John Thompson, the first Black man to coach a college basketball team to an NCAA championship and longtime fixture at Georgetown University, has died. He was 78 years old.Thompson's family confirmed the Hall of Famer's death in a statement released by Georgetown University on Monday."We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of our father, John Thmopson, Jr. Our father was an inspiration to many and devoted his life to developing young people not simply on, but most importantly, off the basketball court," the family's statement read. "He is revered as a historic shepherd of the sport, dedicated to the welfare of his community above all us."Thompson, a Washington, D.C. native, played college basketball at Providence College in the 1960s before a brief NBA career with the Boston Celtics, where he won two championships. 846

KILLEEN, Texas (AP) — Skeletal remains found in Killeen, Texas, have been identified as those of a soldier from Oklahoma missing from Fort Hood, Texas. The U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Command in Quantico, Virginia, says in a Sunday that the remains are those of 24-year-old Private Gregory Scott Morales from Sapulpa. Police in Killeen say Morales' remains were found Friday in a field in Killeen after Fort Hood officials received a tip of a body in the field. The Army says foul play is suspected while an autopsy will determine the cause of death. Morales was last seen in August and was to be discharged within days after his disappearance. 659

Journalists are boycotting coverage of films from Walt Disney Studios in order to show solidarity with the L.A. Times, which is being blocked by the company.Entertainment sites like The A.V. Club and Flavorwire, as well as a pop culture writer for the Washington Post, said they would curb their Disney coverage until the ban of the Times was lifted."It's a dangerous precedent that Disney is setting: Write an unfavorable story—one that Disney hasn't disputed factually, even—and it will blacklist your publication, punishing independent journalism by using its massive corporate influence," wrote A.A. Dowd, the A.V. Club's film editor.Last week, the Times explained in an editor's note that Disney's films were not included in its annual Holiday movie preview because of a story the Times published in September that examined the business relationship between the company's Californian theme park -- Disneyland -- and the city of Anaheim.Disney put out a statement Friday saying that while they work with news organizations they "don't always agree with," the Times "showed a complete disregard for basic journalistic standards" in relation to the Disneyland story and that's what led to the ban.The A.V. Club said it was following in the footsteps of the Post's Alyssa Rosenberg, who explained on Monday that even though she's excited to see Disney films like next month's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," she can't "in good conscience attend similar showings or write reviews in advance" as long as Disney is blocking the Times from press screenings. She added that she doesn't speak for the Post, and that until the Times' critics are "treated like everyone else and welcomed back to press screenings," that she'll write about the films after they are released."I like a lot of movies that come out of the Disney corporate behemoth," she wrote. "But I like journalistic independence from corporate influence more. This is a fine price for me to pay for it."On Monday, Flavorwire also joined the boycott saying that they will "withhold the only thing we have of value to that studio: the free advertising provided by not only reviewing their films, but write-ups of their trailers, production announcements, casting rumors, and so on."They added that while they are a tiny platform they hope that if larger outlets are willing to join that "maybe that will move the needle a little."Disney did not immediately respond to request for comment regarding this story. 2509

Kate Hudson closed out her week with a big reveal: She's pregnant. The "Marshall" actress announced on Instagram on Friday that she's expecting a baby girl with musician boyfriend Danny Fujikawa. The entire family, she said, is "crazy excited."But, she said, it hasn't been an easy first trimester.  311

KENOSHA, Wis. – Jacob Blake provided an update from his hospital bed in a video released by his attorney Saturday evening. In the video, the 29-year-old man who was shot seven times by a Kenosha police officer in August said he’s still in a lot pain.#JacobBlake released this powerful video message from his hospital bed today, reminding everyone just how precious life is. #JusticeForJacobBlake pic.twitter.com/87CYlgPDBj— Ben Crump (@AttorneyCrump) September 6, 2020 “I got staples in my back, staples in my damn stomach, you do not want to have to deal with this sh**, man,” said Blake. “24 hours, every 24 hours, it’s pain, it’s nothing but pain. It hurts to breathe. It hurts to sleep. It hurts to move from side to side. It hurts to eat.Blake remains paralyzed from the waist down.“Your legs, something that you need to move around and move forward in life, can be taken from you like this,” said Blake.Still, despite his pain, Blake seemed optimistic about the future.“There’s a lot more life to live out here, man,” he said.At the end of the video, Blake urged his supporters to keep fighting.“Please, I’m telling you, change your lives out there, we can stick together, make some money, make everything easier for our people out here man, cause there’s so much time that has been wasted,” he said.Blake’s attorney, Ben Crump, claims his client was helping to deescalate a domestic incident when police drew their weapons and Tasered him.“As he was walking away to check on his children, police fired their weapons several times into his back at point blank range,” Crump said in a statement last week, in which he announced he would represent Blake. “Blake’s three sons were only a few feet away and witnessed police shoot their father.”Blake’s video comes a day after his attorneys entered a plea of not guilty during a hearing related to several charges filed against Blake, including sexual conduct and disorderly conduct. The Kenosha County District Attorney's Office says those charges were what Blake was wanted for at the time of the police shooting on Aug. 23.The shooting was captured on camera and received national attention. It was followed by several nights of unrest in Kenosha and other cities across the country as demonstrators continue to protest against police brutality. The officer who shot Blake has been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is investigated. 2405
