SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A border officer admitted in court Wednesday to putting his hands around a person's neck and shaking them at the Calexico Port of Entry two years ago.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer Esaul Bello, 53, pleaded guilty to using unreasonable force on the individual while on duty in the primary vehicle lane booth at the Calexico Port of Entry on Nov. 26, 2018.U.S. Attorney Office officials say during inspection, Bello placed both of his hands around the person's neck, even though they were not resisting. Officials say Bello then shook the person.The person was applying for admission to the U.S., officials said.As part of the plea, Bello agreed to resign from his position.“This is a rare and troubling situation,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “We will always move swiftly to protect the public from officers who use their power to violate another person's Constitutional rights.”Bello will be sentenced on June 2, 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former gang member and other community leaders went door-to-door knocking on homes to create a conversation about gang violence.Bishop Cornelius Bowser is a former Crips gang member. He saw his best friend get killed in a park in Logan Heights when he was 22 years old. That’s why he’s going around from house to house talking to people who live in the gang “hot-spots.” Bowser says, “If you can address the needs of the community and bring resources into the community and help empower them, you can bring crime rates down.”He says starting a conversation creates a bond and people are more willing to talk if they know you. During their walk, they learned that underage kids are drinking at the park after dark and stolen cars are showing up on Marcy Avenue. Now they will take that information to the police.Bowser also goes to a crime scene and the hospital after a shooting to be there for the victim and the family.Bowser and his team were also handing out resources like phone numbers, upcoming community events, and information on locking up guns to protect kids from accidental shootings.Liliana Hernandez is one resident who opened her door for Bishop Bowser. She saw two killings on her street last year and is very grateful for their support. Hernandez says, “I always try to find ways as to what’s going on in the community and sometimes I’m just lost.”Tracy Swafford lost her 17-year-old daughter to a drive-by gang shooting ten years ago. She walks and knocks on doors, too. Swafford says, “It is important because it lets the people know we are here for them.”There is a community meeting Tuesday, April 16th at 6:30 at Logan Heights Library. They will be discussing the AB 392 “use-of-force” bill that will hold law enforcement accountable if they are found criminally negligent in an officer-involved shooting. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A GoFundMe page is set up for the college student who broke both legs trying to rush the field at San Diego Stadium after San Diego State Aztecs defeated Stanford.Matt Nesbitt, 25, was in a hurry to join the celebrating crowd Saturday night and jumped from the bleachers.  "I let go to drop down and immediately thought, 'This is a lot higher than I thought.'"  Nesbitt, who is a Grossmont College student, broke both tibias just above his ankle.The GoFundMe page said Nesbitt spent two nights in the hospital.  He’s expected to spend another 3-4 weeks in a wheelchair. Nesbitt told 10News he has severe lower back pain.The page is requesting ,000 for Nesbitt’s treatment.  By Wednesday, two days after its initial posting, the fund had received 7.Reflecting on his spur-of-the-moment jump...  "Don't know if I'd do it again.  I got really lucky. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego-based owners and operators of the conservative One America News Network filed a million defamation lawsuit Monday against MSNBC and political commentator Rachel Maddow for saying on air the network ``really literally is paid Russian propaganda.'' The lawsuit filed in San Diego federal court by Herring Networks Inc., owners of the One America News Network -- or OAN -- calls Maddow's on-air statements ``utterly and completely false'' because OAN ``is wholly financed by the Herrings, an American family'' and ``has never been paid or received a penny from Russia or the Russian government.'' Maddow and MSNBC could not immediately be reached for comment. Maddow made the statements during a July 22 segment of her show, in which she cited a Daily Beast article stating that an OAN on-air reporter was ``on the payroll for the Kremlin.'' Herring Networks' court papers say the reporter, Kristian Rouz, is originally from the Ukraine and started his journalism career by writing articles for Sputnik News, which is affiliated with the Russian government. According to Herring Networks, Rouz was merely a freelancer for Sputnik who selected his own article topics for submission, and his work there had no significance toward his work for OAN. OAN demanded a retraction of Maddow's statement, according to the suit, which says that an attorney for NBC Universal refuted that Maddow's use of the word ``literally'' was not simply a figure of speech. The Herrings' attorney, Skip Miller, said in a statement that ``One America is wholly owned by the Herring family in San Diego,'' who he called ``as American as apple pie.'' Regarding Maddow's statements, Miller said, ``This is a false and malicious libel, and they're going to answer for it in a court of law.'' SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Carlsbad woman on a popular hiking trail denied the allegations against him during a virtual arraignment Thursday morning.Through his attorney, the teen denied all allegations. He faces charges in connection with the Nov. 23 death of 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg.Thorborg was on a morning walk at Hosp Grove Trail when Carlsbad police investigators said she was attacked and stabbed to death.On Dec. 14, Carlsbad police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy in the case. Little information on the teen was released, but police noted the suspect is a Carlsbad resident.Thorborg's death struck a chord with many in the community. In the days following her death, a large group came to honor her by finishing the walk she started.The woman’s death also left many neighbors upset and concerned about their safety while on that trail.During Thursday’s arraignment, the judge also granted the teen's request to two phone calls -- one to his Mom, the other to his grandmother.ABC 10News learned Thorborg’s family was also listening to the hearing through the phone.Another hearing in the case is set for Dec. 22. 1173
