NEW YORK -- Lori Gaeta gets a cup of coffee every day at a cafe on Lexington Avenue in New York City.Last week, she got a cup coffee and started a conversation with a homeless man that changed both of their lives.Gaeta says she met the homeless man, named William, on 61st Street. It was a conservation she couldn't get out of her mind.“He was paralyzed in a broken down wheelchair. I just felt he could use a blessing,” said Gaeta. All she knew about him is he is 61 years old and his name is William, he became paralyzed and is now homeless. She noticed his wheelchair was being held together with duct tape and was falling apart. She asked him if it was alright for her to get him a new chair.Gaeta sprung into action and started an online quest asking for help posting on a site called Nextdoor. Generous New Yorkers immediately came forward offering used chairs. Then a total stranger, named Elizabeth Menegan, offered to buy William a new chair, spending over 0.“You know that saying it takes a village to raise a child? Well, this took an entire neighborhood to bless this man. He has no idea he had a brand new chair coming to him,” said Gaeta.William says he is grateful for the generosity of so many strangers.“I don’t know her but I give her respect,” said William.Gaeta says this story is more than getting William a wheelchair, she hopes that she can help William find a home. This story was originally published by Monica Morales at WPIX. 1459

NEWTON, Mass. – As eviction moratoriums end across the country, homeowners and renters are facing a crisis. Many are on the verge of homelessness as cities and towns scramble to distribute what little federal emergency funds they have left.Amanda Berman is the Director of Housing and Community Development in Newton, Massachusetts, a wealthy suburb near Boston. But even some of the nation's wealthiest cities are realizing their residents are not immune from economic impact of the pandemic.“This was there all along. We’ve been having a housing crisis forever. This is exposing how deep the cracks are,” Berman said. With help from the CARES Act, Newton was able to secure million in emergency housing funds. To spread the money out as best they could, the city decided to assist people in low-income housing with 70% of their rent. At least 170 families have been helped in the last two months.“You fight and fight to get ahead and something like this throws you back really far,” Berman added.Nationally, 20% of households missed their rent payments last month. Housing experts say that number is likely to skyrocket in September as extra unemployment funding and rental assistance money disappears.“The real estate industry will go through massive changes here in the next few months,” said Jeff Larabee, who has an apartment complex he rents out. He's had some tenants simply move out because they’ve lost their jobs and can’t pay rent, which has left him concerned about making mortgage payments.“I think there’s going to be a lot more homelessness, I don’t know how we're going to make all the mortgage payments,” he added. 1641

NEW YORK (AP) — In a typical year, the newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class would have hit the stage and perform the well-known songs that made them famous and helped them enter the prestigious organization. Not in 2020.Because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year's all-star group was inducted Saturday night in a taped HBO special that told the stories of Whitney Houston, Notorious B.I.G. and the Doobie Brothers' rise to fame and how acts like Nine Inch Nails, T. Rex, and Depeche Mode heavily impacted the music industry and generations after them.According to the Los Angeles Times, Houston's mother/manager Cissy Houston accepted her induction on her behalf.Whitney was 48 when she passed away in 2012 after she accidentally drowned due to heart problems and cocaine use, ABC reported.According to Vulture, Houston, Biggie, and T. Rex founder Marc Bolan were three 2020 inductees honored after their deaths.Notorious B.I.G., who was shot and killed in 1997, was inducted by Sean "Diddy" Combs, Vulture reported.Bolan, who died in 1977, was inducted by the former drummer for the Beatles Ringo Starr, Rolling Stone reported. The induction ceremony was initially supposed to occur in May in Cleveland, the city where the Rock Hall is located. 1267

No one connects with fans better than Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones, so it's no surprise he went above and beyond to help make a fan's wedding proposal one to remember. Before Monday's exhibition game against Norfolk Tides, Daniel Diaz reached out to the center fielder on Instagram asking if he could do a quick video of him saying "Daniel has a question for his girlfriend Kristine." Instead, Jones had a better idea, he suggest instead of a video recording how about they do it in person.Just as promised right on the diamond Jones helped Diaz pull off a surprise proposal to his girlfriend Kristine Dixon, and she said yes!    702

NEW YORK (AP) — A popular online spoof of the children's favorite "Goodnight Moon," reworked for the coronavirus, will be published by Penguin Random House this fall.
