by the State Administration of Work Safety, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and All-China Federation of Labor.Earlier this month, 152 workers at an electrical and lighting company in south China's Guangdong Province were found to have suspected mercury poisoning, showing symptoms such as headaches, hair loss, joint aches and shivers.According to the company, all six production lines of the workshop used liquid mercury, but some workers seldom took the trouble to wear a mask at work.Vice Health Minister Chen Xiaohong said at the meeting that the ministry is currently working with other departments to set up regular meetings at ministerial level on the prevention and control of occupational diseases.The MOH is also aiming to set up a network against occupational diseases at grassroot level while providing basic job-related health services for migrant workers, said Chen.
BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Supervision said Thursday it would enhance supervision to key sectors and leading officials this year to ensure clean and efficient work in promoting the country's sound economic and social development.The supervision and examination would target corruption in project construction, real estate development and land management, as well as corruption behind major accidents, the ministry said in a circular outlining major works in 2010.The ministry would investigate officials who meddled in construction projects against relevant regulations to seek personal gains, staff of supervisory organs who were negligent of duty or took bribes, and those who involved in serious commercial bribery cases, the circular said.The ministry vowed "zero tolerance" for these cases, it said.The ministry promised to step up its efforts this year to ensure the implementation of the central government's major arrangements for accelerating the adjustment of economic growth mode and promoting steady and fast economic development.It would also strengthen supervision and examination to make sure local governments will take measures to check the rocketing real estate price in some cities to ensure the sector's healthy development, it said."Lazy and incapable" officials would also be targeted in the supervision to ensure efficiency of government work, according to the circular.China has intensified its fight against corruption recently.In its latest effort, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Tuesday listed 52 unacceptable practices in an ethics code for CPC cadres to follow.The code forbids conducts including accepting cash or financial instruments as gifts, and using their influence to benefit their spouses or children with regards to their employment, stock trading or business.

HAIKOU, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's southern island province of Hainan saw a surge in travelers on Saturday, one day before the Chinese Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, said local officials.A total of 65,397 people arrived in Hainan, a tourist resort, on Saturday, up 30.16 percent from the eve of the Chinese lunar new year of 2009, according to a spokesman with the local holiday and travel coordination bureau.A survey of 10 scenic spots in Hainan showed they received about 41,750 visitors on Saturday and their total ticket income hit 2.07 million yuan (303,000 U.S.dollars), up 7.32 percent and 12.37 percent respectively from the eve of the last Spring Festival, the spokesman said.Another survey of Hainan's 21 hotels showed they accommodated 6,101 travelers on Saturday, and reported an income of 5.04 million yuan, up 26.21 percent, he said.From Feb. 1 to Feb. 13, more than 3,800 foreign travelers arrived in Hainan for a holiday, according to statistics from the Haikou General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection."I am very happy to spend Spring Festival in such a beautiful island. BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police had cracked 210 online gambling crimes and arrested 918 suspects in the 13 days ending Feb. 20, an official with the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Wednesday.Gu Jian, vice director of the bureau of cyber security under the ministry, said the ministry also cracked another 122 less severe cases and punished 351 people in the same period.He did not provide further details about the cases.Eight Party departments, government ministries and financial regulatory bodies including the MPS and the People's Bank of China, jointly launched a seven-month-long nationwide campaign to curb online gambling on Feb. 8.The campaign, according to an earlier statement from the MPS, targets "major and severe cases, and would arrest domestic and foreign groups that organize online gambling and severely punish the offenders."Online gambling has seriously disturbed social and economic order, and has drawn strong complaints from the public, Gu said.
